Longhorn Sighting: South Dakota

Photo: Colleen Brunner,
Butte County Post correspondent

There is a rich history of trail drives, where cattle, primarily Longhorns, were driven across the fence-less prairie in the center of the U.S.. They meander through various states from Missouri in the east to the western row of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico.
An effort is underway to re-trace the Great Western Cattle Trail by placing eight-foot concrete markers all along the trail. Currently there are five such markers placed in South Dakota with at least another five in the works. Read the article by Colleen Brunner at rapidcityjournal.com

President's Message

Dear ITLA Members,

Happy Thanksgiving!

We just returned from Oklahoma City and the ITLA Convention and Championship Show. We had a capacity crowd and by all accounts it was a big success. I want to congratulate Lizz Huntzberry, winner of the Happy Shahan Award, Jim Tomey, winner of the Pioneer Breeder Award, and the family of Joe Assad for his winning of the Jim Palmer Award. These are very deserving re

cipients of our highest honors.

I want to thank Trish David, our office manager, for all of her work in putting together a great event. Nelson Hearne and a number of the NETLA members were instrumental in making sure the Championship Show went off without a hitch. Vice President Gary Don Taylor worked for many months planning this big event. I also want to thank Wes Chancey and the TLMA Board of Directors for their leadership and vision in helping to put on the biggest united event in our industry. If you have never attended the Longhorn Extravaganza you are missing out on the premier event in the Longhorn world. Make plans to attend next year's event.

2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the ITLA. 25 years ago a handful of visionary and dedicated Texas Longhorn breeders came together to create the ITLA.  I am excited about celebrating our 25th anniversary throughout 2015 and honoring those founding members. Watch for more details in the coming months on our anniversary celebration.

With Thanksgiving upon us, I reflect upon the blessings that this great breed of cattle give us; the joys of raising these majestic animals, the friendships made, the hard work and the satisfaction of all of this at the end of the day.

My best to you and your family from the ITLA this Thanksgiving.

Larry Lonero

ITLA President

ITLA Championship 2014

By Randy Witte

Randy Witte_2012 The annual ITLA Convention, Championship Show and Futurity was held for the third straight year in downtown Oklahoma City at Cox Convention Center, and for the third year it was successfully part of the Longhorn Extravaganza.

The Extravaganza, hosted by Texas Longhorn Marketing Association, offers that association's annual Longhorn World Championship Horn Measuring event and World Championship Sale, all of which ties in well with the ITLA events. Still, it was a lot to pack into two days October 17-18.

Cattle began arriving on Wednesday, the 15th, and continued to arrive throughout the day on Thursday and all were in place when the events got underway at 9 a.m. Friday. Folks traveled from near and far to attend, but the Northeast Texas Longhorn Association group received credit and recognition for traveling farthest. The NETLA crew drove straight through with their cattle for 24 hours from the northeast part of the country.

Competition got underway in simultaneous pens in front of the audience. People could keep abreast of both the horn measurements for bulls going on to the left, and to the ITLA's haltered show in the right-hand arena. Lana Hightower of Van, Tex., served as judge for both the haltered and non-haltered show, which was held the following day.

Top winners in the haltered show included: Grand Champion Haltered All-Age Female, Nel-Tam Creamsickle, owned by Nelson and Tammy Hearn of Richland, Pennsylvania. Reserve Champion went to Hotshot Silver, owned by Taylor Ranch of Okarche, Oklahoma.

Grand Champion Haltered All-Age Bull was Kool Shade, owned by Taylor Ranch, while First John 4:9, owned by Assad Ranch of Houston, Tex., was named Reserve Grand Champion. Joe Assad had passed away recently, but his cattle were already entered in the show and the family decided to send them up to Oklahoma City, as Joe had intended. They were exhibited, as usual, by Bob Dube, who has shown the Assad cattle for years.

Grand Champion Haltered All-Age Steer was Camo, owned by Larry Smith II and his wife, Heatherly, of Glen Rose, Texas. Camo, a five-year-old, won the same championship a year ago. Reserve was won by Chance, a 12-year-old owned by Taylor Ranch.

The haltered show concluded with Produce of Dam (two or more animals from the same dam by natural birth, either sex) and Get of Sire (three or more animals by the same sire, either sex). The Dam class was won by Miss Dakota, a five-year-old cow owned by Double JR Longhorn Ranch of Rocksprings, Texas. The Sire class went to Rio Silhouette Chex, a three-year-old bull owned by Taylor Ranch/Twin Creek Ranch.

The second annual Championship Futurity followed the haltered show, and was judged by Craig Perez, Kathy Kittler, Rick Friedrich, Molly Clubb and Nelson Hearn. The high and low scores were discarded and the other scores were totaled to determine placings.

First-place futurity winners included:

Heifers born October 2013 through December 2013: Jamafudge, owned by John and Christy Randolph. Heifers born July '13 through September '13: Chosen to Win, owned by Kevin and Jodi Bryant. Heifers born April '13 through June '13: Bonita Bandita, owned by Brent and Cindy Bolen.

Heifers born February '12 through May '12: BR Topliner, owned by Mike Beijl. Heifers born October '11 through January '12: Rex's Red Rose, owned by Craft Ranch.

Bulls born October '11 through January '12: DOS Grande Chex, owned by Trey Whichard. Bulls born October '13 through December '13: Game Changer, owned by Robert and Lisa Van Liew. Bulls born April '13 through June '13: 5D Axman, owned by Dan Huntington.

Bulls born January '13 through March '13: Outlawed, owned by Smith/Taylor/Gravett Partnership. Bulls born July '12 through December '12: GD Kool Shade, owned by Taylor Ranch. Bulls born January through June '12: Hubbells 20 Gauge, owned by Hubbell/Mast/Helm Partnership.

Rounding out the first day's activities was an ITLA Judging Clinic, hosted by ITLA Pres. Larry Lonero, an ITLA general membership meeting and open board meeting, followed by the TLMA sale.

At 8 a.m. next day, the horn measurements began, this time with heifers and cows, and the ITLA Youth Championship Show got started.

These are the top youth winners.

Midwest Affiliate (MTLA) Meets

The Midwest Texas Longhorn Association met at the home of Darla Rohr and Mike Kindred for our year end meeting.  A slate of nominations was approved by those in attendance and our officers for 2015 will be Steve Paloncy, Pres; Johanna Rippey, VP; Darla Rohr, Secretary and Judi Paloncy, Treasurer.  Filling the two board vacancies are Dave Hackney and Jim Small.

Several of the members gather for a Kodak moment.

We enjoyed some terrific chili and cornbread and several wonderful deserts as we discussed plans for 2015.

Special thanks to Darla and Mike not only for the terrific meal, hosting the meeting and showing off their cattle, but the wonderful Port-O-Let they rented for the occasion.

Ohio River Valley Unsung Hero Award goes to Morris Cattle Company

The Morris Family, Andrew, Abby and their children Cole, Josie and Lane, currently operate a grass fed beef herd of 100 plus Texas Longhorn cattle on their farm at Walhonding, Ohio.

The focus of their beef operation is to educate consumers on the difference between grass fed Longhorn beef and the feed lot or imported beef that many find in retail stores. Even with a herd of this size they still find time even when they can't keep up with the demand for the beef they raise.

Andrew (Firefighter), Abby (Health Care) and their children still make time to promote Texas Longhorn Cattle every chance they get.

Andrew has served as a director for the last two years for Ohio River Valley, he is currently our representative to Ohio Cattleman's Association and was just elected to be the next President of Ohio River Valley. Abby has assisted with several different activities for our affiliate promoting Texas Longhorn Cattle and supporting our organization.

They were the first to hold a Field day when we started doing them again three years ago. They are always ready to do whatever needs to be done when our annual show comes around.

Congratulations to the Morris Family, Ohio River Valley's 2014 Unsung Heroes.

Chewing the Cud

A very unassuming guy walked up to the Pearly Gates, looking to be admitted.

St. Peter says to the guy,

"I can't see that you did anything really good in your life, but you never did anything bad either. I tell you what, if you can tell me one really good deed that you did, I'll open Heaven's Gates to you."

So the guy says,

"I was driving down the road and saw a gang of bikers assaulting this poor girl. So I pulled over, got out my car, grabbed a tire iron and walked straight up to the gang's leader--a huge ugly guy with a studded leather jacket, bald head tattoos and hair covering his whole body, and a chain running from his nose to his ear.

Undaunted, I ripped the chain out of his nose and ear and smashed him over the head with the tire iron. Then I turned around and, wielding my tire iron, yelled to the rest of them, "You leave this poor, innocent lady alone! You're all a bunch of sick, deranged animals! Go home before I teach you all a lesson in pain!"

Impressed, St. Peter says,

"Really? I can't seem to find this in your file. When did this happen?"

"Oh, about two minutes ago."
