Celebrating a Legacy:
Plymouth Turns 400!

The Mayflower II, built in Devon, England, is once again in Plymouth. The re-created ship gives patrons a true sense of what the original 17th century vessel was like.

One might be hard pressed to meet
a resident of Plymouth that has not heard of the upcoming 400 year anniversary celebration. Five years of festivities are planned culminating in 2020. The town will be energized with visitors and locals alike, as we celebrate the Mayflower voyage and the founding of Plymouth Colony.

"We see it as our duty as a community to help commemorate this incredibly significant piece of history!" enthused Shelia Fey, Project Coordinator for Plymouth 400 Inc. Plymouth 400 Inc. is a not-for-profit organization formed to lead the planning and execution of activities commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Voyage as well as the founding of Plymouth Colony. "This is an anniversary of national and international significance. We want to engage the community now, so that in 2020 they'll be fully involved in all of our events and programs!"

This celebration of Plymouth's national legacy brings together industry, commerce, and the arts not only in Massachusetts, but on a global
scale. Plymouth will be the world stage for the national and international celebration of the Mayflower voyage 400 years ago.

History
In September of 1620 the Mayflower departed from Plymouth, England headed for the "New World." Interestingly, the ship was destined for Virginia, but due to weather and navigational error, landed in Massachusetts. After months at sea, the Mayflower landed on Cape Cod
in November of 1620. The ship held church goers in search of religious freedom and entrepreneurs determined to realize economic success in a new profitable colony.

Many of the new colonists did not survive that first year in New England. But health and economic conditions did improve.

Progress steadily grew upon signing treaties with local Indian tribes. The initial sailing of the Mayflower and subsequent settlement is viewed by many as the beginning of a national legacy.

Ongoing Events
A campaign is currently underway in hopes that the US Postal Service
will issue stamps commemorating the 400th Anniversary. To support this endeavor you can visit www.plymouth400inc.org and click the Events and Programs tab.

The Plymouth International Chorus is comprised of students from MA
public schools. These talented boys and girls undergo an audition and application process to perform
Plymouth International Chorus
with this
historic ensemble. Concerts take place in the United States and abroad.
Each year new students and venues are chosen. Their final concert will take place in 2020.

The graduating class of 2020 has the very fortunate situation to be highlighted throughout the 400th anniversary celebration. While many of the celebrations are deeply rooted in telling stories in the past, this particular project focuses on the future.

Since first grade the class of 2020 has been creating "artifacts" and tucking them away until high school graduation. They have drawn
pictures, written short books, journaled their thoughts about Plymouth, and written letters to people living across the nation explaining why they should visit Plymouth.

Signature Events
"Plymouth 400 is planning Signature Events and Programs for the 2020 commemoration, and these range from multi-cultural festivals to educational webcasts to historical and cultural exhibitions," explained Sheila. The Native story is integral when understanding the history of Plymouth. The first Signature Program is in circulation and is called
Our Story: A Wampanoag History.

The first installment of the story is captured:1614. This is an educational exhibit that tells a 400-year-old piece of history that had a significant impact on the Wampanoag tribe, their relationship with the Mayflower Pilgrims, and the founding of Plymouth Colony. It details the kidnapping of Wampanoag men from  Patuxet, by European explorers. Patuxet was the Wampanoag village that became Plymouth Colony. The free exhibition is created by a Wampanoag design team and told from the Native perspective. This exhibit will grow and continue to tour the region through 2020.

Joseph Davis

Cartmell Funeral Services has now acquired the Richard Davis Funeral Homes. "We wanted an opportunity to expand and serve the greater
Plymouth area," said Kathy Cartmell-Sirrico,
Funeral Director at Cartmell. "We are now able to serve the southern-most area with a facility there. Manomet is a very active community that is not just for summering anymore." Cartmell Funeral Service has been serving the Plymouth area for three generations and prides itself on providing care and compassion based on the values of a family owned funeral home.

"The Cartmell-Davis business will continue to be family run. That is important to the Davis family, and it is important to the Cartmell family," said Joseph Davis. Joseph will continue to serve the community along withe the Cartmell Family Staff. The Richard Davis Funeral Home was first started in 1969 by Joseph's father. He and his wife Jennifer then purchased it in 1999. The acquisition by Cartmell Funeral Service ensures this modern and convenient funeral home will continue to serve the vast growing area.

Joseph Davis graduated from Plymouth Carver High School in 1972 and then went on to the New England Institute in Boston where he graduated in 1974. Joseph received his Funeral Director license in 1975, and was proud to continue in the family profession.
During his time in the funeral home business
he also worked as a firefighter for 34 years!

Cartmell's acquisition of the Richard Davis Funeral Homes will only serve to strengthen the already successful funeral home. "We will continue to bring the best of family values and service to the Plymouth community," added Joseph. Kathy explained her excitement about the acquisition and the future of the business: "A total renovation has taken place at the Manomet location over the last month. Ceilings, walls and woodwork have been updated, as well as new chandeliers and new carpeting throughout.

The parking lot has been sealed, and a new roof was put on." Extensive wall art now adorns the facility painted by Kathy's father and brother. The latter is world renowned artist Greg Cartmell. "Greg mainly works with oils and acrylics. Greg has been commissioned to do many celebrity portraits throughout the years," Kathy said proudly.

The Cartmell-Davis Funeral Homes are
honored to continue serving the community
with the same level of service you have come
to expect from us.

"Right now, we're producing Pre-Commemoration Events, which are community events designed to raise awareness and funds for the organization. These Pre-Commemoration events include our annual Bass & Blue Fishing Tournament and Seafood Event, which we hosted. Forefathers Family Fun Day, Illuminate, and the Midnight Masquerade, which is a big New Year's Eve party December 31st," explained Sheila. "These events will take place each year for
the next five years" she added.

The 3rd Annual Forefathers Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday August 1 from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at the National Monument to the Forefathers in Plymouth, MA.

"This year's event is a celebration of the many
different cultures that make Plymouth the richly
diverse town that it is. Families are invited to join us for this free multi-cultural festival highlighting the cultures of Wampanoag Nation, England, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Brazil, and the iconic history and legacy of the Plymouth Cordage Company," informed Sheila.

Illuminate 2015 will take place in November.
This event is created with peace and gratitude
in mind and aims to inspire the community to
illuminate their lives and the lives of others.
The candle lighting ceremony illustrates the quote from Plymouth Colony Governor William Bradford that says, "As one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled has unto many."

Get Involved
"We are always looking for volunteers to help out at Pre-Commemoration events and programs! Anyone interested can email info@plymouth400inc.org

Now in its third generation, Cartmell-Davis Funeral &
Cremation Service is an independent family-owned and operated funeral home. The legacy of care and compassion continues through personal experience and understanding, serving the people of the greater Plymouth area and surrounding communities.

FAQ:
"How much does a funeral cost?"

The cost of a funeral can vary greatly depending on your choices. Every family has different needs and values that will be reflected in the type of funeral and ceremonies chose

As with any other major event, there are several key components that make up the cost of a funeral.

The funeral home charges will include the basic service fee, which typically covers the charges for the funeral director and other staff resources, use of the facilities, obtaining the necessary permits and paperwork such as the death certificates, coordinating arrangements with third parties such as cemeteries, crematories, clergy, florists and others. Additional charges may also include transportation fees, embalming and other preparation, and limo and hearse fees.

Other charges will have to do with merchandise selected by the family which might include a casket, urns, outer burial container if required, and any other memorial items.

Third parties fees, often referred to as cash advances, are fees the funeral home charges for items and services
purchased on your behalf from others. These can include fees charged by newspapers and online media to publish obituaries, flowers, clergy fees, cemetery fees, etc.

The Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Funeral Rule requires funeral directors to give all consumers an itemized price list which identifies all costs. Some funeral homes will also offer "package pricing" to make it easier for families to choose what is needed.

"Funeral fees certainly vary. Cremation services can start around $1600. The national average for a full service can be up to $15,000 without cemetery cost. Our full service average is more likely between $9,000 and $13,000 depending on the wishes of the family," explained John J. Vincent, Jr., Funeral Director at Cartmell-Davis Funeral & CremationService. "We are willing to work many different ways with families on cost. We offer payment options and plans."

In all cases, the best way to prepare for the cost of the funeral that will be in accord with your values, is to meet
with a funeral director to identify options and receive a price estimate based on those options. Then you can make well-informed decisions based on actual prices for the goods and services you require.

Your funeral director will be your resource and guide through this process. Pre planning your funeral with your director will greatly reduce any loose ends in your preparations and will allow you to put together a funeral that makes economic sense to you.

"We do pre planning seminars twice a year. We have one coming up in the fall," said John.
