Commercial Business Recycling

It's THE LAW

What every Ventura Business Needs to know!
Conserving our natural resources is essential for the health and well-being of our community and our planet.

In keeping with this sentiment, beginning July 1, 2012, the State of California has made business recycling mandatory. According to the newly enacted legislation (AB341), businesses that generate 4 cubic yards or more of trash per week (the equivalent of a large commercial dumpster) and all multifamily complexes with five or more units (regardless of the amount of trash they generate), will be required to recycle.

Compliance is determined by solid waste service capacity. Businesses that share trash service accumulating the 4 cubic yards or more of trash per week must comply even if individually, the businesses do not generate that amount of trash. READ MORE.

What Can YOU Do To Help Preserve Ventura's Environment?

A Zero Waste Program
to reduce unwanted
mail & phone books
Did you know that 11 billion pounds of mail was delivered in the US in 2008? That equals 900 pieces (100 lbs) for every household. Out of that amount, only 40% is recycled.

Over 660,000 tons of phone books enter the waste stream annually. Only 20% get recycled. Nearly 70% of adults in the U.S. "rarely or never" use the phone book.

If you are tired of getting tons of junk mail in your mailbox and would like to save trees, reduce the waste that goes into our landfills and care about reducing greenhouse gas emissions, there is a way you can make a difference.

Join along with the City of Ventura's Environmental Sustainability Division and sign up with Catalog Choice to opt-out of getting junk mail deliveries to your home and business.

Catalog Choice is the largest independent mail preference registry in the United States. When you sign up, it's FREE and you get to opt-out of receiving all forms of advertising mail and unwanted phone book deliveries. The great thing about Catalog Choice is that with a database of more than 5,500 titles (and increasing daily) that you choose what you want to opt-out of receiving. Under the Fair Information Practice (FTC), your information will also be kept private and be protected.

Big Bellies:  Taking a Big Bite Out of Trash
By Maryann Ridini Spencer

This past August, The City of Ventura Environmental Sustainability Division, in partnership with the
Downtown Ventura Partners (DVP), installed 30 Big Belly trash and recycling bins. These containers are state-of-the-art, using solar power to self-compact trash, which reduces the amount of necessary pick-ups, saving money. These bins provide easy recycling at each trash container too. This will help Ventura to divert even more recyclables from the landfill, encourage public recycling, and eliminate unsightly scavenging of recyclables.  READ MORE.

Ventura County Fair Food Waste Program is a Big Hit
null
Kaylee Sealund helping out with the Food Waste Program at the Ventura County Fair

It is estimated that up to 15% of the waste that goes to the landfill is food waste that can be composted. A number of businesses in Ventura are already on board with the E.J. Harrison & Sons, Inc. and Agromin Food Waste Program. The newest participant assisting in diverting waste from the landfill? The Ventura County Fairgrounds. From July 31 - August 11, 2013, the Fairgrounds, home to the 138th Ventura County Fair, diverted 6.59 tons of food waste from going into the trash and ultimately our overcrowded landfills.

"We've had a lot of success with the food composting program working with other local businesses and events, and so I thought that approaching the Fairgrounds to become part of the Food Waste Program during the fair operations would be a great way to continue our commitment to zero waste," said Donald Sealund, Field Representative for E.J. Harrison & Sons, Inc.

"We spoke with all the vendors about the program the day before the fair commenced," continued Sealund. "Then we followed up with each vendor on a daily basis to ensure the program was operating according to plan."   READ MORE.

FREE Waterwise Workshops Start Saturday, September 14, 2013

Ventura Water, Aqua-flo and Green Thumb Nursery present a series of six Water Wise classes, one Saturday a month from 10:00am-11:30am beginning Saturday, September 14, 2013. The first class, SoCal Bloomers, will take place at Green Thumb Nursery, 1899 Victoria Avenue, Ventura, CA, 93003.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as much as 50% of the water we use outdoors is wasted from inefficient water methods and systems.

"In Southern California, most communities rely on water that has to be imported from far away places.  This process requires a lot of electricity," said City of Ventura Environmental Specialist Jill Sarick.  "In Ventura, while we are fortunate that we can rely on all local water sources, more than 30% of our $4.3 million dollar electricity bill is used to treat and move water to homes and businesses within the City.  Ironically, we consume all this energy to bring water to our homes and businesses, and what we see many times, is that water used outdoors is often wasted due to inefficient watering systems, over watering, poorly designed landscapes, and a misunderstanding of climate appropriate plants and soil preparations like mulch."

"Water and electricity rates are continuing to rise throughout California.  When residents know what works best for their landscape, they can help conserve water resources and thus minimize the negative impact on the environment," continued Sarick. "Remember that water rates consist of many fixed costs. By consuming less water, individuals are helping the entire community avoid the possibility of having to bring in other water sources, which will only further increase rates. READ MORE.

GREEN SAVERS:  Reduce Your Food Waste. Feed people, Not landfills.

Food is the single largest type of waste going to landfills and incinerators. Americans disposed of approximately 33 million tons of food waste in 2010. When excess food, leftover food, and food scraps are disposed of in a landfill, they decompose and become a significant source of methane - a potent greenhouse gas. Much of the food that is discarded in landfills is actually safe, wholesome food that could have been used to feed people. So when you are thinking about making your family dinner, think about how you can reduce your food waste to save money, help communities, and protect the environment.

Environmental Sustainability Division Attends the CRRA Conference in Pasadena

Jill Sarick give a presentation at the CRRA Conference
City of Ventura Environmental Specialist Jill Sarick spoke about "Demystifying School Lunch Waste Programs" at the California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA) Annual Conference that took place at The Langham Huntington in Pasadena, CA, August 11 & 14, 2013.

On a panel with two others, Jill spoke about the City's pilot recycling program at EP Foster Elementary School.  The program includes a classroom presentation for all grades, paper recycling in the classrooms and offices, student-led waste assessments, food waste composting and milk carton recycling in the lunchroom.

In November 2012, the City of Ventura, EJ Harrison and Gold Coast Recycling met with the National Carton Council, an organization that promotes recycling of cartons, to find out how cartons could be recycled in Ventura.  EJ Harrison and Gold Coast Recycling applied for a grant from the Carton Council to assist Gold Coast with modifying their recycling equipment in order to capture this valuable resource.  As a result, milk, soup, juice and other cartons, which used to go into the trash and wind up in the landfill, can now be recycled with such items as plastic, metal and glass containers.

"Our program stands out from others in three ways: first, we engaged many stakeholders to help identify goals and set targets; second, we educated the students and faculty and most importantly, the custodians about the program's goals and benefits and finally we had the students participate in the lunch waste assessments which gave them a first-hand look at just how much trash they were generating every day," said Sarick.

Since implementation, EP Foster custodian, Judy Melton reports a reduction in the amount of trash bags from 44 to just 7 daily.  They were able to reduce their trash service, thereby saving the school money.

The California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA, founded in 1974) is California's statewide recycling association. It is the oldest and one of the largest non-profit recycling organizations in the United States. They are dedicated to achieving environmental sustainability in and beyond California through Zero Waste strategies including product stewardship, waste prevention, reuse, recycling and composting.

In May 2013, the City of Ventura's Environmental Sustainability Division presented a funny, educational skit to the students at EP Foster.  The performance was filmed with the intention of sharing this information with other schools who wish to implement a similar program.   This presentation is available on DVD.  To get a copy of the DVD and/or for more information, contact Jill at jsarick@cityofventura.net or call her at (805) 652-4501.
