It's nearly the end of October once again and we are getting ready to celebrate Halloween.
And while we are hoping that this newsflash will be a treat for you, we also have a trick up our sleeve - a trick question that is!
Can you guess why Halloween is the perfect time to point out the complexities of translation?
Because Halloween humor - replete with word play and creative punning - provides the best example ever of how culturally distinct traditions make it very hard to render certain concepts into another language!

In cosmetics, the same can be said of certain product names, which simply sound better in their original language.
For example:
Sublimage Le Fluide by Chanel,
L'Or de Vie Le Sérum by Dior, Le Soin Noir by Givenchy, Eau Dynamisante Treatment Fragrance by Clarins, Eclat d'Opale by Opale Laboratoires Monaco, etc.
Left in French, all these names sound sophisticated and chic while an attempt at a translation would only take away their magical appeal.
