20 for 20 - it always evens out

The script below is a scene in an episode of Seinfeld called "The Opposite" when Elaine tells Jerry he always breaks even:
JERRY: "Yeah, I know; like yesterday I lost a job, and then I got another one. Then I missed a TV show, and later they re-ran it. And then today I missed a train, went outside and caught a bus. It never fails! I always even out!"
ELAINE: Do you have twenty bucks?
JERRY: What for?
ELAINE: Just gimme twenty bucks. (Elaine takes the money and throws it out the window.) Let's see if you get the twenty bucks back!
JERRY: You know you could've thrown a pencil out the window and seen if that came back. (George comes in and Jerry and Elaine follow him to go out. Jerry puts his hand in his coat pocket.) Elaine ... look! A twenty!

Last weekend driving downtown I experienced the 20 out / 20 in scene - twice. There are often "cardboard sign" beggars at city corners. (I think it's God testing me to share what's in my wallet.) Since I am working within myself on "not judging" these beggars - because we don't know in what shoes someone else is walking - I usually share some cash. At one stoplight, there was a guy with his raggedy-written cardboard sign, God blessing people, and declaring he was homeless and broke. Out the window, I handed him a 20. I looked him in the eye, asked if he was okay, and told him to take care of himself as I drove off. He even looked down at the 20 and asked, "Are you sure?" I said yes and drove on with a little high.

About a mile up the road, I stopped at another light and there was another cardboard sign dude. (What I'd really like for them to spend the money on is art supplies! LOL!) I handed him a 20 and asked what was going on with him. He said he was looking for construction work and was hoping to secure something that Monday with a company that he was to meet with. Said he had a 15 year old kid and lived nearby. (People will tell you all kinds of stuff if you just ask! :-D) I wished him well, told him to take care of himself, and drove on.

When I arrived at my destination - a radio interview for my book on Little Italy - a woman in the studio bought a book from me - with a $20 bill. I did the interview and proceeded on with my day; drove back to the county for my next stop - a hair color appointment. I had brought along a conditioning product to return that wasn't working for my curls. We did the transaction and the clerk handed me ... a $20 bill.

Hmmmm, gave away $40 that day; and $40 was returned to me in a few hours. What goes around comes around! It got me thinking about our topic in last week's SNIPPETS about "rolling kindness forward." Seems to always even out, just like Jerry Seinfeld said.

By the way, snippeteers, how did your homework go this week?

SNIPPETS standing ovation
cheers to another super snippeteer!

Kudos to Karen! New author Karen Dubs of Baltimore, Maryland, has published the book, Find Your Flexible Warrior. Karen is a registered yoga teacher, a certified Pilates and Spinning instructor, a personal stretcher and a health coach specializing in flexibility, balance and recovery.

What did Karen learn by this experience in book publishing? "To not get hung up on, and let go of, perfectionism," she said, "which can stifle creativity and create procrastination."

Also pictured is Stella, who didn't help much with the writing, but she sure is a cutie anyway. View Karen's stretch and strength training work on her website: flexiblewarrior.com

reactions to

"This is something I do all the time. I can remember my boys asking when they were younger when I spoke to someone, 'Mom, do you know him/her?' The answer was no, but what does it cost to ask a clerk 'How are you today?' or to tell someone you like their blouse or how pretty their hair looks - not one cent - and their smiles make me feel better as well. I get my nails done and every time someone tells me how pretty they are it lifts my spirits. The world would be a much better place if we were all more positive in our interactions with others."

"I loved this column - as I do all your columns! But I love the idea of paying it forward! We never know the difference we can make in one life. I know that a single person's comment to me can make a huge difference in my day!"

This iceberg image reminded me of what I wrote today in
reflection section, that we cannot assume we know another person's circumstance, what shoes they are walking in, or what is below their surfaces. We see one thing when there is another entire other something going on! Let's recall this visual as we interact daily with all kinds of people in our paths.
