President's Message
null
with Larry Lonero

Dear Fellow Breeders:

First, my wife Robyn and I would like to thank all of the great Longhorn Breeders who sent well wishes and prayers to our family after our accident in Colorado on July 4th. I am on the mend and Robyn is doing well. The outpouring of well wishes and prayers was humbling. We have a great group of people involved in raising Texas Longhorn cattle.

It's a busy time of the year for the ITLA. We are currently putting the finishing touches on the
2014 Longhorn Extravaganza: ITLA Convention and Championship Show in Oklahoma City held on October 17th and 18th. The Second Annual ITLA Championship Futurity and the ITLA Judges Clinic will also be held in conjunction with the Convention and Championship Show. So, as you can see, there is something for everyone at this event. There are still a few days left to enter your animals or register for the Convention. This event has grown into the largest Texas Longhorn event in our industry. I hope that you will plan on attending.

We are just completing our annual elections for ITLA Board of Directors and Officers. Congratulations (and a BIG thank you for stepping up!) to the following for being elected:
ITLA President: Larry Lonero (Brenham, TX)
ITLA Vice President: Gary Don Taylor (Okarche, OK)
Board of Directors: John Lydick (Houston, TX)
Board of Directors: Trey Whichard (Junction, TX)
Board of Directors: Mike Tomey (Bedford, IN)
Board or Directors: Mark Stewart (Ponoka, Alberta)

Watch for a big (HUGE) announcement coming soon from the ITLA regarding the largest Livestock Show and Rodeo in the world. Hint: If you own steers (haltered or not) and want the chance to win a lot (A LOT) of money you will want to hear this news. Stay tuned for an announcement coming soon!

Hope to see you all at the ITLA Convention and Championship Show!

Larry Lonero
President, ITLA

Rocky Mountain Winchester Futurity

The 2014 Rocky Mountain Winchester Futurity was held in conjunction with the 16th annual Rocky Mountain Select Texas Longhorn Sale at the Latigo Trails Equestrian Center in Falcon, Colorado on August 8th.

The Futurity featured 69 entries comprising eight classes of 2011-2013 females and one class of 2013 bull calves. "We were pleased with the judges, the cattle and the feedback we got from the participants, and it's definitely something to build on," says Tom Matott of Castle Rock, Colorado. "This was a first for a lot of us, but it went very well and we're excited about next year and what this event is going to do for the business in this part of the country." Matott added that the 2015 Rocky Mountain Winchester Futurity is set for August 7 at Latigo Trails.

Judging the event was the five-man panel of Dan Jones, Washington, Indiana, Rick Friedrich of Sugar Land, Texas, Craig Perez of Comanche, Oklahoma, Tony Mangold of New Braunfels, Texas and Kerry Mounce of Bennington, Oklahoma. Entrants represented programs from Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Oregon and Michigan.
Shown with Tom Matott (l.) were futurity judges Tony Mangold, Kerry Mounce, Dan Jones, Craig Perez and Rick Friedrich. Futurity registrar J.R. Matott, right.

Major Futurity sponsors were John and Debra Helm, Helm Cattle Company, Red Oak, Texas; Frank and Michelle Hevrdejs, Deer Creek Longhorns, Brenham, Texas; Hubbell's 20 Gauge Partnership, Mark Hubbell and Andy Mast; the Hudson-Valentine Sale; International Texas Longhorn Association (ITLA); "The Cow Gals", Kathy Kittler and Nancy Dunn; Tom Matott, M 2 Land & Cattle Co., Castle Rock, Colorado; Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association (MSTLA); Searle Ranch, Monument, Colorado; Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America (TLBAA); Randy and Marsha Witte, Red Ink Ranch, Peyton, Colorado, and the 2015 Winchester Futurity of the North.

Custom-engraved Henry "Golden Boy" rifles were awarded to the nine champions, with 75 percent of all entry fees in the jackpot paid to the top several places in each class.

While Tom Matott chaired the event and worked tirelessly to get it organized, he stated that "it took a tremendous team effort to put this together, run the event smoothly and on schedule, and to quietly move the cattle in and out of the judging ring." Responsible for logging in entries and tabulating the winners' cash payback and trophy rifle awards were Tammy King and J.R. Matott. Terry King traveled from Westville, Florida to serve as ring steward.

Cattle handling volunteers included T.J. Farnsworth with his kids, John and Kase, and Chip Farnsworth with his kids Tyler, Baylee and Mckenzie. Select Sale yard foreman Travis Casey claimed that "the Farnsworth outfit pitched in and did the lion's share of moving and re-penning the stock. They were great!"

Support for the first Texas Longhorn futurity in the Western US came from a diverse assortment of producers and commercial entities. In addition to the 12 major sponsors listed above, other contributors included: Blind Corners & Curves; Cavender's ; Glenrock Distributing; G.J Gardner Homes; Granite World; Hired Hand Website Software; K2 Construction Management; Kirella Homes and Stone Concepts Inc.

In discussing plans for next year, Tom Matott stated that "the challenge will be to make sure we are prepared for a 50 percent increase in entries-based on how enthusiastically the first futurity went over and the people who are already making their plans to return." Information on next year's event is available at www.rockymountainwinchesterfuturity.com.

An Active Summer For ITLA Affiliates

by Randy Witte

The International Texas Longhorn Association's regional affiliate associations enjoy various activities during the summer months. These mostly involve Texas Longhorn shows, field days or instructional clinics, or meetings held just to get together for a good visit over lunch.

MSTLA

This last idea seemed like a good one for a couple of regional affiliates, the ITLA's Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association and the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America's Mountains and Plains Texas Longhorn Association. Our hosts were Gary and Kay Cole of Penrose, Colorado. Kay fixed a great Mexican fiesta lunch for us, and Gary provided the entertainment, which tested our historical knowledge of the chuck wagon in a "quiz game" format.

Gary had done more than a little research on the subject and posed a variety of questions, which we pretty well got right. Questions like, who invented what came to be known as the chuck wagon?

Click on the picture above for more photos.
Or CLICK HERE

And that was Charlie Goodnight, of course, the pioneer cattleman who jumped out to trail Texas Longhorn cattle to northern markets right after the Civil War. The chuck wagon would be indispensable, Charlie knew, to keep a crew of cowboys fed and watered for a lengthy cattle drive.

He used a surplus Army wagon and fitted a large pantry box to the back of it, with a door that folded down to make a work table for the cook.

What provisions were carried in those early-day chuck wagons?

We chimed in correctly with answers like dried pork, beans, flour, salt and pepper, sugar, vinegar, potatoes and onions, some dried fruits, Arbuckle coffee and water. Of course, beef was readily available, but anything consumed on the trail was likely to be a critter of lesser value, perhaps one that couldn't keep up with the herd.

Someone suggested a bottle of whiskey might have been stashed in the wagon in case of snakebite. According to Gary's research, there was some whiskey along on Goodnight's first wagon-"but it wasn't a bottle," Gary said. "It was a barrel."

With that, Gary went out to gather a couple of his ridin' steers, for pictures and for, well, riding, for anyone who wanted to climb aboard.

                                                                             NETLA

Meanwhile, the Northeastern Texas Longhorn Association continues as one of the most active affiliates in ITLA. They held a two-day show the end of June and exhibited some mighty fine Texas Longhorns, as evidenced by the accompanying photos.

But the best news received from the NETLA folks is that they will again be part of the ITLA World Championship Show and Convention coming up October 17-18 in Oklahoma City, all part of the Longhorn Extravaganza at Cox Convention Center. The association has raised plane fare for a large contingent of their youth to fly out for the competition while a convoy of parents trailer their cattle to meet up with them in OKC.

NETLA can always be counted on to provide a lot of hands-on help getting cattle moved in and out of the arena, and they're part of the reason this year's championship show and convention promises to be one of the best yet.

                                                                          ORVTLA

Six-year-old Cassidy Huntzberry of Smithsburg, Md., showed her steer, Tomahawk, in the open steer class at the NETLA show. "She insisted on showing on her own this year, instead of going in the pee wee class," said Cassidy's Mom, Lizz Huntzberry. Cassidy won first in her class of four entries, and she is shown here competing for champion steer in the open division. The steer at right is Braxton, shown by Jimmy Shifflet of Frederick, Maryland.
The Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association staged its 17the annual show in Wooster, Ohio, July 19 under the careful planning of Pres. Tim Mills of Perryville, Ohio. Spectator attendance was considered the biggest in the show's history.

Registered Texas Longhorn cattle sparred for championship awards with 56 ITLA-approved classes including three cross-bred classes, "pee wee" classes for youngsters, youth halter and open halter. In contrast to other breed shows, ITLA shows are also popular for their non-halter classes, in which cow/calf pairs, exhibition steers and all ages of registered cattle are shown freely in the arena.

Each animal is judged casually in the arena, and judging evaluation takes into consideration poise, disposition, mothering ability, travel and all other points of purity and conformation.

Contestants came mostly from Ohio, but also from Indiana and Kentucky. Judge for the show was June Cohron, DVM, of Stuarts Draft, Virginia.

To be a part of Ohio's fast growing family of Texas Longhorn producers, contact secretary Martha Sherer at 419-756-8369, or visit at shererwood@centurylink.net.

Kudos for Autobahn Youth Scholarship Tour

ITLA Vice-Pres. Gary Don Taylor sent us a rundown on the Autobahn Youth Scholarship Tour, held in Fort Worth, Tex., June 11-15.

"It was a terrific family event," said Gary Don. "Showing cattle was fun, and the four-day youth event was packed with activities in and out of the show arena. With the help of Larry Barker, Autobahn general manager, John and Diann Chase have created an extraordinary event for kids to earn scholarship money for college. John is the owner of Autobahn Motorcar Group, and the Chases believe every child should have the opportunity to attend college. The Autobahn is their contribution to that end.

"Kids compete for $350,000 in scholarship money and everyone earns money, even if they don't place at the top."

Gary Don said at the Autobahn children learn about competition and leadership in many ways. Participants improve their public speaking and writing skills through the speech and essay contests. They learn more about cattle by participating in the cattle-judging contest, and they can showcase their creativity through art and ag mechanics competitions.

"The Taylor kids participated in nearly every event," Gary Don said. "It was our first year participating and we thoroughly enjoyed it. This year's show set a new record, with just under 500 entries."

For more information on Autobahn contact Larry Barker at 817-988-6110 or LBarker@abahn.com.

ORVTLA Field Day

by Timothy Mills

We are just a few days away from this year's Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association (ORVTLA) Field Day.

This year we are honored to be the guest of Larry Habrun and friend's at Larry's roping arena at Millersburg, Ohio. Larry has done a lot of work to get ready for this special day.

I have waited 60 years for a day like this. When I was a youngster I watched a lot of Westerns on TV. I was always fascinated by the cowboys roping cattle and several times in my lifetime I have tried to rope and failed. Now I watch my Grandson Hunter try to rope a calf and fail too. After Saturday September 20th, I hope those failed roping attempts are in my past.

We will learn where Texas Longhorns fit into the sport of cattle roping and how they are trained.  We will see Larry's cattle working pens and herd of cows he raises ropers with- what makes good roping stock, what doesn't.  We will learn about the sport of roping and even get a chance to learn how to throw a rope (no horse needed) from guys that do it several times a week and get to take some great action shot pictures too.

Recycling a Texas Longhorn
Old Farm Equipment And Scrap Metal Turned Into Stunning Sculptures

South Dakotan sculptor John Lopez creates life-sized scrap metal sculptures with a uniquely Western American twist. In his hands, old discarded farm equipment is recycled into sculptures of iconic creatures from the American West like a bison, a horse plowing a field, or a Texas Longhorn.

Lopez already had a career as a bronze sculptor, but after creating a family grave for his deceased aunt using scrap metal, he began creating recycled metal sculptures out of found or donated pieces of metal as well.

"My favorite part about these pieces is the texture," explains Lopez. "I just start grabbin' stuff from the pile and welding it, in and if you weld enough of the same thing on over and over it creates this really cool texture that I've never seen in these kinds of pieces before. And I think that's what draws people in."

Chewing the Cud

The only thing Red loved almost as much as Longhorns was fishing.  And at the ripe old age of 86 years old, he still loved going fishing nearly every day. One day e was sitting in his boat when he heard a voice out of nowhere say,

"Pick me up!"

He looked around and did not see any one. He thought maybe he had spent too much time in the sun, or he was day dreaming...until he heard the voice again.

"Pick me up." The old man looked in the water and there, floating on a lily pad was a frog.

The man looked around quickly and then looked back at the frog and said, "Are you talking to me?"

The frog replied, "Yes, I'm talking to you. Pick me up. Then, kiss me and I'll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. I'll make sure that all your friends are envious and jealous because you will have me as your bride."

The man paused for a moment, looked at the frog for a minute in confusion and then reached over, picked it up carefully and placed it in his front pocket.

The frog screamed, "What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I said?? I said kiss me and I will be your beautiful bride!"

He opened his pocket, looked at the frog and said,

"Nah, at my age I'd rather have a talking frog."
