Hands On Asheville-Buncombe

It's More Than Just Pencils & Paper

Back to School Supply Drive
June 21st - July 25th

It's on! Our annual Back to School Supply Drive is in full-swing.  Last year's Supply Drive equipped 738 low-income elementary and middle school students with backpacks FULL of supplies to learn and succeed in school. Help us make a bigger impact this year!

Now's the time to start looking for deals on calculators and backpacks- our most needed items.

Many WNC families are financially stressed, but you can make a difference in their lives. Help us equip youth from low-income families with the basic tools to learn and succeed in school. Donations will be distributed by the following local nonprofits and schools to students identified with needs.

Summer Meals For Kids

Working parents don't usually get the summer off, so they have to make a crazy quilt of arrangements for their children. Summer doesn't include all-day camps or trips out of town for every child. It might be half day programs or being at home alone.

Thankfully, Buncombe County Schools announced that for the third year in a row, free lunches are being offered at 16 different schools, libraries and other community sites scattered around the county. That's fabulous news for thousands of youth and their families! These feeding sites are the best hope for many families to get some good, nutricious food for their children each weekday.

Hands On Managed Projects

Flex Icon Flex Projects are done-in-a-day projects led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader. Most Flex Projects take place on evenings or weekends and last 1-3 hours. Flex Projects don't require an ongoing commitment or any advance training, and many are family friendly!

Portable Project Icon
Portable Projects allow you to volunteer any time or place you want. They're easy to do on your own or with a group. Consider getting your family, friends, faith community, or co-workers together to help with a Portable Project.

Upcoming Partner Projects & Events

Our Partner Agencies offer great ways to get involved each month.  We've highlighted a few below.

How are you celebrating the 4th? Consider volunteering at the Ingles Independence Day Celebration in the heart of downtown at Pack Square Park. Asheville Downtown Association has volunteer shifts throughout the day to oversee inflatable bounce houses, beverage sales, wristband sales, and general floaters who can help out.   Friday, July 4.

Support RiverLink's RiverMusic, a series of FREE live concerts by the French Broad River in the River Arts District of Asheville. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks at each event.
Friday, July 11.

Downtown After 5 is Asheville's biggest party - and United Ways' 2-1-1 is part of the fun this year! The Asheville Downtown Association chose NC 2-1-1 Asheville Center as the charity partner for the July concert. Volunteer's ensure that only people 21 and over receive a wristband, while taking the opportunity to spread the word about NC 2-1-1 and the work we do. Friday, July 18.
