Dichos y Dichos
Welcome
Greetings!

My main interest at this time in my life is to identify and translate dichos so that others might enjoy not only the humor, but also the wisdom of our culture.  There are many quotes that I use in trying to make a point that will hopefully motivate others to do that little bit of extra effort to improve their lives.  A very popular one that I use from time to time is "Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude!"  How high you fly in life and how high you set your own personal standards will certainly determine what you will achieve in life.  You can aim high or you can aim low, but remember that your success in life will depend on which one you choose.  Remember that "if you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time!"  Too often, many become satisfied with the status quo and give little thought as to what they could have accomplished if they just tried a little bit harder.  They begin their day with a negative attitude that will most certainly bring negative results for the day and yet they wonder "what went wrong with the day?" If we want to lose weight, we need to make a commitment to do so and quit making excuses of as to why you had that one cookie or ice cream bar.  There is a saying that "no pain means no gain," so you must learn to suffer the withdrawal pain of not having that sweet if you truly are sincere about losing that weight - instead, eat vegetables, as they have very few calories instead of fried food or other dishes that are guaranteed to put on those extra pounds!  There is an answer...if you just accept it! Make a phone call and find out how to get enrolled in a class that can help you with your life!  Read a book that will broaden your knowledge - in other words: do something about it!  In the past, I've discussed with you the traits or habits you need to embrace in order to take the first step toward your being successful, but if all they are is some interesting reading, then you have yet to embrace the idea of success.  When will that moment occur?  Only you have the answer.

Weekly "Dicho con Café"

"El que solo se engańa, que no se queje."

The author's translation is:
"Whoever deceives himself should not complain."

What this means is that you have no one to blame except yourself if you deceive yourself by making excuses on why you did this or didn't do that.  No one is to blame for your action or lack of action except you!  Therefore, when making excuses blame the one you see in the mirror because it is no one else's fault except yours!

More About John A. Flores

One of the most interesting visits made by Mr. Flores when he was teaching abroad was to a couple of concentration camps in Poland, the most notable being Auschwitz!  He visited the Dachau camp, but all that remained of that camp were the foundations of the buildings that used to sit there.  However, at Auschwitz, the buildings, basements, crematoriums and execution walls were all preserved, as a reminder of the evil that was carried out within its barbed wire fences.  It was an overwhelming experience to visit the cellar where the Nazi's first carried out their gas experiments and view the numerous crematoriums where hundreds of thousands of bodies were cremated over time as the Nazi war machine tried to rid the world of Jews.  He visited the barracks where inmates were kept, as well as some of the places where they were tortured and executed. As he toured the site, the one satisfying note of the visit was when he was informed that the concentration camp commander was executed at the same wall as where he sent so many innocent men and women to their fate.  Mr. Flores bought a book with many pictures of the camp and its inmates some showing mothers with their children walking toward the crematoriums not realizing that in a few minutes, they would all be gassed and cremated.  It was a very somber experience for Mr. Flores to walk the same grounds and visit the horrible places where so much suffering occurred.  It is truly unfortunate to know that inhumane torture and suffering continues to exist in many parts of the world, and despite all that happened during World War II, man has yet to learn to live in peace.
