What you wear to an interview will be as important as your resume and interviewing skills
Congratulations; you have graduated! Now it's time to interview. You don't have much money so making wise clothing purchases is important. Think of your working wardrobe as a part of your career investment; it will be an important component in your future success.
Buy a Good Suit
Nothing says professional, polished, competent, and educated better than a high-quality, well-fitting suit. Think of this suit as not only your "interview uniform" but the base on which to develop your career wardrobe.
Choosing a suit:
Quality over quantity - If your budget is limited, one quality suit will be a much better investment than a few cheap suits that won't wear well.
Have it tailored - Proper fit is important to look professional and feel comfortable.
Sleeve length, jacket length, skirt or slacks hem, fit throughout the shoulders, back, and buttocks are all important.
Classic styles - Trendy styles will look dated sooner and get noticed more. Classic styles will last longer and nobody will notice you are wearing the same suit.
Solid fabric - Fabrics with no print, weave, or stripes are more versatile and will give you more options because they are easier to accessorize, coordinate, and create new looks. Solids are also a better choice financially because they will decrease your cost per use.
Neutral colors - Navy, gray or black are easy colors to accessorize and won't be so noticeable if you must wear the same suit many times.
Add the Details
Use jewelry, scarves, ties, shirts, socks, shoes, and bags to add color, style, and make it unique to your personality; but don't overdo it.
Black shoes, belt, and briefcase or handbag will easily complete your polished, professional look. Leather is the best choice because it will last and is easily maintained.
Learn what colors and styles look best on you. Keep it simple. Pick two neutral colors and two accent colors to start. Stick to one style that will make it easy to coordinate and create more outfits.
Have Everything Ready to Go
Be prepared when the call comes for the interview. Put your "interview uniform" together head to toe including shirts, ties, accessories, undergarments, and shoes. Make sure everything is altered, clean, pressed and ready to go.
Good luck!
