not about the beach bike
i wish i wish i wish
photo of couple in love

"Young Puppy Love" sauntered past on the beach, holding hands, swinging arms, young adults in their '20s. SO in love, so obviously enamored, so adorable. Puppy Love - don't we miss it?

We witness someone else in life in whatever looks nice and pleasing, and we heave a BIG SIGH. We cannot stop looking after them, staring at them, putting ourselves in their flipflops ... and we do the "i-wish-i-wish-i-wish" song and dance. Does this sound familiar?

"Oh, I wish my husband would hold my hand like that."
"Oh, I wish my husband would even walk on the beach with me!"
"How I wish we were that young again." (we're not)
"Oh I wish we had those smooth shapely taut bodies again." (we don't)

Or whatever else we're wishing and thinking as we wish we are in someone else's shoes.

Oh I wish I could stop staring at them is what I was wishing!

Yes, I fell into the "i-wish-i-wish-i-wish" sandtrap and noticed I ceased looking at the beautiful beach scenes: the creative arrangement of a white sand castle someone had crafted, with pieces of red coral sticking up from it and several colorful sand toys decorating it. I wasn't being more careful to stare at the setting sun and view the magnificent sky colors as it swirled some crayon magic. I wasn't watching the seagulls comically curse at each other and chase fellow birds around in circles. No, I was too busy 'wishing' on the Puppy Love Couple.

If we cease staring at what we 'wish' and concentrate instead on our surroundings - what and who is beside us, and where we are - we shall do much better than wishing away thoughts and time.

All Rise. Order in the court!

A morning yoga class at a nearby beach gym is not promoted as 'Hot Yoga' and yet sweat dripped from every crevice under Judgmental Judy's robes. She could actually feel the heat spewing from the ceiling vent - whew downward doggie! Exercise of any type, in The Judge's bold opinion, does not require heat.

So at a point during class when the young-20- something-not-even-close-to-menopause instructor sauntered past to strike her pose on the left side of the room, Judgmental Judy asked politely, "Could you please turn off the heat?" figuring no one else in class was going to "pipe up" even though they were clearly not under 20 and noticeably piping hot, too.

No one asked to turn on the fans, no one asked to turn off the heat, no one asked to open the door to let in fresh air. They silently suffered. They had no voice.

When class was over, The Judge thanked the instructor for a very good class and gently commented that she would happily return IF the heat was off and the fans were on. And don't you know THEN a handful of other women piped up to agree? (WTH? Hello!? Where were they before? Sweat got in their throats? Too out-of-breath sucking in air to find their voices?)

This is not a new scenario - it seems common that Judgmental Judy seems to be the only one in many group exercise classes who asks to turn down the music ... turn on the fans ... and turn off the heat.

Ahem. People! When you feel the need to SPEAK UP for what you want, then SPEAK UP for what you want. It may be something infinitely more important than this example.

The Judge bangs her gavel on not waiting for others to be YOUR VOICE. When you're piping hot over an issue ... PIPE UP!

Case closed.

Suzanne authors new book

A year ago this month I signed a contract with the publisher, The History Press in South Carolina, to publish the title below. Writing from my great passion of being Italian and in honor of my four Italian immigrant grandparents who came to America in the early 1920s, I am pleased and proud to announce the book is being released this month.

Please view more information online here and if you're in the Baltimore area, feel free to attend one of the book signings. All are welcome! The March 6th one at Germano's in Little Italy I've deemed a special 'GIRLFRIEND BOOK CELEBRATION!'

"I love your SNIPPETS. Happy 9th Birthday! That cannot be possible! We were so young when you started."
~ MARY KIM in MD

"Happy birthday SNIPPETS."

"Just what I needed to read! Too easy to look down and miss what is going on around us!"

~ KAREN in MD

"I have been reading a little bit from Thich Nhat Hanh and mindfulness. One quote - 'Life is present in this moment. Every breath brings me back to the present moment to be in touch with life.' Thanks for all your wonderful messages."
~ MOIRA in MD

"Sometimes I feel like you are living with us, because you seem to write on topics that hit close to home. In the last 10 months, hubby has had some serious health issues and I just decided to focus on his well being and run two businesses and forgo all the hoopla of the holidays and all the unnecessary traditions that can sometimes become overwhelming. I set myself free from all of it and actually enjoyed the holidays. I was stress free and felt no guilt for having no tree or decorations. Being a Type A person, liking everything done and perfect, I always felt stressed out trying to get it all done and not fully enjoying the holiday season. This time, I strolled through it, enjoyed its blessings and remained free. Nothing is going to break this gal! Thanks for all your support and for SNIPPETS, it starts my Fridays off on the right foot!"

~ PATTI in NY

"Thank you for bringing to mind one of the best scenes on any TV sitcom. I will now take the time to BREATHE! (I keep SNIPPETS all in a folder on my computer.)"
~ PHYLLIS in MD

"Thanks for the Ally McBeal moment ... still one of my fave shows of all time."
~ MARY LYNN in MD

"I love that you always stay true to yourself! It is an inspiration to me!"

~ MARY in MD

"I love this show ... I know almost all of the stories by heart. In such a weird way, they had a lot of wonderful life moments. I have at times taken my moment, some- times when reading, watching TV, cleaning, working or just having conversations - times you just need to 'get away' for 'a moment.' Sometimes it's because I am choked up, sometimes mad ... those moments let me get myself back together. More of my favorite McBealisms ..."

* The things you regret most in life are the things that you don't do.

* Sometimes if you hold out for everything, you walk away with nothing.

"Another wonderful snippet, My Dear Friend! In my life I have been both ladies, for sure. Fortunately, I have left the first long behind in my youth and tend to be more like the second now. I say 'more like' because I believe some passing things should be treasured forever in our hearts, if not our daily lives: like the memory of loved ones, or lessons learned, even family heirlooms. I don't believe there is anything wrong with holding on to 'snippets' of the past but certainly we must remain unencumbered enough to move ever onward. Yes, it is most important to live 'load free' in the present, with eyes ahead to our future, always aware of God's hand in it all, giving thanks and counting blessings. The key is to find a comfortable middle ground being mindful of others who stroll along the beach before, after, and along with us. I love your imagery, your thought provoking topics ... the things you write about that make us all pause for a time and check our footing or accountability, or simply make us laugh and go 'hmmm." Keep up your Good Works!"
~ GERI in MD

"I was visiting with my husband's Aunt Thea; she is 96. Her sister was 97 when she passed and her husband is 98. Recently she  was asked the question by a deposition lawyer:  'What is the secret to your longevity? Yogurt? Is it walking, or just good Greek genes?' Her answer, in a Greek accent was, 'Walking, smiling, being happy, and eat the right foods. And don't have hate in your heart. Don't have hate towards anyone.'
Just wanted to share such profound wisdom from a 96-year-old who lives a wonderful life everyday!"
~ GEORGI in GA
