bigger? better? bah-humbug!

On that recent trip to Nicaragua which I mentioned in the last issue of SNIPPETS, Hubs and I were settled into a lovely private villa facing a gorgeous Pacific ocean view. And. I. Mean. Beautiful. Cushy accommodations, small private swimming pool, fantastic outdoor furniture, a down comforter ... a villa right out of a travel brochure with a wrap-around deck and sliding glass doors all around. Truly heaven on earth. It was really pretty.

After our first night there, we were told by the golf tournament organizers that they wanted to move everyone into a BIGGER and BETTER villa for the next two nights. And we were like ... "Uh, why???" I tried to make our case by saying it was not necessary, that we were happy where we were, and didn't need 'better and bigger.' We were already offered beautiful - and truly, that was enough. It was a free villa and free vacation, for Pete's sake! No need to take advantage of the resort owner's kindness.

In spite of our protests, the resort staff ended up moving our entire group to the bigger villas the next day. It just felt so greedy. (One of the staff members even accompanied me to our villa while Hubs was playing in the golf tournament to pack up all of my husband's belongings!)

Since the trip, I keep returning to this "materialistic mode" concept. It seems to be a common thread in our American society, that's a certainty. Greedy humans always wanting bigger, better, shinier, newer, and certainly, with a great sale price! Next ... more ... GIMME MORE!

Is it ever enough right here, right now, with what we have? People even physically HURT each other  to grab items in retail stores. WHAT IS THAT? (Do I have to get Judgmental Judy on this case?)

Yes, on some days, we can all be materialistic. (I fell into the "New And Shinier!" trap this week in New York City while shopping.) Yet I also think most of us know what remains REAL about life. And it isn't a cushy villa on the beach in Nicaragua with a fantastic mini bar and complimentary white terrycloth robes. True happiness won't come along with that new black coat in the window at St. Gil in The Big Apple. (Although I bought it anyway - and it's fantastic. LOL!) ;-D

Have you ever found yourself in "gimme-gimme" mode? Being distracted like a little kid with A.D.D. by the shiny things in life? Why or why not? What materialistic thing is around the corner that you THINK will make you happy? Is it possible to instead focus on what's in front of you?

Bigger? Better? Bah-humbug!

Here's one of the best (and truest) quotes I came across this year in my infinite quest for good quotes:

if you cannot be happy
with what you already have
what makes you think
you'll be happy with MORE?
