Nebraska Food System Assessment Report Released The Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition recently completed a needs assessment of the food system in Nebraska that focused on two key components: production and consumption. The assessment examined both perceptions of and participation in local food systems by producers, consumers and other key stakeholders throughout the state. Click here for the full report.

A Team Nutrition "Nutrition and Wellness Tips for Young Children: Provider Handbook for the Child and Adult Care Food Program" handbook was designed to help child care providers create healthier environments for the children in their care.
USDA Aims for Healthier Snacks and Drinks in Schools
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently proposed updated nutrition standards for school snack foods and beverages, including foods offered in vending machines and cafeteria à la carte lines. Learn more about the updated standards here.
School Food Success Stories from Around the Country
Schools across the country are making big changes in the cafeteria this year as a result of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's updated nutrition standards for school meals, but five school districts across the country (in GA, HI, MS, KY, and WI) found ways to serve and sell healthier foods and beverages not just in the cafeteria, but also in vending machines, school stores, and a la carte lines. Health Bucks Intervention Resources Now Available
Health Bucks are $2 coupons that can be used by residents of low-income neighborhoods, and they can incentivize Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamp) users to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers' markets. Visit the Center TRT website to learn more.
Report Examines Competitive Foods in Schools
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released Competitive Foods and Beverages in U.S. Schools: A State Policy Analysis, which provides a snapshot of policies for competitive foods in schools in 39 states, including Nebraska, to determine their alignment with the 13 standards recommended in the 2007 Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Nutrition Standards for Foods in Schools: Leading the Way Toward Healthier Youth. |

NPAS Creates Physical Activity Resource Database
The National Physical Activity Society (NPAS) has created a matrix of over 700 physical activity resources, organized by setting and/or state. Click here to see Nebraska's resource page. Also on the website are archived monthly webinars on a wide range of physical activity issues.
Report Links Active Transportation and Disease Prevention
New research published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine shows that adults who engage in active transportation have better cardiovascular health and lower rates of hypertension and diabetes than adults who do not.
Study Shows the Power of PE
Requiring students to have daily physical education (PE) in school can help them be active for 23 minutes per day, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The authors analyzed 85 past studies to estimate how many minutes of daily physical activity youth could accumulate if various policy changes were implemented.
Study: What Makes People Afraid to Walk?
A recent study conducted in Chicago explored whether people's perceptions of safety in their neighborhood affected how active they were. The study found that residents who perceived a safer, less-violent neighborhood were more likely to walk for either leisure or transport. Meanwhile, residents who lived in neighborhoods with lower incidents of crime were more likely to walk for transport but not necessarily for leisure.
Barriers to Physical Activity in Individuals with Disabilities
Many studies have found that the prevalence of obesity is very high in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This archived webinar explores factors that play a role in reduced physical activity and discusses lifestyle choices and organizational change to improve the health of people with IDD. FDA Creates Breast Pump Resource Website
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published a new webpage, "Breast Pumps: Don't Be Misled - Get the Facts," to help moms choose the right breast pump. The page includes information about choosing, purchasing, and cleaning a breast pump.
Breastfeeding Initiative Encourages Baby-Friendly Designation
The Connecticut Breastfeeding Initiative (CBI) was a collaborative effort between the Connecticut Breastfeeding Coalition and the Connecticut Department of Public Health to promote practices in hospitals that support the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding. Illinois Partners Launch Hospital Breastfeeding Toolkit
HealthConnect One, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Health Services and other partners, has launched a Hospital Breastfeeding Toolkit, a collection of strategies and resources designed to help guide hospitals through implementation of breastfeeding supportive maternity care practices. The Indian Health Diabetes Best Practice: Breastfeeding Support report describes clinical tools and technical resources to effectively support breastfeeding. The intent of this report from the Indian Health Service, Division of Diabetes Treatment and Prevention, is to assist families in childbearing age who are at risk for type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
