Commercial Business Recycling

It's THE LAW

What every Ventura Business Needs to know!
Conserving our natural resources is essential for the health and well-being of our community and our planet.

In keeping with this sentiment, beginning July 1, 2012, the State of California has made business recycling mandatory. According to the newly enacted legislation (AB341), businesses that generate 4 cubic yards or more of trash per week (the equivalent of a large commercial dumpster) and all multifamily complexes with five or more units (regardless of the amount of trash they generate), will be required to recycle.

Compliance is determined by solid waste service capacity. Businesses that share trash service accumulating the 4 cubic yards or more of trash per week must comply even if individually, the businesses do not generate that amount of trash.  READ MORE.

A Zero Waste Program
to reduce unwanted
mail & phone books
Did you know that 11 billion pounds of mail was delivered in the US in 2008? That equals 900 pieces (100 lbs) for every household. Out of that amount, only 40% is recycled.

Over 660,000 tons of phone books enter the waste stream annually. Only 20% get recycled. Nearly 70% of adults in the U.S. "rarely or never" use the phone book.

If you are tired of getting tons of junk mail in your mailbox and would like to save trees, reduce the waste that goes into our landfills and care about reducing greenhouse gas emissions, there is a way you can make a difference.

Join along with the City of Ventura's Environmental Sustainability Division and sign up with Catalog Choice to opt-out of getting junk mail deliveries to your home and business.

Catalog Choice is the largest independent mail preference registry in the United States. When you sign up, it's FREE and you get to opt-out of receiving all forms of advertising mail and unwanted phone book deliveries. The great thing about Catalog Choice is that with a database of more than 5,500 titles (and increasing daily) that you choose what you want to opt-out of receiving. Under the Fair Information Practice (FTC), your information will also be kept private and be protected.

Stormwater:
Best Management Practices
  Vehicle & Equipment Fueling

Spilled fuel can contribute contaminants to runoff from your facility.  Improperly stored rags used to clean up spilled fuel may also result in an illegal discharge.

Implement Best Management Practices

  • Cover fueling areas.
  • Install perimeter drains or slope the surrounding pavement inward with drainage to a sump or an oil-water separator.
  • Pave fueling areas with concrete rather than asphalt, or apply a sealant to protect asphalt from spilled fuels.
  • Install vapor recovery nozzles to control drips.
  • Discourage "topping off" fuel tanks.
  • Use secondary containment when transferring fuel from tank trunks to tanks.
  • Use absorbent materials or mop up small spills rather than hosing down the area. Remove the absorbent materials promptly.
  • Use a rag cleaning service for contaminated rags used to clean up spills, which can not be disposed of in the regular trash.
  • Transport industrial equipment to a designated fueling area rather than using mobile fueling.
  • Clean up spills immediately to minimize safety hazards and prevent discharge to the storm drain system.
  • Train all employees. Your success depends on a well-trained staff.

November 2013
Think Global, but Eat Local this Thanksgiving
by Maryann Ridini Spencer
This Thanksgiving (November 28), and throughout the holidays, as well as all through the year, give thanks, celebrate, and support our local farmers, vendors and businesses by buying products, goods and services locally.

Why Buy Local?

Supporting the local economy by keeping the dollars circulating in and around our home, helps our neighbors, and insures the community's sustainability with a thriving local economy.

For your Health and Safety

In Ventura and the surrounding areas, we are blessed with rich agriculture.  There is a tremendous variety of locally grown foods right in our own back yard. The food literally comes right from the farm to your table.  It doesn't have to be frozen or processed to increase its shelf life.  Fresh translates into healthier and tastier.  READ MORE.
Scratch Food Truck:  Locally Sourced Ingredients From Roots to Wheels

For 10 years Tim Kilcoyne served as Executive Chef and Owner of the popular SideCar Restaurant located on Main Street in Ventura.

"It was a lease issue," said Chef Tim when asked about the recent closing of SideCar Restaurant. "However, we were already doing quite a bit of catering, so it was a natural progression for the business to go 'from roots to wheels.'"

These days, Chef Tim and his staff can be found aboard "Scratch," a Ventura county-based gourmet food truck  that lives up to its name. "We prepare all our food with fresh and natural ingredients everyday, literally from scratch. We make our home at various locales around the area providing 'take-out' and providing catering for events and groups," added Chef Tim.

Chef Tim is also a big believer of "buying local" and works with the Ventura Meat Company, which provides Scratch with high quality grass-fed beef. Scratch also buys direct from local farmers, food stands, and certified farmer's markets.  READ MORE.

Will Rogers Elementary School:  Midtown Ventura Community Council's Adopt-A-School Project for 2013

Students at Will Rogers Elementary School will learn from a living laboratory created on their campus last summer with the help of Midtown Ventura Community Council's Adopt-A-School Project for 2013.  To help prevent stormwater pollution and urban runoff, this partnership project replaced some of the school's hard surfaces with an Ocean Friendly Garden, complete with a linear "bioswale."  A lesson in how Mother Nature cleans and returns water to the ground, the school's bioswale, with its sloped sides and a depressed area filled by rocks, native vegetation, mulch and organic compost, will retain stormwater and trap pollutants and silt that would otherwise would travel to the ocean.

On Wednesday, October 2, the City of Ventura Fire Department joined Will Rogers Elementary School and other local community members to commemorate the newly landscaped areas, and to demonstrate how the new bioswale operates by releasing 500 gallons of water into the swale.  READ MORE.

On Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 10:00am-11:30am, Ventura Water, Aqua-flo and Green Thumb Nursery presented the second in a series of six Water Wise classes.  The topic for the class was "How to employ Ocean Friendly Garden Principles of CPR- Conservation, Permeability and Retention."

GREEN SAVERS:  Maintain Heating Equipment To Lower Utility Bills

Heating and cooling costs account for about $1,000 -- nearly half of a home's total annual energy bill.

Maintaining the efficiency of your home's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on your utility bills. Dirt and neglect can impact the efficiency of your HVAC system and are some of the top causes of heating system failure.

Schedule an HVAC checkup with a licensed HVAC contractor to make sure your system is operating at peak performance. Also, check your system's air filter every month and change it when it's dirty or at a minimum, every three months. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool - wasting energy.
