Words of Wisdom
In our monthly newsletter we often seek to encourage or enlighten or look at an eternal truth. This month we'll consider "courage" being demonstrated by our willingness to remain persistent in the face of obstacles. One of my favorite writers, Scott M. Peck, has this to say:
"Problems are the cutting edge between success and failure. Problems call forth our courage and wisdom; indeed they create our courage and wisdom.
"Wise people learn not to dread problems but actually welcome them because it is in this whole process of meeting and solving problems that life has its meaning."
Therefore, as we move through spring to be confronted by many and various obstacles may we remember Scott Peck's words and know that our courage and wisdom will prevail and we will grow stronger as a result.

Spring is in the air! But so is pollen and a whole host of unwelcome allergens. Here are some tips to help you fight off allergies and enjoy the beauty of the spring season. Reduce Pollen Build UpTo tame pollen, wash bedding every week in hot water. Wash your hair and shower before going to bed, since pollen can accumulate in hair. Be Smart & Thorough When You Clean Wear a mask and gloves when cleaning, vacuuming, or painting to limit dust and chemical exposure, and vacuum twice a week. Consider Removing Rugs Limit throw rugs to reduce dust and mold. If you do have rugs, make sure they are washable. Refresh Indoor Air Keep windows closed to reduce pollen entering your house. Change filters in air conditioning units and vents frequently this time of year. Consider Allergy Medicine If you are still experiencing severe problems, talk to your doctor about a seasonal allergy drug that may be appropriate for your symptoms. You can find more information about allergy treatment and locate a Riverside provider near you here. Source: www.webmd.com/allergies/spring-allergy-tips

A Workshop Success Story:
"I was pretty upset when [a] nurse called back in October and told me that my sugar count was 6.7 and I was considered as pre-diabetic. She also told me that I needed to start a low carb diet. This means no sugar, sodas, candy, cookies, cakes, potatoes, pasta, rice, white bread or basically anything that tastes good...I joined a Diabetes Education and Support Program...I have learned how to read food labels, what diabetes is, healthy eating/nutrition, fitness/exercise, stress management, relaxation techniques just to mention a few things. I have started a fitness program and I am walking 1 miles 6 to 7 days a week. I have lost 30 lbs to date and at this time I am adding a few items to my diet to maintain my present weight. I am anxious to have my A1C test in February. I am sure my level will be down. Also, I enjoyed meeting my class members and enjoyed time spent with them every week."

Riverside Care Transitions
Coaching
Update on Care Transitions:
In March 2014, 729 community members were assisted through EVCTP's Care Transitions Intervention. Nearly 97% were successful in avoiding a 30-day hospital re-admission, improving their quality of life and health outcomes.
If you or a loved one is admitted to any Riverside hospital, you may be eligible to receive a FREE Care Transitions Coach. Riverside Health System and other community organizations are working to empower older adults to better manage their care after discharge from a hospital or rehabilitation facility, resulting in fewer unnecessary hospital readmissions. Together we will assist you in making a smooth transition from hospital to home or other care setting. For more information, contact Kim Weitzenhofer, Director of Community Relations at Riverside Center for Excellence in Aging and Lifelong Health, at (757) 220-4751. |
