Commercial Business Recycling

It's THE LAW

What every Ventura Business Needs to know!
Conserving our natural resources is essential for the health and well-being of our community and our planet.

In keeping with this sentiment, beginning July 1, 2012, the State of California has made business recycling mandatory. According to the newly enacted legislation (AB341), businesses that generate 4 cubic yards or more of trash per week (the equivalent of a large commercial dumpster) and all multifamily complexes with five or more units (regardless of the amount of trash they generate), will be required to recycle.

Compliance is determined by solid waste service capacity. Businesses that share trash service accumulating the 4 cubic yards or more of trash per week must comply even if individually, the businesses do not generate that amount of trash. READ MORE.

What Can YOU Do To Help Preserve Ventura's Environment?

A Zero Waste Program
to reduce unwanted
mail & phone books
Did you know that 11 billion pounds of mail was delivered in the US in 2008? That equals 900 pieces (100 lbs) for every household. Out of that amount, only 40% is recycled.

Over 660,000 tons of phone books enter the waste stream annually. Only 20% get recycled. Nearly 70% of adults in the U.S. "rarely or never" use the phone book.

If you are tired of getting tons of junk mail in your mailbox and would like to save trees, reduce the waste that goes into our landfills and care about reducing greenhouse gas emissions, there is a way you can make a difference.

Join along with the City of Ventura's Environmental Sustainability Division and sign up with Catalog Choice to opt-out of getting junk mail deliveries to your home and business.

Catalog Choice is the largest independent mail preference registry in the United States. When you sign up, it's FREE and you get to opt-out of receiving all forms of advertising mail and unwanted phone book deliveries. The great thing about Catalog Choice is that with a database of more than 5,500 titles (and increasing daily) that you choose what you want to opt-out of receiving. Under the Fair Information Practice (FTC), your information will also be kept private and be protected.

Stormwater:
Best Management Practices

Storm Drains & Discharge Points

Your facility can contribute contaminants to runoff when vehicles and equipment are improperly operated, maintained or repaired.  Leaky and poorly maintained equipment and improper maintenance work areas might result in illegal discharge.

Implement Best Management Practices

  • Use berming and drainage routing to minimize stormwater run on.
  • Inspect and clean equipment to prevent leaks and excessive buildup of contaminants. Keep drip pans and containers under areas that might drip.
  • Move activities indoors, or cover equipment areas with a permanent roof. Conduct maintenance only in areas designed to prevent stormwater pollution.
  • Never pour materials down storm drains. Connect process equipment areas to the sanitary sewer or a facility wastewater treatment system.
  • Avoid hosing down work areas. Clean small spills with rags, conduct general clean up with damp mops and clean larger spills with absorbent material.
  • Use non-toxic substitutes for chemicals when possible. Recycle greases, oil & filters, antifreeze, cleaning solutions, batteries and hydraulic & transmission fluids.
  • Clean up spills immediately to minimize safety hazards and prevent discharge to the storm drain system.
  • Train all employees. Your success depends on a well-trained staff.

Third Annual Green Jobs Expo: At the Intersection of Green Technology & Job Creation
By Mar
yann Ridini Spencer

Assemblymember Das Williams
at the third annual Green Jobs Expo

"Businesses that make a commitment to implement sustainable practices and develop environmentally-friendly products are smart companies," said Courtney Lindberg, Environmental Specialist for the City of Ventura's Environmental Sustainability Division.

As education and awareness builds worldwide regarding our planet's compromised natural resources and our society's individual and collective impact on the environment, many businesses are adopting "green" initiatives to ensure the longevity of their respective businesses as well as the earth's finite resources.

LtoR: Environmental Specialist Courtney Lindberg and Dana Bogdanich in the Environmental Sustainability Booth

"It's good business," continued Lindberg. "Consumers want to know that when they buy something, that it's not harming them (or the planet) in the process. When it's important to the buyer, it becomes important to the supplier."

This sentiment is also echoed in the 2011 study conducted by MIT, which indicated that 70% of corporate businesses in the United States have adopted environmentally friendly practices, and as a result, have seen an increase in company profitability.

Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson at the Green Jobs Expo

"California's Central Coast has been environmentally mindful for years, and we need to continue that critical forward, long-term sustainable thinking," said California Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson at the recent Third Annual Green Jobs Expo held on June 8, 2013 at the Ventura College Campus. "If we continue to take responsibility for how we impact the planet, it will be good for the economy, good for business, and good for the community."

Assemblymember Das Williams, a longtime advocate of environmental industry and practices, first got involved with the green jobs expo concept while working as an organizer for CAUSE, a Ventura based non-profit and economic justice advocacy group.

"In 2010, after I got elected to the state Assembly, I wanted to continue to develop and expand the Green Jobs Expo in order to continue to bring together people and businesses with green products, educators that train people in the green job workforce and green technology business owners," continued Williams, "CAUSE didn't have the capacity or funds, so I sought out partnerships. This year, through a partnership with the City of Ventura, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Ventura County Community College District, this event has really taken off. "

Livin' Green: Green Your Summer

Summer conjures up visions of vacations and time off, travel, barbecues, and outdoor fun. While you're enjoying the joys of summer, keep these green tips in mind to benefit you and the planet!

Be Cool

* Air conditioning accounts for 14% of home electricity use.  So when it's warm outside, be cool and keep it cool inside by using air conditioners wisely.

*Invest in an energy-efficient air conditioner (look for the Energy Efficiency Rating or EER). The higher the EER, the less it will cost you to operate to achieve a better standard of cooling.

* Get your AC serviced by a professional to ensure it is working efficiently and properly.

* Install ventilating fans in the attic. According to

Consumer Reports, a large fan working under the right conditions can cool and ventilate an entire house for about the energy cost of running the AC in one room.* Set your thermostat to 78 degrees F. This temperature is often recommended as a comfortable and energy-efficient indoor temperature.

* During the heat of the day, keep windows and blinds closed.

Think Green When You Travel

* Fresh air and exercise are good for your health! Walk, bike or take public transportation to get to your destination.

* Travel the road during off-peak days and times (weekdays and after early morning and evening rush hour traffic). This saves on fuel and greenhouse gas emissions.

* If you're flying to your destination, avoid layovers and redeyes.  Frequent takeoffs and landings use more fuel, and the pollution emitted on night flights has a more detrimental impact on the climate.

Save Water in Your Lawn and Garden

Ventura Ocean Friendly Garden

In Ventura, the City recommends that homeowners water their lawns between the hours of 9pm to 9am. Water penetrates the lawn more efficiently during that time and there is less water lost to winds and evaporation. If your lawn starts to show signs of stress, increase run times in increments of one minute until you find the right balance.  Never run your sprinklers more than 13 minutes, or whenever you see runoff occurring, according to the California Landscape Contractor's Association.  The University of California Agriculture & Natural Resources has an informative online site to help you determine watering times, CLICK HERE.

Your lawn's watering schedule will also depend on the type of device, soil type, slope and the plants on your property.  For example, if you have a clay soil running an irrigation system for more than five minutes will result in unwanted runoff.  In the City of Ventura, many properties have a sandy loam soil.  This type of soil has a relatively good absorption rate.  Using a cycle soak (using shorter watering cycles), will help minimize runoff.

A good rule of thumb when gardening is to consider that less is more.  Overwatering grass and plants can cause root damage and increase susceptibility to disease.  So it's best to start with a more conservative watering program.  If you walk across your lawn or grass and see footprints, or if your plants begin to look stressed, then gradually adjust your watering schedule.

Traditional Lawn

Letting your grass to grow longer also provides many benefits.  Taller grass allows for a greater surface area to carry out photosynthesis, this in turn will result in healthier plants. A longer lawn also thwarts weeds from germinating, which can eliminate the need for the application of herbicides and pesticides. You'll also save on grass mowing time, gasoline and wear and tear on garden equipment by keeping your grass a little longer.

"It's best for water to be applied in short cycles with time in between to soak in," said Jeremy Scarlett of Scarlett's Landscape (scarlettslandscaping.com). Scarlett. "Properly designed drip irrigation systems and the use of high efficiency rotating nozzles and/or rotator sprinklers work best, applying water that the lawn and garden can absorb without runoff."

GREEN SAVERS:  Reduce Fertilizer and Pesticide Use
Chemical fertilizers and pesticides applied to lawns and gardens wash off and pollute streams and water bodies. In addition, yard clippings and leaves can wash into storm drains and contribute  excessive nutrients and organic matter to the watershed. Use  chemical pesticides and fertilizers sparingly and always in strict accordance with the application directions. Use compost and other non-toxic alternatives whenever possible. For more information about pesticide use in your lawn and garden, go to: http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/controlling/garden.htm.
