august 12, 2016

off on a mini sabbatical and a drive across the good ole' U.S. of A.

The rest of August will be quite busy packing up and moving two of our kids to two schools, including a daughter settling into her college junior year; and including a drive across the country to Los Angeles for my son and me (I feel a few snippets coming on already). We wish to take our time getting there, and then I'll stay until he is all set up in an apartment. (Prediction: Target and Ikea stock rises).

I'm giving myself permission to take a short reprieve from
SNIPPETS and will see you snippeteers again in September.

Incidentally, if you read in the news about an Italian mother left by the side of the road somewhere around Kansas, that might be me, after I grate enough on my son's nerves. Oh, and could one of you come pick me up?

A quick 'reflection section' about this impending plan: instead of "dreading it" as people keep voicing and passing along to me their negativity and their "UGHs!" about driving such a long distance, I have adopted an attitude of gratitude for having the opportunity to do this.
Why?

1) because I have always wanted to drive across America (ha, cross one off the bucket list). And somehow, I just can't envision Hubby (a.k.a. The Car Nazi) ever agreeing with me to one day rent a Winnebago to do so and stopping to see a sight in every state.

2) because surprisingly, my son actually didn't answer "no" when I asked if he wanted me to accompany him; (how many moms can say that with a straight face about a moody 24-year old???)

and 3) because I choose to look upon this drive as The Next Great Adventures of Suzanne.

Point being ... there may always be nay-sayers and Dorothy Downers on our plans and preferences; just keep driving, do what you wanna do (without hurting anyone) and ignore the negativity.

Life is one great adventure! Go live it large.

As always, snippeteers, thanks for your dedicated snippeting. Please keep us both in prayer for a safe Godspeed journey between Baltimore and L.A.

snippeteer backtalk

"Thanks Suzanne!!! Once again you express so eloquently exactly what my stubborn thick head needed to hear today. I'm afraid I upset a co-worker this week. In my typical forget-the-niceties-get-to-the-point style, I asked that she handle a job that was somewhat new and quite probably one I had neglected to explain clearly enough. While I thought I was clear and to the point, she thought I was more like a raging bull. (Hmmm, quite possibly why a former employer let me know that my nickname 'T' is probably short for 'tactless.') I held the required meeting to explain the work and began with an apology, however, once the hurt is inflicted, it's tough to heal.
Immediately after reading your "just a simple validation," I sent it to her with the message: Here is a 'high five' and a 'thank you' for doing such a great job.
I hope in some small way this makes my co-worker feel better. She really does try hard and does a great job with the extra tasks I ask of her.
A valuable lesson to remember. Thank you!"
