Longhorn Sighting: Happy "Bike" Trails to you?

You never know what you might find on Craigslist.  This listing was found for a Longhorn handlebarred custom bicycle, listed around only $1500.  Not sure of genetics or if it was sold with a trike at side, but can't think of any trail ride that is not made better with some Longhorn flair.

Have you captured a Longhorn moment that should be shared?
Send us your favorite unique Longhorn photos!
We would love to share some of them here in the

CTLA Report June 2015
Canadian Texas Longhorn Association

As calving concludes and breeding commences, what was a beautiful spring has become a very dry beginning to the summer in western Canada. Rain and showers are beginning to moisten the land; however, they have been spotty. Pastureland is starting to rebound in areas. The hay crop looks dismal at this point. The cattle complex has been strong, which has been reflected in sales.

Plan on visiting Canada this Summer!
Plan on visiting Canada to view great Texas Longhorns this summer!

The CTLA is eagerly anticipating our National Texas Longhorn Show held in conjunction with Westerner Days in Red Deer, Alberta, July 16-19, 2015. Members are encouraged to get their entries in and come out with your guns blazing to make this event a huge success. This show will include the second chapter of the Triple Crown Futurity for yearling heifers. Heifers accumulate points at three shows in western Canada competing for the triple crown championship. The first show was held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on April 18 and the final show will be in Ponoka, Alberta, Sept 25-26 in conjunction with the Horn Showcase and Select Sale.

For our American friends, if you are planning on visiting Canada this summer, make sure your trip includes Red Deer, Alberta in mid July to take in the show.  You will be able to see some of the finest genetics the north has to offer.  You can get in touch with me or any of our members and we can make arrangements to get your boots on the ground at some of our breeders' pastures for cattle viewing.

For more information on what is happening please check the CTLA website at ctlalonghorns.com.

MTLA Holds Annual Show In Princeton Indiana
submitted by Steve Paloncy

The Gibson County Fairgrounds in Princeton Indiana was host for the 2015 MTLA Qualifying Show. Volunteers from the Midwest Texas Longhorn Association began arriving on Thursday to build a Show Arena and runways suitable for a Longhorn show. Registered Texas Longhorns delighted the public assembled to see America's Original Cattle Breed.

Gary Bruch came up from Kansas to judge the event. He kept remarking how impressed he was with the quality of animals shown. During a long day in the heat he judged the Youth Show, Showmanship, haltered and non-haltered animals.

Buckles, plaques and ribbons were awarded to cattle owners for their efforts. Under the watchful eye of Show Chair Dave Hackney all the various parts of the show came off without a hitch. Connie Cohen ran the Silent Auction and Doug Martin held a 50/50 to help cover the costs. Darla Rohr was Show Manager and kept all the official Records and Laurie Green made sure everyone got their awards. Mike Tomey was great as the Arena Manager, whose responsibility was to line up the cattle and protect the judge. Meanwhile, Mike Willinger kept the cattle moving to and from the arena smoothly. Mikala Haag and Missy Hackney even created a Longhorn Logo in the center of the arena.

Missy also welcomed all the ranches, arranged for cold water and answered questions. Judi Paloncy kept track of the last minute additions and deletions. As usually happens at MTLA events, all the members pitched in to help whenever they were needed. It's that spirit that makes MTLA one of the most active and fun affiliates of the ITLA.

See MTLA Show Winners in article below...click below for just a small taste of the sights around the show!

Eagle Butte to Isabel, South Dakota Wagon and Longhorn Cattle Drive

The 2015 Isabel, South Dakota celebration will be very unique and all about cowboys, Indians, wagon trains and cattle drives.
courtesy google maps

The cattle will consist of real pure blood Texas Longhorns provided by some of the forty-two known Texas Longhorn breeders in South Dakota. No correnette (common cows) included. A trophy steer judging will take place at the Friday Night ranch rodeo, followed by the Ranch Rodeo dance.
A three day, (approximately 30 mile), ride from the Orville LaPlante Ranch near Eagle Butte, South Dakota to the Larry Mayer Ranch near Isabel, South Dakota will be held July 29th, 30th and 31st of this year. The wagon train is scheduled to come into the Isabel area in time to kick off the annual Isabel celebration activities on Friday evening.

Those wishing to can gather at the LaPlante ranch on Tuesday evening (28th) to get acquainted. Entertainment will be provided that evening and food catering service provided by Laura Casey will be available. The wagon train/cattle drive will leave the LaPlante ranch early on Wednesday morning, July 29th and will spend the first night just west of Green Grass on the Moreau River. Here we will have Indian fry bread and Indian dessert, hear the history of the area and old time Indian stories by life-long tribe members of the area along with Native drummers, singers and dancers and have prize drawings for South Dakota memorabilia donated by area businesses and Indians.

The second day we will cross the Moreau River taking us through more of the rough river break country where we will most likely encounter an Indian attack. We'll then pick up the Longhorn cattle and continue on to the Stradinger corrals for an evening meal. Life-long rancher Paul Stadinger and other area residents will provide us with another history lesson. Pat Clark and friends will follow with memorabilia, drawings and entertainment. All are welcome to join in.

The third and final day will take us through more ranching and farming area, through downtown Isabel, South Dakota and will camp at the Mayer Family Longhorn Ranch where we will gather under the big top for sloppy joes and Ranch Rodeo.

There will be a pair of unique handmade (in Oregon) halters for the best team and for best outrider/drover's horse.   There will be more drawings for memorabilia including a very unique one of a kind laser engraved with a wagon train scene Henry Golden Boy rifle to one lucky teamster.  There will also be a very unique one of a kind laser engraved with a cattle drive scene Henry Golden Boy rifle to one lucky outrider/drover.

Then it is on to the ranch rodeo where a trophy steer judging by the gathering crowd will take place. The steers will be numbered and anyone from one to one hundred can pick their favorite and place a vote. A one of a kind trophy steer engraved Henry Golden Boy rifle will be awarded to the winner. Then it is onto the Ranch Rodeo Action followed by the Ranch Rodeo Dance.

Now about the young Texas Long Trophy Steer Project. He has been named UNIQUE and for many reasons. He has been approved for registration papers by both the Texas Longhorn Breed Association and the International Texas Longhorn Association as both organizations require a hot iron or acid brand for their holding brand and personal I.D. number. He will be carrying a very unique E-I (Eagle Butte - Isabel) freeze brand on his left side spot and 2015 as his personal I.D. number freeze branded on his right side spot. He will be packing a very unique one of a kind hide. He has a Who's Who pedigree for the breed, some of his linage dating back to the original 1928 U.S. herd. He should mature at around 1800 pounds, which would make him usable as a riding or driving steer, a nice pasture ornament or even a unique pet.

At the Ranch Rodeo, Unique will first be rollover auctioned off, followed by a final sale, all proceeds will be divided evenly between all the different celebration events, (Alumni Association, Dakota Daughter's Steak Dinner, Saturday BBQ Luncheon, Isabel Rodeo Association, Wagon train and etc.)

Anyone wishing to come early please do so, as all steers will be paint branded and trailed daily and penned nightly, with cattle arriving from 7/25 through 7/31/2015.

Houston Area Affiliate's Next Meeting

HATLA is having our next meeting on July 11 at Sexing Technologies in Navasota, TX. Sexing Technologies will be providing a discussion about AI, ET/IVF and giving us a tour of their facility. This should be a great opportunity to learn more about the various alternative breeding opportunities that are locally available.

Sexing Technologies is a leader in the cattle genetics industry and will also be showing us various research projects they are conducting on beef and dairy cattle. Collecting and interpreting genetic data has allowed those industries to predict, with a great deal of accuracy, the characteristics that breeding a particular bull with a particular cow will produce in the calf. Only a few Texas Longhorn breeders keep data on birth weight, weaning weight, and yearling weight. Most of us collect horn measurements but stop at that. This tour and discussion will hopefully entice our breeders to be more diligent in our record keeping and assist us in becoming more scientific and deliberate in our breeding strategies.

We expect a good turnout and I will submit a follow up report after our meeting. Please let anyone interested in attending, whether they are a HATLA member or not, contact me for more information.

Chewing the Cud

A blind man enters a bar and find his way to a barstool.  After ordering a drink, and sitting there for a while, the blind guy yells to the bartender, "Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?"

The bar immediately becomes absolutely quiet.  In a husky, deep voice, the woman next to him says, "Before you tell that joke, you should know something. The bartender is blonde, the bouncer is blonde and I'm a 6' tall, 200 pound blonde with a black belt in karate. What's more, the fella sitting next to me is blonde and he's a weightlifter. The woman to your right is a blonde, and she's a pro wrestler. Think about it seriously, mister. You still wanna tell that blonde joke?"

The blind guy says, "Nah, not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times."
