Longhorn Sighting: Used Cow Lot
According to the Missoulian, it was a horn heist of epic proportions. For years, the 350-pound Longhorn skull sculpture rested atop the gatepost of Garry Mentzer's Used Cow Lot in Drummond, Montana. Last week, bandits made off with it, only to ditch it on the outskirts of town with $100 and an apology note. (Photo by Michael Gallacher Read the article or buy the photo here)

Midwest Affiliate Treated to a Behind the Scenes Look at the Purdue Vet School submitted by Steve Paloncy
In Indiana, meetings are not only informative, but they are fun too. Members of the Midwest Texas Longhorn Association were in West Lafayette Indiana this weekend to enjoy the warm spring temperatures and clear skies. Those who arrived early visited SpringFest on campus where each college hosted demonstration booths and provided information on what they are doing in their area of the Ag School. Members got to survey the flowers and plants, race goldfish, visit the insect petting zoo and even taste some of the bugs we'll be swatting in the months to come. President Steve Paloncy suggested to Evan, the Bug Chef, he may want to sauté the mealworms in bacon grease next time instead of butter. Students working there agreed! There were many other lunch opportunities besides bugs with students cooking brats, burgers and hot dogs all over the campus.
At 1:00 p.m. the group met in front of the College of Veterinary Science at the Continuum Statue to be escorted to our meeting room. Actually, it was a huge barn with auditorium seating and audio visual equipment located between the stalls. The horses, cows, calves and llamas welcomed our group and made us feel at home but when we got down to business, they remained quiet. They know the drill when class is in session.
We held our normal business meeting for about an hour but most business was tabled since planning for our show is underway. Show Chair Dave Hackney explained that our ITLA annual show will be at the Gibson County Fairgrounds in Princeton on June 13th. Judge will be Gary Bruch from Missouri. We will conduct a pee-wee show, youth show, showmanship competition along with the haltered and non-haltered shows. Press releases and sponsorships in the area have been prepared, the arena is booked, bleachers and show ring will be in place and ready. Dave asked everyone to bring lots of cattle so we can make a great impression on the public who is expected to attend. He also asked that members provide items for our silent auction table to help make money to offset the costs of the show. The show is also open to all ITLA members who wish to attend. Information and registration forms will be emailed and also can be found on our website at http://www.midwesttla.com/
Following our brief meeting, the group was introduced to Bethany Funnell, DVM. She gave an overview of the latest studies and state of the art techniques for AI, In Vivo and In Vitro fertilization. As the technology is refined and adopted she has noticed a huge increase in the use of these methods. Both beef and dairy operations worldwide want to increase the number of offspring from donors of high genetic merit. This results in lower individual embryo viability, a significant increase in embryo production and a net increase in offspring born. She fielded questions from our group and was genuinely impressed with the knowledge of the subject our group had.
Our host for the day, Jonathon Townsend, DVM, PHD then walked our group to several buildings where services are provided and classes conducted. He gave us VIP treatment as we visited the emergency entrance, large animal surgical suites, exam rooms and holding stalls. He was very helpful in over viewing how our members could access services provided. To end his tour he took us to visit Betsy #4, a cow who had an opening made in her side to access her inner workings. To really know what a rumen is and what goes on there, you have to reach in and feel...this turned our "hands on" experience at Purdue into a "hands IN".
Purdue is known worldwide for producing the best veterinarians and now we know why. With people like Drs Funnell and Townsend on their team they are bound to be winners. They made us feel very welcome and important and represented the University and the veterinary community with total professionalism. Our thanks to Purdue, their staff and the College of Veterinary Medicine for a truly informative and memorable experience.

ORVTLA Booth at the Ohio Beef Expo
The weekend of March 20th-22nd the Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association set up a booth at the Ohio Beef Expo in Columbus Ohio. Members took advantage of the opportunity to meet with old friends, make new ones and mingle with people from all aspects of the beef spectrum. It was a good opportunity to promote Texas Longhorn cattle to others interested in the beef industry as well as learn about some of the latest developments that could assist us in our operations.
We are looking forward to our upcoming show, July 18th at the Wayne County fairgrounds in Wooster, Ohio. Looking for a great turn out, hope to see many of you there.
Pictured manning the booth at the Ohio beef expo is Tim Mills, Ed Callen, Linda Peirce, and Josie Morris talking with a couple possible future Texas Longhorn owners.
Youth Working the Booth
Kara Dickinson & Cole Morris are also seen here proudly working the Longhorn booth at the Ohio Beef Expo, March 20.
Contacts at the Beef Expo have historically resulted in numerous contacts with the public which gives exhibitors and producers the opportunity to tell the Texas Longhorn Story and selling them Texas Longhorn cattle and byproducts.
A successful booth means working the crowd; peddling; making friends and just doing business in every way.
Thanks for the pictures and story, Andrew Morris and Darol Dickinson.

Chewing the Cud
Jeb had just taken over as pastor of the local Cowboy Church. He was visiting the homes of the folks in his flock.
At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a card and wrote "Revelation 3:20" on the back of it and stuck it in the door.
When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, Genesis 3:10."
Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he quickly understood and broke up in laughter.
Revelation 3:20 begins "Behold, I stand at the door and knock." Genesis 3:10 reads, "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid, for I was naked."
