One Little Jar = One Big Change
At Cragin Memorial Library,
"What you pay is up to you"
Cragin Library overdue jar
The jar you see above is available at both of Cragin Memorial Library's circulation desks, affixed with heavy-duty Velcro tape. According to director Kate Byroade, "When patrons have overdue fines, we let them know that whatever they pay will clear the fine." Surprisingly, fine revenue has increased since the library instituted the jar. "Many people actually overpay, sticking in a dollar for an eighty-cent fine, for example, and refusing the change," says Byroade. Most importantly, "It defuses just about any patron who is upset about fines, as s/he can simply pay a penny or a dollar and the fines are cleared." The jar only applies to overdue fines, not to fees for lost/damaged materials or any other charges. The library does not advertise the jar nor list it in any official policies, enabling them to discontinue the program at any time.

Ask yourself, your patrons & your staff ... What impact would it make on your time, energy and patron interactions if you tried this?

Change ... For the Better?

As a new director and "Change Junkie," this is a question I ask myself and my colleagues frequently. When is change destructive instead of constructive? How can we effectively evaluate organization-changing ideas when our perceptions are so clouded by our own tolerance of change in general? What do you think?

CLC has changed, expanded and tweaked some of our programs and services this month:

  • This month's One Great Thing is about change - literally. It created a lively discussion at CLC, and we are curious to read your responses.
  • New roundtables:
Urban Libraries Roundtable (4/11) - open to staff at all levels
New Directors Roundtable (3/18) - this is for you if you've been a director for 3 years or less.
  • Discounts have been added, extended or expanded for Alexander Street Press, Tumblebooks, the Computers in Libraries conference and more!
  • With the addition of the ZappBug and PackTite discounts, CLC has a new product category: "Bedbug Control Devices."
  • Around the Libraries - lots of goodbyes and hellos in this column. Help us share the news. If you know someone from our library community who has arrived, moved on or retired, please let us know.
  • Save the Date! CLC's 10th Anniversary Party & Annual Meeting will be held May 16th. We are planning a fun and community-building gathering. Details to come soon!

Change: Love it or hate it, librarians are hard-pressed to avoid it. After all, our institutions are the go-to destination for those who seek answers to life changes.

Jennifer
