pass the torch

The day after a September pool party at our house for the wonderful nonprofit Cool Kids Campaign (CKC) I was straightening up the pool furniture when I noticed the CKC staff had forgotten to take down the tiki torches along our fence. The evening before, the torches had provided a wonderful touch to the party ambiance as their flames lit up against dusk.

So I removed the 12 torches and stood them up against the house. Then I remembered that we were still holding onto last year's tiki torches in our garage; I kept forgetting to tell the staff we had them

I didn't prefer to store a dozen more messy oily torches, nor keep the ones from last year, so I contacted CKC to ask them to please pick up all of them.

Either set of tiki torches weren't my torches or my responsibility. I wanted to give the torches back.

It is the same with people who try to pass along their drama, anger, passive aggressiveness and other messy emotions and situations ... and what do we do sometimes? We take it. We keep it. We store it. We hold onto it, even though none of it is ours. It is really not our responsibility to take any of that, and hold it inside of ourselves.

And if we end up doing just that, we have to remember not to lite it, ignite it or add fuel to its fire.
