Dichos y Dichos
Welcome
Greetings!

In continuing with my review of the scrolls and the laws found in the book, "The Greatest Salesman in the World" by Og Mandino, his second scroll begins with, "I will greet each day with love in my heart."  He states so eloquently that "muscle can split a shield and even destroy life, but only the unseen power of love can open the hearts of men."  He goes on to say, most of all, that you need to love yourself!  Don't allow your mind to be attracted to evil and despair, to plunge once again into the bad habits that I discussed previously.  Don't allow yourself to become complacent and satisfied, but continue to improve on yourself physically and spiritually so that you can undertake the task of becoming successful by putting to practice the different disciplines I've discussed with you over the past weeks and months.  Don't let hate take up any of your time since it is time wasted and, instead, allow yourself to move forward with a smile for all that you meet and love toward mankind.

"En cama angosta, metete en medio."

The author's translation is that
"In a small bed, get in the middle."

In other words, make the most of a bad situation.  When things are such that you're struggling with being short on cash, yet would like to go out with someone for a meal, don't go out to dinner; instead go out to lunch which will cost you a lot less; or even breakfast, which can cheaper than lunch!  Another example would be to create something new in the middle of a bad situation, as the man who invented the Caesar's Salad did.  He owned a restaurant in Baja California, Mexico, and had many important personalities that patronized his restaurant.  However, one particular night, his restaurant ran out of food and, not knowing what else to do, he simply took what he had left over in the kitchen, which consisted mainly of lettuce, and with that lettuce and ingredients that were still available, he created a salad - the first Caesar's Salad - which was enjoyed by everyone; thus, the Caesar's Salad was invented! It should be noted that the owner's name was Caesar, and the name for the salad came from the owner and not the Roman emperor.  He illustrates a great example of making the most of a bad situation!  Over the years many parents have done the same thing by putting together a meal from leftovers when there is nothing else to eat in the kitchen.  Once again, another great example of making the most from what could be a bad situation!

More About John A. Flores

In an earlier newsletter, it was mentioned that Mr. Flores was a professor on entrepreneurship at California State University, Fresno, and taught the very first entrepreneurship class at the CSUF School of Business.  In addition, he was also instrumental in helping to write a proposal for a foundation that promoted the writing of business plans by high school students, for any business venture they felt could be successful if they had the money to start the business.  The local high schools in the area would be invited to submit the plans through their business department, and the business plans would compete with other students' plans from other high schools.  This project started over fifteen years ago and is still going strong, and has expanded to many of the high schools in California's Central Valley, with cash awards offered to the winning students.  As a result of his skills in this area, Mr. Flores was invited to present classes on entrepreneurship in Poland and Belarussia, where he spent several weeks with a couple of other professors from CSUF, working with faculty and students on the necessary steps required in starting a business along with the different business areas that they would need to address in order to help increase the chances of success on their business venture.  While visiting Poland, he had the chance to tour a couple of the infamous Nazi concentration camps that were built and operated during the Second World War.  In another newsletter, he'll discuss what he saw and felt when he visited those concentration camps that were the final destination for too many human beings during the war.

When he's not writing books, Mr. Flores makes presentations to local, regional and national groups, using dichos to motivate his audiences. You can contact him for speaking engagements at (559) 456-0128 or at his personal email at [email protected]
I hope that in the coming weeks and months you continue to enjoy this very rich part of our culture which not only has humor, but also provides sound advice as it has to many generation before you.
