WHEN IS IT TIME TO SEE A COUNSELOR?
I am frequently asked by parents if I think a child needs counseling. In some ways, the fact that I am being consulted is a good indication of the answer. In many cases the parents have not been able to effect the change with the skills they have, the situation has become worse, or it is significantly impacting their child's life. Any one of these is good cause to speak with a professional who can provide insight, additional skills or enhance techniques. Whether or not this scenario is something you are familiar with, a good guideline to use when considering if a situation warrants additional help is measuring the degree to which it is impacting your or your child's life. - How much time are you spending daily dealing with the situation?
- How much does it effect you, your family, or your child?
- Has the same situation been going on for a long time, is it getting worse, or has it kept coming back every time you think it has gone for good?
It is important to know that a mental health problem does not automatically equate to mental illness. Most of the time the problem is the result of what I call mental indigestion: when an experience, thought, event, etc... is greater than what an individual is prepared for, making it hard to digest and work through. By talking with a counselor, a person can gain insight into the situation, work through thoughts and feelings, and increase their ability to cope and manage the situation.
As always, my door is open to all of CGE's family.... Mark J Scholl, MED, EDS, NCC schollm@martin.k12.fl.us
