OBL NOON MEETING

Today we had quite a few guests.  See pics below.

Changing the Way We View Aging
 2/20/2013

Falls in the Elderly Can Be Prevented

According to recent statistic 1 in 3 individuals over the age of 65 will fall at least once in a year. The older the individual gets the higher the risk. Sixty-two percent of individuals age 70 years and older have had a history of falls. Thirty percent of people who fall suffer from a moderate to severe injury due to the fall.

It is recommended that an individual who is over the age of 70 address the potential risk for a fall and take a proactive approach by receiving a pre-screening to identify the severity of risks for falls. Some of the intrinsic risk factor for falls is:

  • · Balance or gait impairment common with vestibular dysfunction
  •  Nerve problems such as peripheral neuropathy
  • General muscle weakness, medication interactions
  •  Dizzy spells or vertigo
  •  Dementia
  •  Psychotropic drugs

Some extrinsic risk factors:

  • Poor footwear
  • Rooms are cluttered with small area to maneuver
  • Improper ambulatory aids.
Fall risk reduction is not a new concept and there a many valuable tools and resources available to the medical professionals in our community. Assessments such as the algorithm, TUG, Tinetti Balance Assessments and the BERG are all available online. It would benefit all the seniors over the age of 70, living in our community to have one of these assessments in order to identify the potential risk.

In addition to the assessment, the senior should be engaged in understanding why they are at risk for a fall and what the risk factors are. Seniors who are at risk should exercise regularly and practice weight bearing exercise with a record of their participation kept in a fall prevention book. Their doctor and the pharmacy should review their medications for possible side effects that could cause a fall. Is the senior on an adequate supply of Vit D and Calcium? The senior should have their eyes checked and maybe only single vision glasses when walking, an additional pair for reading as bifocals can create an issue.

The senior can request an order from their primary physician to have an evaluation done by a licensed physical therapist or occupational therapist to identify potential areas of weakness. There are also great resources such as durable medical equipment companies that can fit the senior with adaptive equipment like walkers, canes or check their oxygen levels to see if it is low and causing mobility issues.

Fall risk prevention is about biology, environment and assessment; it is a chronic disease that needs to be managed.

Camelot Chateau, which is located at 1831 SE Lake Weir Ave. in Ocala FL, is having a fall risk prevention seminar next month on March 26th at 2pm. We will have Gail Scroggie, PharmD, CPh., from IMS pharmacy who will be conducting a FREE review medication lists for potential risks for falling, Jason Kelsey, DPT,MTC from TLC Rehab, Inc. who will be conducting FREE fall risk assessments and Lisa Molton from NOC home health care with her staff who will also be conducting FREE screenings for medical conditions that could cause risk and plans of action to avoid the risks. This event will have lots of take-away information that is valuable and a necessity for any individual who could be at risk or the professionals who serve the senior population. Please RSVP to the event so you can be assured we will have the appropriate amount of staff and materials available.

If you find you are unable to attend this event feel free to contact my office at 352-629-6077 to receive a copy of a FREE screening tool and information.

Trying To Escalate Too Quickly Is One Of The Biggest Networking Mistakes

It might be surprising that I know Adam Rifkin. What's not surprising is that Adam Rifkin knows me - because Adam knows

everybody.

In 2011 Fortune Magazine declared him the best networker in Silicon Valley.

Adam is also one of the nicest, most sincere people I've ever met. He's currently CEO of his latest startup, Pandawhale.

I talked to Adam about his thoughts on networking and how to get better at it.

For brevity's sake I'm only going to post highlights here. If you want the extended interview (which includes Adam's must-reads on networking), I'll be sending it out with my weekly newsletter on Sunday. Join here .

Eric:

Sometimes networking gets a bad rap. How can you network and not feel/come off as salesy?

Adam:

It is better to give than to receive. Look for opportunities to do something for the other person, such as sharing knowledge or offering an introduction to someone that person might not know but would be interested in knowing. Do not be transactional about networking. Do not offer something because you want something in return. Instead, show a genuine interest in something you and the other person have in common.

In general, ask more questions than you make statements. Doing so is particularly useful when meeting someone for the first time. Bill Nye says everyone you meet knows something you don't. Networking is a great opportunity to learn from others!

Eric:

What do most people do wrong when it comes to networking?

Adam:

Most people try to escalate a relationship too quickly. Trust is built slowly, over time.

Good relationships are built little by little, and there are no shortcuts, so do not try to push the relationship to progress faster than is natural.

Because relationships are progressions, follow-ups are important. It's okay to follow up by email, but keep in mind that the other person's inbox is probably swamped, so s/he may not respond even if s/he reads the email. It's okay to email again even if you have not heard back. Over time, every interaction contributes to a deeper relationship, even when there isn't always a response.

Eric:

How do you manage such a large network and not lose touch?

Adam:

You're not going to be able to check in with everyone all the time. So prioritize the people you'd most like to be influenced by, and look for special opportunities to reconnect with them regularly - not just birthdays and anniversaries but whenever you learn a piece of information, find a job listing, or make a connection that could be relevant to them.

Writing to offer a piece of information or a connection is a great way to demonstrate that you're looking out for the other person.

Humans have a tendency to want to reciprocate, so the more you show you're looking out for someone, the more likely that person will begin to keep you in mind as well.

Eric:

Any tips for people who are introverted or shy?

Adam:

I am naturally introverted and shy, so I can relate! The key is to think of networking as a skill that anyone can learn; it just requires practice:

1. Do something every single day. Make it a habit. The more of it you do, the better you can get at it. Every day is an opportunity to get better, but do not try to do too much at once. Take the longview, and connect with at least one person professionally every day. Could be following up with someone you already know; could be asking for an introduction from a mutual connection.

2. Once in a while, think of two people who should know each other but don't, and introduce them. Follow through with them later to learn from whether that introduction was worthwhile, so you can get better at making introductions. Practice!

3. Imagine you got laid off today. Who are the 5-10 people you'd write to for advice? Make sure to invest in those relationships regularly, not just when you have an urgent need.

4. Look at the 5-10 people you've spent the most time with in the last 3 months. Are you happy with the way they're influencing you? If so, find another person who belongs in that group and invest in that relationship. (If not, change the way you're spending your time! How you spend your time determines so much in your life.)

Eric:

What's a good tip people can start using immediately?

Adam:

Every day, do something selfless for someone else that takes under five minutes. The essence of this thing you do should be that it makes a big difference to the person receiving the gift. Usually these favors take the form of an introduction, reference, feedback, or broadcast on social media.

But yeah, do something that's not for yourself, every single day. Expect nothing in return. Over time, these random acts of kindness will really add up.

What are the three best methods for networking?

Networking is vital to staying employed, salary growth and job satisfaction. Employees with larger networksperform better. Networking has even been shown to be vital for drug dealers.

You're likely to find out about your next job through people you know but aren't very close to so expanding the pool of "weak ties" increases opportunities.

1) Reconnecting with old friends on Facebook and Linked In is  a good first step.

2) Linked In founder Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha's new book "The Start-up of You: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career" (which I'm featured in) offers solid tips on expanding your network the right way:

Reid's rules

In the next day: Look at your calendar for the past six months and identify the five people you spend the most time with - are you happy with their influence on you?

In the next week: Introduce two people who do not know each other but ought to. Then think about a challenge you face and ask for an introduction to a connection in your network who could help.

Imagine you got laid off from your job today. Who are the 10 people you'd e-mail for advice? Don't wait - invest in those relationships now.

In the next month: Identify a weaker tie with whom you'd like to build an alliance. Help him by giving him a small gift - forward an article or job posting.

Create an "interesting people fund" to which you automatically funnel a certain percentage of your paycheck. Use it to pay for coffees and the occasional plane ticket to meet new people and shore up existing relationships.

3) Harvard Business Review has another great technique:

After you identify your key contacts, think about how you first met them. In the center column of the work sheet, write the name of the person who introduced you to your contact (if you met the person yourself, write "me"). This column will reveal the brokers in your network and help you see the networking practices you used to connect with them.

These are the people you already know who are clearly able and willing to help you branch out. They should be the first people you call and where you invest a disproportionate amount of your time and energy.

THOUGHTS for the DAY

The world of business can seem like a tough place. If you are struggling with work and the day to day grind, then consider this: you are not alone. It may seem that others are coping better than you, doing better than you, making better decisions than you, but know this: many people put on a front and go through life putting on a front. Be who you are whilst they try to be who they want to be.
