FREE Waterwise Workshops
Ventura Water, Aqua-flo and Green Thumb Nursery are presenting a series of six FREE Water Wise classes, one Saturday a month from 10:00am-11:30am. Classes began on September 14, 2013 and are currently planned through early 2014.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as much as 50% of the water we use outdoors is wasted from inefficient water methods and systems.
"In Southern California, most communities rely on water that has to be imported from far away places. This process requires a lot of electricity," said City of Ventura Environmental Specialist Jill Sarick. "In Ventura, while we are fortunate that we can rely on all local water sources, more than 30% of our $4.3 million dollar electricity bill is used to treat and move water to homes and businesses within the City. Ironically, we consume all this energy to bring water to our homes and businesses, and what we see many times, is that water used outdoors is often wasted due to inefficient watering systems, over watering, poorly designed landscapes, and a misunderstanding of climate appropriate plants and soil preparations like mulch."
"Water and electricity rates are continuing to rise throughout California. When residents know what works best for their landscape, they can help conserve water resources and thus minimize the negative impact on the environment," continued Sarick. "Remember that water rates consist of many fixed costs. By consuming less water, individuals are helping the entire community avoid the possibility of having to bring in other water sources, which will only further increase rates." READ MORE.

Commercial Business Recycling
It's THE LAW
What every Ventura Business Needs to know!
| |
Conserving our natural resources is essential for the health and well-being of our community and our planet.
In keeping with this sentiment, beginning July 1, 2012, the State of California has made business recycling mandatory. According to the newly enacted legislation (AB341), businesses that generate 4 cubic yards or more of trash per week (the equivalent of a large commercial dumpster) and all multifamily complexes with five or more units (regardless of the amount of trash they generate), will be required to recycle.
Compliance is determined by solid waste service capacity. Businesses that share trash service accumulating the 4 cubic yards or more of trash per week must comply even if individually, the businesses do not generate that amount of trash. READ MORE.

What Can YOU Do To Help Preserve Ventura's Environment?

A Zero Waste Program
to reduce unwanted
mail & phone books
| |
Did you know that 11 billion pounds of mail was delivered in the US in 2008? That equals 900 pieces (100 lbs) for every household. Out of that amount, only 40% is recycled.
Over 660,000 tons of phone books enter the waste stream annually. Only 20% get recycled. Nearly 70% of adults in the U.S. "rarely or never" use the phone book.
If you are tired of getting tons of junk mail in your mailbox and would like to save trees, reduce the waste that goes into our landfills and care about reducing greenhouse gas emissions, there is a way you can make a difference.
Join along with the City of Ventura's Environmental Sustainability Division and sign up with Catalog Choice to opt-out of getting junk mail deliveries to your home and business.
Catalog Choice is the largest independent mail preference registry in the United States. When you sign up, it's FREE and you get to opt-out of receiving all forms of advertising mail and unwanted phone book deliveries. The great thing about Catalog Choice is that with a database of more than 5,500 titles (and increasing daily) that you choose what you want to opt-out of receiving. Under the Fair Information Practice (FTC), your information will also be kept private and be protected.

Stormwater:
Best Management Practices
| |
Vehicle & Equipment Washing & Cleaning
Your facility can contribute contaminants to runoff if wastewater from equipment and vehicle cleaning is rinsed onto parking lots or into gutters or storm drains. Improperly stored contaminated rags may also result in an illegal discharge.
Implement Best Management Practices
- If possible use off-site commercial washing and steam cleaning.
- Use designated wash areas, preferably covered, to prevent contact with stormwater. berm wash areas or use other measures to contain waste water.
- Use alternative washing and cleaning methods to reduce the potential for non-stormwater discharges. If possible, use "dry" cleaning methods, such as wiping down, rather than hosing vehicles or equipment.
- Never discharge wastewater to the storm drain. Discharge it to the sanitary sewer after contacting your local sewering agency to find out if pre-treatment is required.
- Properly contain and dispose of cleanup materials (rags, towels, absorbent materials, etc.)
- Clean up spills immediately to minimize safety hazards and prevent discharge to the storm drain system.
- Train all employees. Your success depends on a well-trained staff.

GREEN BUSINESS PROFILE: WetSand Surf Shop Proud To Be Green
By Maryann Ridini Spencer
"We've approached our business looking at the environmental side of things since we were founded in the early 70's," said owner Chuck Menzel. "However, there's always something to learn and meeting with City of Ventura Environmental Specialist Courtney Lindberg after hearing her speak at a Downtown Ventura Organization meeting made me realize there was more we could be doing as a business."
In 1998, this family owned business established its online site, wsurf.com or wetsandsurfshop.com, and has since grown to become one of the largest online surf sites showcasing products, surf travel and events, art, videos, photography, and living the 'ocean experience.
The WetSand store, located at 46 E. Main Street in downtown Ventura opened its doors in 2008 and carries surfing gear, men and women's clothing and other beach related merchandise.
Even before becoming a green certified business, WetSand implemented such sustainable practices as: outfitting the store with LED lighting and low flow faucets and toilets, assigning each employee their own reusable hand towel for bathroom use, allotting recycling boxes at every employee desk.
"Some of the areas we realized that we could improve on included rethinking the types of cleaning products we used. We learned that there were definitely others that were more eco-friendly," said Menzel. "Additionally, instead of using cardboard boxes at employee desks for recycling, we now have nice, new blue bins provided by the City and we've posted better signage to educate and inform our employees about sustainable practices." | Coastal Cleanup's 2013 Preliminary Results
|
On Saturday, September 21, 2013, The 29th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day took place from 9am-Noon. This life affirming, sustainable event has proved to play an important role in helping remove trash and debris, which can be harmful to humans and even fatal to marine wildlife, from California's coastal waterways.
For the event, in a span of three short hours, residents scoured California waterways at over 850 sites in 53 of California's 58 counties gathering hundreds of tons of trash in the state's largest volunteer event.
"I think it speaks volumes about our community that 900 volunteers came out to one of the five coastal sites to protect our environment and sea life," said City of Ventura Volunteer Coordinator, Rosie Ornelas. "Ventura volunteers made up 32% of all the volunteers County-wide. From groups of scouts and school groups, to corporate groups and families with small children, we are so fortunate to live in a community that truly cares!"
In Ventura County, the preliminary results indicate that 2,846 volunteers picked up 8,462 pounds of trash along 39.6 miles of coastline, of which 1,339 pounds were recyclable.
"The Coastal Commission reported," continued Ornelas, "that some of the more unusual items that were picked up off the shore included a 1904 typewriter, a 'no dumping' sign, a piece of a boat, a table lamp, a 3-piece sectional sofa, suitcases, sneakers, and a sleeping bag, among other items." Locally, one young man found a bottle with a one-dollar bill in it. READ MORE.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE:
Cleaning up the Santa Clara Riverbed
| |
On Tuesday, September 3, 2013, in just under two hours, City of Ventura staff, community leaders and 500 students from California Lutheran Unviersity (CLU) removed 21.28 tons of trash from the Santa Clara riverbed.
"The coordinated efforts from all parties involved continues to be very impressive," said Peter Brown, City of Ventura Manager of Economic Development. "Also impressive are some of the comments we heard the students make during the cleanup, like 'Wow, I had no idea people could live like this'. The value of exposing these young and energetic minds to the disenfranchised can only serve to help the community grow as a whole.
Since 2008, CLU students, as part of the University's "You Got Served" service project, along with city staff and community leaders have removed more than 36.45 tons of trash from the Ventura riverbed. The cleanup is customarily held during the student orientation week introducing them to commitment to service and justice. READ MORE.

LIVIN' GREEN: HALLOWEEN GREEN CRAFTING IDEASBy Maryann Ridini Spencer
|
The celebration of the much-loved holiday Halloween finds its roots in the ancient Celtic festival "Samhain," a celebration of the end of the harvest season. The Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and that the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops. During ritual celebrations, masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits and appease them. Today, we also celebrate the holiday wearing a variety of costumes as we trick-or-treat and party. To celebrate in style and in an eco-friendly fashion, here are some fun GREEN crafts to enjoy and share in preparation for this year's celebration! READ MORE. |
