Technologies of the Maker Movement: A Trendspotting Lab
3/26 @ Fairfield University

Tech sandbox at Trendspotting Lab

After two sessions of this program (the first in New Britain in February), we've launched 40 library staff on their way toward "making" in their libraries and schools! Here at Fairfield University, speakers Edward Iglesias and Arianna Schlegel taught attendees to use Arduinos (check out their groovy mood lights!). The afternoon brought concrete plans to bring maker technologies into Connecticut libraries and schools. Thanks to our awesome speakers and brave, creative attendees!

Simply Super Marketing:
Public Library of New London's Museum Pass Board

Public Library of New London Museum Pass Board

Leah discovered this Great Thing on a recent visit to the Public Library of New London. It's a nifty tech-free promotional tool for your museum passes - and can easily be used for other purposes as well. This board has a prominent spot at the circ desk just inside the entrance. It works on two levels: patrons seeking museum passes know instantly what's available; those unaware of this service can't help but discover it. It's effective, efficient, creative, and inexpensive - poster board, laminate, velcro, done! Imagine using this for ebook readers or for any unusual items that you circulate (bikes? cake pans?). If you're fortunate enough to have a digital display, you could easily adapt this into a continuously updated screen in your rotation. There are oodles of possibilities!

Now that's a GREAT THING.

Do you have a "Great Thing" to share with us? We'd love to hear from you! "Great Things" should be relatively inexpensive and easily replicable. Send your idea to [email protected], subject line Great Thing.

From the Executive Director

April hath put a spirit of [libraries] in everything.

Declaration badge Big, big apologies to Shakespeare, but April is OUR MONTH. National Library Week. School Library Month. Even National Poetry Month. CLC has a lot to offer this April, as you'll see as you scroll down. But here are a couple of biggies.

On April 16, CLA, with support from CLC and the Connecticut State Library, will host a Connecticut Libraries Change Lives multimedia and poster session showcase at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford in support of the ALA Declaration for the Right to Libraries initiative. The purpose is to promote awareness of the tangible ways that libraries are impacting lives right here in Connecticut. This is the perfect opportunity for public, academic, school, and special libraries to advocate for our value.

Let's see each and every one of you at this session. And not just you, but your Friends, your boards, your administrators, your faculty, your patrons, your local legislators, and your local media folks! Encourage everyone to make visiting this event part of their National Library Week activities. For more info, visit ctlibrarians.org or ctlibraryassociation.org

(If you haven't read and signed the Declaration yet, it takes just a moment. Visit www.ilovelibraries.org/declaration/sign. There's a special "Declaration for the Right to School Libraries" too.)

On April 28-29, come visit us in the vendor hall at the Connecticut Library Association Conference at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell. We'd love to see your smiling faces, chat with you, tell you how much you've saved with CLC, and hand you some goodies! What goodies? Well ... you'll have to stop by to find out!

As always, we look forward to hearing from you. Have a spirited month.
