Rocky Mountain Select Sale
Rocky Mountain Sale Posts Strong Results
Rebounding from three years of drought conditions across much of the West, the Rocky Mountain Select Sale recorded prices that were more than twice those paid last year. "The combination of good cattle, good weather and significantly improved attendance produced a solid market," according to sale manager Gary Lake. "Cattle sold at realistic prices that reinforced confidence in the breed, while providing sellers with prices that will bring them back next year." Lake noted that the addition of the Rocky Mountain Winchester Futurity to the event generated a lot of interest and was a factor in bringing Longhorn owners from as far away as Michigan, Oregon and Florida. At least 15 states were represented at the combined two-day "Rendezvous."Overall sale average, including two bulls, two steers and a special semen lot on Rimrock and Mr. Chex, was $2,052. Yearling heifers averaged $1,575. The high selling 2013 heifer, WSR Amiga, tracing to Doug Hunt and Bob Loomis breeding and raised by Woodson School Ranch, sold for $2,900 to Pace Cattle Co. of Saratoga Springs, Utah. Two year-old heifers averaged $2,333 with a Pace consignment, PCC Rhinestone, a granddaughter of JP Rio Grande and Farlap Chex bringing $4,000. Tom Matott of Castle Rock, Colorado was the buyer.

Cows and pairs averaged $2,371 with the high selling lot, Kissy Lips by Top Caliber out of a daughter of The Shadow, drawing a bid of $5,700. She was consigned by Cliffhanger Genetics of Sheridan, Wyoming and went to Trey Whichard of Sugar Land, Texas. The Rocky Mountain Select, now in its 16th year, has always judged the sale cattle as an added incentive for consigning quality animals. This year the placements were determined by judge Alexandra Dees of CR Ranches of Harper, Oregon. |
Champion Jr. Heifer, Patriot's Friend, was consigned by Randy and Marsha Witte and purchased by Searle Ranch of Monument, Colo.
|
To top the Jr. Heifer class she selected Patriot's Friend, a granddaughter of Top Caliber and Unlimited consigned by Randy and Marsha Witte of Peyton, Colo. who collected a $500 premium in addition to the sale price of $1,800 paid by Searle Ranch. Placing second was Hunts Gunmans Pizzazz, by Clear Win out of a Hunts Demands Respect daughter. Consignor was Doug Hunt of St. George, Utah with the Wittes purchasing the yearling for $2,600. She sold for $2,400 to Searle Ranch. Champion Sr. Cow was K.C. Joylynn, a Ron Jones bred cow consigned by Kent Bladen. Her $1.000 in prize money added to the $4,100 paid by Cliffhanger Genetics of Sheridan, Wyoming. In all, $5,000 was paid out on nine consignments. At least a dozen sale consignments had already divided thousands of dollars plus some presentation Henry rifles in the Futurity on the day before the sale.
Stan Searle observed that "We have been putting on Texas Longhorn sales in Colorado for 33 years-including some that set records--and I don't recall ever seeing a group of sellers and buyers who enjoyed an event any more than those joining us this year. He credits "our Sponsors and those who take 'ownership' in this important national Longhorn event, year after year-especially those who are willing to put some of their best cattle on the block." It takes an experienced team to have a successful Longhorn sale in this environment, he contends, and auctioneer Joel Lemley "brings an energetic, no-nonsense style that builds trust in the process--which serves both buyer and seller." Searle expressed optimism about "the quality of cattle and the attendance that we will see here next year."

MTLA Meeting Minutes
The 14th meeting of the MTLA was held on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at the home of Steve & Judi Paloncy in Perrysville, Indiana. After lunch was served the meeting was opened by introductions from everyone. Dr. Bret Marsh, State Veterinarian and Dr. Craig Bowen, District 4 Veterinarian were present to talk about the new law from BOAH about Travel & ID Requirements involving cattle. They were very informative and able to answer many questions.
Business Meeting~
Secretary, Darla Rohr, read the last meetings minutes from June. Treasurers report was read by treasurer Judi Paloncy with an accurate balance given. It was requested a credit/debit card be allowed for online purchases to make things faster and easier. Jim Small made a motion to get the card and Glen Lechlitner seconded this motion. All in favor of this motion, the motion passed. Johanna Rippy was also able to give a current update on a member balance and a reminder if you sell cattle to let Johanna know the names and current information for a free membership for the remainder of the year. The ITLA membership is also available at no cost so keep those names handy and take advantage of this.
Old Business~
The 2014 final review of the show was brought up for discussion. It was suggested that we have a master showmanship for the youth as part of our next show. Courtney Tomey is over our youth program and we will see if she has any thoughts on this. Any other ideas are always welcome and appreciated. Its always good to improve the show each year.
New Business~
A Certificate of Deposit request has been made for our account money as an investment. The minimum amount for deposit is being checked into as well as length of term and other rules for this and will be further discussed.
It's also time to be thinking of the 2015 Election of Officers and Directors. Glen Lechlitner and Gail Beach are off the board. Nominations will be accepted for board members. Be thinking of someone you want to nominate for this position. Glen Lechlitner may be our next show chairman given some good tips and shadowing from Ed Lewis. The 2015 show could possibly be held back in Veedersburg, IN. Further details will be discussed at the next meeting for some final answers. Submitted by ~ Darla Rohr Secretary |

Chewing the Cud
A woman who died found herself standing outside the Pearly Gates, being greeted by St. Peter. She asked him, "Oh, is this place what I really think it is? It's so beautiful.
I can't believe it...Did I really make it to heaven?"
To which St. Peter replied, "Yes, my dear, these are the Gates to Heaven. But you must do one more thing before you can enter." The woman was very excited, and asked of St. Peter what she must do to pass through the gates. "Spell a word," St. Peter replied. "What word?" she asked. "Any word," answered St. Peter. "It's your choice." The woman promptly replied, "Then the word I will spell is 'love', L-O-V-E"
St. Peter congratulated her on her good fortune to have made it to Heaven, and asked her if she would mind taking his place at the gates for a few minutes while he went to the bathroom. "I'd be honored," she said, "but what should I do if someone comes while you are gone?" St. Peter calmly reassured her and instructed the woman to simply have any newcomers to the Pearly Gates to spell a word as she had done.
So the woman is watching the beautiful angels soaring around and she sees a strangely familiar man approaching the gates. She soon realizes it is her ex-husband.
"Where am I?" he said as he stumbled up. "Heaven," she replied incredulously.
"Wow," he replied, astonished. "Did I really make it to Heaven?" To which the woman replied, "Well, not yet. You just need to spell a word first." "What word?" he asked.
The woman responded, "Czechoslovakia."
