VHA Inc., a national health care network, has given Floyd Valley Hospital a 2013 VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence, honoring the hospital for achieving national performance standards for clinical quality, safety and patient experience. Floyd Valley Hospital was one of 40 VHA member hospitals this year to receive a Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence. Winners were announced May 1 during VHA's national meeting, the2013 Navigating to Excellence Forum, held in Las Vegas. Accepting the award on behalf of the hospital was Lynette Shuff, FVH Purchasing Manager from (l) Byron Jobe, Executive Vice President of VHA Service & Delivery and (r) Curt Nonomaque, VHA President and CEO. "The leaders and staff in these organizations have shown their dedication to providing not only consistently high levels of clinical care but also continually improving that performance to produce better outcomes for their patients," said Steve Miff, PhD, VHA's senior vice president for Clinical and Care Delivery Solutions. "Since the passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, the health care industry has moved quickly to establish and meet performance quality metrics and align care protocol. We are especially proud of these VHA organizations for exceptional performance against national key indicators."

Breast cancer has touched all of us, whether a family member, a friend or even maybe yourself. In the fight against cancer, you need to be diligent in your screening efforts. The American Cancer Society recommends all women over the age of 40 should receive an annual mammogram, earlier if you have a family history. But for some, this exam is not being performed due to lack of financial resources.
Thanks to the foresight of a local group wanting to keep their donation local and make sure all Plymouth County women had access to this important screening, the Floyd Valley Hospital Foundation Breast Cancer Detection Fund was created. Beginning with the TaTa Fun Ride last summer in Remsen and continuing through a number of student-led Pink Outs, funds grew in this new account. Now the Floyd Valley Hospital Foundation is able to offer financial assistance to help area residents receive diagnostic digital mammography screening as a part of their annual health exam.
Applications for financial assistance are available in the business office and in the radiology office to all patients requesting assistance. The application needs to be completed in its entirety and returned to business office prior to consideration. For those wanting to know about donations to this fund, please contact Chuck Jespersen, Foundation Manager.

Thanks to the artistic talents of Mrs. Beth Schlichte's 7th grade art class at Gehlen Catholic School, 35 works of art are hanging around Le Mars promoting the 16th Annual Helping Children's Benefit Golf Tournament. Although the handmade posters were all quite good, the golf committee was charged with selecting their three favorite entries. The FVH Foundation is proud to announce that 1st place was won by Brooke Woederhoff (displayed above), 2nd place was Xavier Roberts and receiving 3rd place was Malayna Hanks. What a great way for local kids help promote an event that directly helps pediatric patients at our local hospital! This year's proceeds will go towards the purchase of a fetal heart monitor for the OB Department. For those wishing to golf, the tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, June 11 and tee times can be made by calling Willow Creek Golf Course at 546-6849. The golfers are treated to a fun, four-person scramble on a beautiful course with many amenities such as great lunch, door prizes, hole prizes and flight prizes. Thanks to Gehlen, the area businesses and the golfers for your continued support of this tournament!
