flying by the seat of my biking pants
reflections on life as we pedal along

watching others struggle along

On a recent hike 'n bike trail ride, I noticed a lady shuffling along in the middle of the trail as if she simply could not run another step. She looked so tired; I wished there had been something I could have done to assist her
or pump her with energy.

For her body , I could have offered water. For her psyche, I could have spurred her on to keep jogging. Physically, however, I could not carry her. And certainly, I couldn't have put her on the back of my bike. I couldn't finish running for her - I could just hope for her that she would be able to finish.

We were not near any park benches, picnic tables, trail stations or rest stops - nothing that would provide her a reprieve. She would be forced to finish running, walking, shuffling - or crawling - until she reached her car or house.
It was up to her to ride it out,
see it through and to finish.

If she chose, she could have collapsed right there on the trail and refused to take another step. But who would have picked her up? If she chose, she could have called someone to pick her up at the nearest trail / road intersection - a rescue. And if she chose, she could have just persevered - tired - knowing the end of her run was near.

We see people in peril, yet we cannot always help them in their struggles. We can encourage them, of course. We can listen. We can offer support for their soul or body. We can pray for them. We can hope for them. We can be kind to them. But we can't do it for them.

It is very difficult to watch people we love shuffle along, slow down and get tired. We want to carry them, but we cannot. In the end it is truly up to them to see themselves to the finish. And we hope they do.

"W
elcome back a week late. It was wonderful to get your SNIPPETS as I relaxed at the beach last week. Even more wonderful to see it arrive again this morning, as I sit at home reflecting on life and await the sunrise of a new day. Joys abound! It's the little things in life that really matter; the countless and unlimited moments that cause us to smile each day. Noticing and appreciating them as often as I can is what lights my heart and brings me true happiness. Thanks for the smile. Thanks for SNIPPETS. You are most appreciated."
~ Much love, GERI in MD

"Good job - welcome back!Prayers for all the teachers and students going back to school. May they have a rewarding and educational year! For Sharon in PA struggling with stage 4 cancer. For Bernie in PA, who passed away."

Referring to 9/11/15 snippet - going it alone:

"Amen Sister ... I do it all the time. First by necessity and then because I wanted to. Thanks again for yet another "'right-on' snippet!"
~ PHYLLIS in MD

"Wow, did this hit home. I have had so many people say 'Let's do lunch tomorrow' or 'I'll be over Saturday around 10.' Then nothing, no lunch, no visit, no sorry I didn't show - NOTHING. I have come to the conclusion that the only person who really cares about me is ME! ... when I'm sad, or feeling really down, so why do I wait around for someone to 'lift me up' when only I can do that."
~ KARAN in MD

"I took a huge leap. I quit my job, went to school for real estate and successfully passed the state exam the first time. I have never studied so hard, nor been challenged academically. I am both ecstatic and slightly terrified at the thought of a new career, but feel like it's going to be a great and challenging ride! I didn't realize just how bored I was til I set off on this journey."
