Taking responsibility for our health in 2013!
As we age and desire to control our destiny in a place of our choosing, we are reminded of the importance of taking responsibility for our health--emotional, physical and spiritual.
Later in this newsletter you will see the opportunity to attend classes on Chronic Disease Self Management offered at various sites in our community. The narrative below is a brief poem that speaks of the acceptance of accountability and responsibility for our lives. Riverside is here to help you stay in control!

"Autobiography in Five Chapters"

Chapter 1:  I walk down a street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I fall in. I am lost. I am hopeless. It is not my fault. It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter 2: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I do not see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in the same place. But, it is not my fault. It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter 3: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see the hole. I still fall in. IT IS A HABIT. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Chapter 4: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around the hole.
Chapter 5: I walk down another street.

Golden Guidance

You know your aging loved ones are at risk for health concerns. Help them avoid financial worries, too, by using these 3 warning signs of financial troubles.

1. Unopened mail is piling up in their house.

As people age, some tasks like the monthly chores of paying bills may become mentally or physically overwhelming, especially if money is tight because of a fixed income or if your loved one is slowing down cognitively.

2. They are complaining about not having enough money.

Does the subject of money come up in conversation more than it used to? Do they make more passing references to the high costs of living expenses like gas, electricity, and groceries? These can be signs that their expenses are too much for them to deal with on their own.

3. There is evidence that they are falling victim to financial scams.

Older adults can be especially vulnerable to scam artists and shady telemarketers -- or even well-meaning friends who have already fallen prey to this kind of scheme -- not only because they often have significant assets but also because they may be lonely or may welcome the attention.
