Longhorn Sighting:
Fort Worth's National Day of the American Cowboy.

Just a couple weekends ago, a herd of Texas Longhorns, a cow chip throwing contest and cowboy karaoke attracted some 12,000 people to Fort Worth's National Day of the American Cowboy. And no cowboy would be complete without a Texas Longhorn!

They're putting the "International" in our Texas Longhorn Association
Gary Don Taylor
Gary Don Taylor
Vice President ITLA
by Gary Don Taylor

Join me in giving a big shout out to the Canadian Texas Longhorn Association (CTLA), another ITLA affiliate. This is ITLA's first International Dual Affiliate in Canada. Mark Stewart, who serves on our board directors for region 1 (Canada and other Countries) is doing a great job working with Gordon Musgrove, president of the CTLA.  He is bringing Longhorn enthusiast from all over Canada together for the Westerner Days Celebration in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. What a great time it was and a huge attraction for people visiting the big fair. It was a privilege to be asked to judge their cattle. Our Canadian friends from the North know how to raise quality Longhorns and put on a top-notch show for their members.

Let me also add to that shout out, John and Jan Bastardi. They are wonderful people and great breeders from down under. John and Jan are breeders from Austria. John serves as the Texas Longhorns Australia (TLA) President and his wife Jan helps in every way, from cooking for members at their membership meetings to whatever capacity where help is needed. John worked beside me in Canada while I evaluated the cattle. Check them out on their web site; www.texaslonghornsaustralia.com and like them on Facebook.

Gary Don Taylor, ITLA Vice President; Gordon Musgrove, CTLA President; and John Bastardi, TLA President.
It was awesome to listen to John share how they began their herds. Daryl Dickinson, Dickinson Cattle Company, has been one of their primary sources for semen used to grow and develop their herds. They are six generations deep now by using outside sources like Dickinson Cattle Co. and Semkin Longhorns of Oklahoma, among others, to advance their breeding program.

Success stories like the CTLA and TLA are great to hear and also experience in person.

Success is best achieved when we work together for the betterment of the breed we all love and admire.

Let's keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing all of you this fall at our Championship Show in Oklahoma City.

MIDWEST AFFILIATE HOLDS SUMMER COOKOUT (MTLA)
submitted by Steve Paloncy
MTLA logo_Midwest Texas Longhorn Association
About 30 members and friends of the MTLA gathered at the home of Steve & Judi Paloncy on Sunday for their recent meeting. Chickens roasted on the spit for 4 hours as people came, got reacquainted and uncovered dishes they brought to complete the feast. Usual business included a review of the Summer ITLA qualifying show and planning for 2015.

Dr. Bret Marsh, DVM and State Veterinarian
With all the changing laws at the Federal and State level, President Steve Paloncy invited Dr. Bret Marsh, DVM and State Veterinarian to "de-mystify" the current inter and intra state travel documents required along with what must be done to comply with animal identification laws. Attending with him was Dr. Craig Bowen the district Representative from the Board of Animal Health. Dr. Marsh overviewed the background rationale, new federal laws and what Indiana was doing to comply. He also displayed tags which are acceptable and talked a little about the advantages of each. He fielded many questions, provided samples and brochures and encouraged members to refer any future questions to his office as they arise.

After the lunch, presentation and meeting in the 1870's barn, members toured the grounds of the ranch and of course got a change to talk cattle, leaning on the gate to the Longhorn pasture.

Informal and formal talk confirmed the importance of the MTLA to Longhorn breeders in the state and how much our affiliate has grown in the past few years. Museums, youth organizations and now the State Board of Animal Health know and respect the active members of the MTLA.

'Longhorn drive' helps celebrate beloved West
By Dave Bergmeier of the High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal

A re-created Longhorn drive Aug. 2 brought the past to the present in Dodge City, Kansas, in events that featured television stars Buck Taylor, Johnny Crawford, John Lehr and Nancy Hower. (Photo by Dave Bergmeier.)
A re-creation of the late 1800s-a Longhorn steer cattle drive-and actors who helped make the heartland shine in Hollywood were all part of activities in a southwest Kansas community Aug. 2-3.

A re-created Longhorn drive Aug. 2 brought the past to the present in Dodge City, Kansas, in events that featured television stars Buck Taylor, Johnny Crawford, John Lehr and Nancy Hower. (Photo by Dave Bergmeier.)
Dodge City is known for its Western history and draws people from across the country for 10 days during Dodge City Days. A new event included a Longhorn cattle drive to allow people to visualize what people who lived in a cowtown might have witnessed in the late 19th century. From 1875 to 1886, more than 5 million cattle were driven from Texas to Kansas. Longhorns, prominently raised in Texas, became the symbols of those drives.

Ryan Deutsch, president of the Wild West Heritage Foundation, Dodge City, Kansas, and an employee of the Boot Hill Casino and Resort, smiled as he watched the large crowd gather before the Aug. 2 Longhorn drive. He also rode a horse to help guide the Longhorns on a path from Boot Hill Museum and along Wyatt Earp Boulevard before heading southward to the Dodge City Roundup Arena grounds, home to one of the heartland's largest Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned events.

Wes Sander, a family partner with the Chain Ranch near Woodward, Oklahoma, brought the Longhorn steers to the drive, which included Western television stars Buck Taylor and Johnny Crawford and new stars John Lehr and Nancy Hower to participate in the festivities.

"In January we talked through a lot of ideas and big dreams," Deutsch said. "Now today, it is 70 degrees (Fahrenheit) and I have 30 Longhorns in front of me."

Helping and participating with the project represents Americana to him as Deutsch grew up in central Kansas and appreciated the values associated with the heartland.

Sander's Longhorns have been well known for a number of years for participating in parades and other events. The cattle are older, in some cases "teenagers," and steers weigh up to 1,600 pounds, although typically they range from 1,200 to 1,400 pounds. Organizers reported that 59 Longhorns were brought to Dodge City for the activities to commemorate the 59th year since the debut of Gunsmoke. ORVTLA 17th Annual Texas Longhorn Show

logo_ORVTLA.JPG Wooster, OH -- The 17th Annual Texas Longhorn show was staged at the Wayne County Fairgrounds at Wooster, OH, July 19 under the careful planning of President Tim Mills of Perryville, OH.

Registered Texas Longhorn cattle sparred for championship awards with 56 International Texas Longhorn Association approved classes offered including 3 cross-bred classes. Contestants came mostly from Ohio, but also several from Indiana and Kentucky.

Judge for the show was ITLA approved training judge, June Cohron DVM, of Stuarts Draft, VA.
Tempters Trophy won Grand Champion Female at the 17th annual Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association show

Unique classes included early starters "Pee Wee" classes, Youth Halter, Open Halter and Non Halter. Unlike other breeds, ITLA shows are popular for the Non Halter classes where cow/calf pairs, exhibition steers and all ages of registered cattle show freely in the show arena. Unlike traditional shows where cattle are clipped, trimmed, placement corrected with show sticks and especially fitted, each animal is judged casually in the arena. Judging evaluation takes into consideration poise, disposition, mothering ability, travel, as well as all other points of purity and conformation.

Tempters Trophy won Grand Champion Female at the 17th annual Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Assn show held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. She was raised and exhibited by Dickinson Cattle Co LLC of Barnesville, OH.

Clever Oliver won Grand Champion Steer at the 17th annual Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association show
The crowd in attendance was believed to be the largest of the previous shows. President Tim Mills has already contracted to use the Wayne County Fairgrounds again for the 2015 event.

The All Age Grand Champion Non Halter Female was Tempters Trophy, a 2009 daughter of Tempter exhibited by Dickinson Cattle Co, LLC of Barnesville, OH. The All Age Champion Halter Steer was AA Clever Oliver, a 2009 steer exhibited by Gail Beach of Huntington, IN.

To be a part of Ohio's fast growing family of Texas Longhorn producers those interested are encouraged to join ORVTLA. Contact secretary Martha Sherer, 419 756 8369 or shererwood@centurylink.net.

ORVTLA's 17th Annual One Day Show (cont'd)

logo_ORVTLA.JPG This year by means of personal invites, postings in breed publications, emails, and e-blast, some of the finest cattle in the Texas Longhorn breed came together on July 19th in Wooster Ohio.

Cattle arrived on Friday afternoon for the next day show to be judged by Dr. June Cohron. Friday evening exhibitors came together for a meal provided mainly by Keith Scott and Gretchen Cain (Duck Creek Cattle Co.) After the meal, youth in attendance were presented with custom tee shirts designed to promote Texas Longhorn Cattle and to thank them for their attendance at this year's show.

This year's show offered more classes than in the past with the addition of crossbred classes for cattle with one Longhorn parent.
Gail Beach and her riding steer Oliver presented the colors to open the show as those in attendance sang the National Anthem.
Seems like every current active member was in attendance and ready to go to work as our first year to hold a show at the Wayne County Fair Grounds was under way.

This years Bovine Bingo Steer, donated by The Morris Family (Morris Cattle Co.) was won by Andy and Amber Dunmire, his barn name is now Bingo.  Last time I saw him he was grazing on the lawn at their farm - life's tough for a future trophy steer. Next year's show will be held again at Wooster on the 3rd Saturday in July (mark your calendars). We will be having non-point crossbred steer classes and lead in trail. Almost forgot, the show made front page of Wooster Daily Record newspaper on Monday July 21st and a CD of a collection of show pictures have been mailed out to show exhibitors.

Chewing the Cud...

Old Jimmy had lived a hard cowboy life and his wife was tired of him grousing about his aches and pains. She finally convinced him to go to the doctor.

The doctor gave him a thorough examination and administered a bank of tests.  After getting all of the results back, the doctor caught the wife in the hallway and said, "your husband has a number of things wrong, including a very rare heart condition. I am afraid he's not going to make it, unless you treat him like a king, which means you are to serve at his whim, available 24 hours a day to make sure he doesn't  do anything himself.  You must take care of his every request, no matter how ridiculous it may seem."

Old Jimmy eyed the doctor talking to his wife and as she walked back to him, he asked "what did he say?"

"Well", said his wife somberly, "he said it looks like you probably won't make it."
