ON CAPITOL HILL

On April 18-19, recreational fishing community representatives met as part of a multi-phase process to identify strategies for addressing current and future Gulf of Mexico red snapper management challenges. Facilitated by Florida State University's  FCRC Consensus Center, the third meeting of the Gulf Angler Focus Group Initiative produced constructive discussion on the current condition of Gulf red snapper management and potential options for improving recreational fishing opportunities while ensuring fishery sustainability... 


IN THE STATES

On April 25 - 26, the Kansas Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus hosted the 10th Annual Larry Magill Sportsmen's Challenge. The first day consisted of a multi-species fishing tournament on Milford Lake, and the second day included a sporting clays shoot... 

On April 21, the New Hampshire House Fish and Game and Marine Resources Committee voted 11-5 to concur with a minor amendment made by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee to HB 500 - a bill to authorize the use of firearm suppressors for hunting... 

On May 2, Governor Chris Christie issued a conditional veto on New Jersey Senate Bill 977 and Senate Bill 978. The bills initially would have prohibited the import, export, sale, possession, and transport of "Big 5" African species and their parts (including taxidermy). Gov. Christie's conditional veto will allow for the transport, import and export of "Big 5" species in New Jersey that are not remaining in the state, but will prohibit the possession of trophies staying in New Jersey... 

CSF NEWS

The Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation (CSF) and National Deer Alliance (NDA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on April 28 that will enhance advocacy efforts for hunting across the country...

On May 13 - 15, the annual Central Florida Shootout will take place in Melbourne, Florida. Presented by Costa and Boaters Exchange, this event features a weekend fishing competition including 10 different species categories, a general entry category, and entry categories for Lady Anglers and Juniors. There is also an opportunity to enter a $50 raffle for a NauticStar 214XTS bay boat, of which a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation... 

The Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation is seeking a Midwestern States Coordinator to co-manage the state sportsmen's caucus effort organized under the National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses (NASC) and the Governors Sportsmen's Caucus (GSC) programs for the Great Lakes states (IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, WI) within CSF's Midwestern Region...
