Longhorn Sighting:
RIP BEVO XIV

Bevo XIV, the Texas University Longhorn steer mascot, has died in his sleep at the ranch where he lived last week. Bevo XIV served as the mascot for the Longhorns since 2004 and was on the sidelines for two Texas Rose Bowl victories, including their 2006 National Championship. Along with being there to witness many Texas football games, Bevo also was at many special events, including the second inauguration of former President George W. Bush.

Have you captured a Longhorn moment that should be shared?
Send us your favorite unique Longhorn photos!
We would love to share some of them here in the

Midwest Affiliate Holds Fall Get Together

You can count on a gathering of the MTLA to include great people, great food and great Texas Longhorns.........our October meeting had all these and much more.

The event was hosted by Jim & Jodi Small at their Attica, Indiana ranch and featured brisket and chili soup along with salads and desserts. Some members also brought items to really make a real feast.

Following the meal, we gathered in the dining room of their log home had a short business meeting. The quick meeting touched on the details of our summer show in Princeton and plans for an even better show in 2016. President Steve Paloncy thanked everyone for all the work they did at the show. "If everyone contributes just a little bit, we can all have more time to enjoy one another's company and see great cattle," he said. Several improvements and options were discussed, but the overwhelming feeling was that returning to Princeton next year is the first choice. Repeating at a location always produces more of the public in attendance and more cattle registered. We will hear details about returning to Princeton at our next meeting and make a final decision then.

Nominations for open board and officer positions were opened and many positions now have a candidate from those in attendance. Those who weren't able to come will be given the chance to nominate someone ~ then the election will be held. This year we will have an "e-election."  Paper ballots will only be sent to those members who don't use email. Committee was set up and we will have our annual election of officers and board members at our next meeting.

After the business portion, the meeting was turned over to Mike Tomey to share the best techniques for showing longhorns at halter. A reluctant heifer was led by Matt Tomey. Mike explained methods for making her show her best, how to deal successfully with her mood after being trailered, and having to deal with crowd noise, strange cows and the show arena. Many questions were answered and the presentation will hopefully bring more cows to our haltered show.

Then Jim Small gave everyone a thinly cut piece of walnut from a tree on his property. Those who brought their irons got to brand the wood for a wall hanging plaque. Following this activity, many returned to the house for just one more bowl of Jodi's chili soup.

The day was a great example of Hoosier Hospitality and everyone thanked Jim & Jodi for opening their home to the group. Word of our meetings is spreading and each time our numbers grow. It seems the more fun we have, the more people want to come and join in the next meeting.

Dickinson Cattle Co - 48th Anniversary Celebration

The 2015 Dickinson Cattle Co 48th Anniversary Fall Fling and Customer Appreciation Day was held Oct 3. The attendance was excellent even on a wet and cool day. RSVPs were 133 and final attendees were just a little over 100 interested Texas Longhorn people.

There were 4 educational presentations about World Beef Politics, COOL, Dealing with Cattle Guarantees, and a most informative illustrated presentation by Cliff Little, Guernsey County Extension Specialists.  Cliff spoke on how to have higher conception with AI, how the different heat shots work or don't work and how to breed more cows with less straws of semen purchased.

Although the pig roast and smoked beef ribs were an enticer, the educational presentations were received by a full house. Attendees were mostly from Ohio and joining states, but guests were also from Oklahoma, New York, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Michigan.

Darol Dickinson makes a presentation to the attendees in the ranch pavilion. It was a rainy and cool day. There were 133 people who sent rsvps_ but just over 100 actually attended. Lizz Huntzberry_ an ITLA approved Texas Longhorn judge commented that she hardly knew any of the attendees. It was a crowd either new to the Texas Longhorn industry or people just sniffing the Longhorn tires. It is exciting to see the interest in Texas Longhorns growing. Both were highly appreciated as possible future producers

Linda Dickinson transferred all the semen orders. The one day special semen deal offered all guests a low price of 20% to 60% off of 104 bull's semen. The special semen savings can pay for the cost of driving to the event.

Joel Dickinson demonstrated the fine art of branding just with the right touch. Not too hot, not too cold.  Not too long, not too firm. His brands are artful, humane and readable. The branding and bloodless banding demonstrations are very popular every year. Once first-timers see it done correctly, they can also do it well themselves. Correct brands are clear, readable and only, for sure, readable from one side.

Educational presentations are the primary benefit of the DCCI Customer Appreciation Day, but some young cattle are always available with data, ready to purchase. An assortment of freezer beef steers, heifers and young herd sire prospects were displayed. A total of 42 animals were sold during the day.

While demonstrations were conducted several ranch bus tours were available to family members who were not into the fine art of castration and things like that.

The narrated tours went to some of the larger pastures providing historical Texas Longhorn information about the cows, calves and bulls. Each Customer Appreciation day is slightly like a 5 ring circus, but always better. Texas Longhorns are more western than elephants.

During the Dickinson Cattle Co Customer Appreciation day those not into speeches and cattle demonstrations boarded the buses for ranch tours. Tours went around large pastures of cows, calves and bulls. Some hand fed the cattle from bus windows.

All Quiet on the HATLA Front

HATLA has been pretty quiet the last few months. We will soon be setting up a Fall meeting sometime in November.  We will try to have a Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS)/County Agriculture representative come out and brief the group about some of the programs they offer ranches.

They may offer some great assistance, particularly for newer breeders interested in pasture improvement, pond constructions, etc. They may even participate financially with ranches for things like fence construction, pond construction, etc.

Stay Tuned!

To make sure you get in on this, or for more information, please contact John Lydick of Twin Creeks Ranch in Willis, Texas.  713-784-2358.  www.twincreeksranchtx.com

The BG Futurity and Fall Roundup

CATLETT, VA- The BG Futurity and Fall Roundup went off without a hitch! With a total of 72 entries from 39 participants as far away as Central Oklahoma, Northwest Missouri, Central Illionis, and Eastern New York, was a huge success. With a total of 134 breeders RSVP'ing and 102 in attendance, what started off as a cool morning turning into a plesant midday quickly turned chilly when the win picked up. But our Judges, Arlan Bush from Shelby, NC, Bill Davidson from Chandler, OK, and Butch Brantley from Virginia Beach, VA did a wonderful job.

This event paid out over $5,000 in prize money and is the first part of a two part series. The second Futurity will be heald in conjunction with the Cherry Blossom Sale on April 15th, 2016. The scores awarded at the BG Futurity will be added to the scores awarded at the Cherry Blossom Futurity. The highest score will be the winner of the East Coast Futurity Series and earn an additional check.

On top of the BG Futurity we also branded 37 head of cattle that morning and measured the second largest LWC Satellite Measurement event in the country with cattle as far away as Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Tennessee

We can't thank everyone enough! Lots wanted to help like always and we blew through the branding, the cattle handling for the Futurity was so smooth, and the measurements were done quickly and efficiently.

Chewing the Cud

Old Jed was a bit of a crotchety old coot, but his wife said that if he was going to eat, then he'd better take the grandkids out and show them a good time around the ranch.  He hooked up the wagon and took them up and down and back and forth up the hills and down into the valleys.

Eventually, as they came to a small stream, one grandson piped up and asked, "Grampa Jed, can you talk like a frog?"

Old Jed paused and adjusted his hat onto his forehead, scratching his crusty brow with a bit of curiosity.

"Well, I reckon I could, but why would I do such foolishness?" he muttered.

"Well...'cause Momma said when you croak, we get to go to Disneyland!"
