Mooing the Most Good

Cattle Drive for the Kettle Drive
The Salvation Army kicked off their Tarrant County red kettle drive with a Texas-style cattle drive. Cowboys mounted their horses with their cattle dogs alongside at in Fort Worth.

It was a Cowtown cattle drive to help kick off to the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Drive. The Salvation Army joked on a poster that it was "Mooing the Most Good" Monday, a word play on its motto, "Doing the Most Good."

National Western Show Focus of Mountain States Association

COLORADO-Braving a snow storm, a hardy group of Texas Longhorn owners enjoyed the annual Christmas lunch and meeting in Castle Rock, Colorado. President Gary Lake reviewed the past year's accomplishments, especially the growing interest in the Texas Longhorn show at the National Western Stock Show in Denver.  About 150 spectators were attracted to the youth, halter and open shows last January--which were sanctioned by both ITLA and TLBAA.
The recent success was attributed to  the cooperation between affiliates of both registries in this major livestock show.
MSTLA President Gary Lake and wife Donna

This year's show will have 10% more entries than last year as interest continues to grow. Judging will be Mike Tomey of Indiana for both days of halter and open classes. Once again Jim Civis along with John Nelson will be at the mic to announce classes and spin yarns of the Texas Longhorn. Randy and Marsha Witte, Lana Pearson, Kenny Richardson and their crew of volunteers will make sure things go smoothly over the course of the two day show.

Along with the visibility of Longhorns in the shows, the Texas Longhorn has become highly visible in the promotion and "branding" of the National Western.  A major attraction has been the annual "downtown Denver cattle drive" that leads the parade to kick off the event.  Instigated by Witte 10 years ago, the Stock Show contracts with Silverado Ranch (division of Searle Ranch) to conduct the Texas Longhorn drive.  Exposure of the Longhorn got a boost when the Stock Show and City of Denver decided to use a Longhorn steer in television promotion of a ballot issue to modernize and expand facilities.  The steer, "Shoot 'em Up" (Winchester x Lady Zhivago) will be on display during next month's stock show to publicize the project.  Texas Longhorns are also a regular feature of the Wild West Show and at a Chamber of Commerce lunch during the National Western.  (About 700 business leaders and dignitaries, seated at tables on the arena floor, will be encircled by a small bunch of Longhorns--herded by cowboys)

Lake singled out Lana Pearson, Kenny Richardson and Gary Cole for their years of dedication to the Texas Longhorn show at the National Western.  He reminded members that the Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association discontinued its regional show in order to "put all of our energy into ensuring the success and growth" of the National Western Texas Longhorn Show.  He thanked the sponsors of buckles for the upcoming show.  They are Tom Matott / Rocky Mountain Longhorns, John and Darlene Nelson / Cloverbloom Ranch, Clyde and Virginia Peek / Peek Land & Cattle Co., Kenny and Karen Richardson / Fossil Creek Longhorns, Royal Bank of Canada, Stan Searle and Gary Lake / Silverado Ranch, Randy and Marsha Witte / Red Ink Ranch.

In the election of officers and directors for 2016, the membership chose to re-elect the entire leadership team.  They are: President - Gary Lake of Ellicott, CO; Vice President - John Nelson of Wellington, CO; Secretary - Katie Miller of Calhan, CO; Treasurer - Darlene Nelson of Wellington, CO; Directors - Art Caldwell of Canon City, CO; J.R. Matott of Castle Rock, CO; Josh Miller of Calhan, CO, and Ron Jones of Salida, CO.

MSTLA members were entertained by (l to r) Gary Lake, Marlene Reynolds and Charlie Searle.  Lunch was held at the Pegasus Restaurant in Castle Rock, CO, owned by longtime friends of the Texas Longhorn business, John and Janie DeLay.  (Janie is the daughter of the late Jean Wickland, whose famous Longhorns included Bold Ruler.)

Among Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association members who braved a snow storm to attend were (clockwise from lower left): Marsha and Randy Witte, Charlie Searle, Joe Brundage, Josh and Katie Miller, Darlene and John Nelson, Ben and Marlene Reynolds.

HATLA Group To Meet Right After the New Year

The Houston Area Texas Longhorn Association (HATLA) has scheduled a meeting on January 9, 2016 at Twin Creeks Ranch. Our guest speaker will be Capital Farm Credit ("CFC"). Many ITLA members are probably familiar with CFC. They have been lending money to farmers and ranchers across Texas for many decades. We will learn about their lending programs tailored specifically to the cattle industry. Whether you are in the market for a new ranch or simply want to finance the construction of a barn or working pens, CFC can help.

HATLA will also be discussing the upcoming Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The event will be held from March 6 - 8, 2016. We hope to see many of our friends at this event. Early registration ends on January 5, 2016. Please go to www.rodeohouston.com for more information.

GLTLA Branding Party

Elizabeth Eckert holding her heifer baby while she gets branded.
The Great Lakes Texas Longhorn Association (GLTLA) met November 7, 2015 for our annual branding party at the home of Dick and Peg Lowe of the Triple R Ranch. We had great weather and wonderful day full of friendship and laughter. We branded lots of young stock and taught some "newbies" about cattle. In our meeting we started designing new t-shirts and elected new officers.

Dick Lowe has stepped down as president and handed the reins to Johnny Hicks of Hicks Texas Longhorns. Bret Eckert has stepped up to the role of vice-president, with Joshua Shaw as secretary, replacing Peg Lowe. I, Missy Hicks will continue on as treasurer.

If you would like to keep up to date with us and see what's going on up here in the great lakes region please just like us on facebook, https://www.facebook.com/GLTLA/?fref=ts!!

We will be meeting again on February 6, 2016 at the home of Henry and Rhoda Detweiler. Hope to see you there, but you can always keep track of us on the GLTLA facebook page.

Salvation Army hosts cattle drive at Ridgmar Mall

FORT WORTH - Just when you thought you've seen it all this holiday season, a group of cows hit the mall Monday morning. Fort Worth cowboys herded nearly one dozen cows around the exterior of Ridgmar Mall, while a group of shoppers gathered to watch.

It was a Cowtown cattle drive to help kick off to the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Drive. The Salvation Army joked on a poster that it was "Mooing the Most Good" Monday, a word play on its motto, "Doing the Most Good."

Kids followed the herd on a small train with Santa Claus, who sported a red cowboy hat. The cows behaved Monday, but in years past several cows made a break for it.

Last year, a loose cow almost ran all the way to I-30. Another year, a cow one smashed into the window at JC Penney.

This year, the Salvation Army brass band got in on the fun, with some western tunes atop a wagon. And bell ringers traded in the traditional bells for red cow bells.

Even the Chick-Fil-A cow joined in on the fun.

The cattle drive is all in good fun, but there's a deeper meaning to help kick off a season of giving.

"I think it's just a fun way to remind people that our kettles are out there, they're part of Christmas, they're part of the season, and it gives us a chance to say what the money goes for that's raised," said Major Jonathan Rich, Salvation Army DFW Metroplex Commander.

The money you put in the red kettles helps the homeless, people fighting addictions, and men, women and children in need.

The Salvation Army is hoping to top last year's kettle drive, which raised $400,000 in Fort Worth alone.

The Salvation Army aims to raise $2 million across DFW during the kettle drive this year.

Chewing the Cud

Margaret was exhausted after staying up half the night nursing a young calf.  She was so tired, she fell asleep right on the couch in the middle of the day on Christmas Eve.

She woke up happy from her cat nap and told her husband, Jim Bob, "I just dreamed that you gave me that wonderful pearl necklace for Christmas, that one we saw down at the mall.  What do you think it means?", she asked with a twinkle in her eye.

Jim Bob hesitated for a moment, but then knowingly replied, "Well, you'll know tomorrow."

Sure, enough, under the tree, Jim Bob had wrapped up a small package and he handed it to his wife.

Delighted, Margaret opened it, only to find a book entitled "The Meaning of Dreams."
