How Do You Define Success?
What is the definition of success? Well in this case, 5,000 registrations is the definition. That is the number of free registrations that the ITLA has received from Texas Longhorn Breeders under the ITLA/TLMA free registration program. 5,000 animals have been registered by hundreds of breeders. But it's not just the number 5,000 that has made this program a success. We have saved breeders over $65,000 in registration fees in just 90 days. That is not an insignificant number and it is a tangible measure of the success of what the ITLA is doing.
We had several goals for the free registration program. The broader goal was to do something bold and creative that would have a positive effect on the industry as a whole, something untried to create positive energy in our industry. The other goal was to do something that would have a tangible benefit to every individual breeder. And according to the feedback from the hundreds of breeders that took advantage of this program we hit the nail on the head.
The free registration program is illustrative of the overall philosophy of the ITLA. We are driven by the desire to offer our members tangible, positive benefits and great value for the monies spent with us. We are driven to offer outstanding customer service and earn your business (yes, I said "business"). And finally we are driven to have positive effects on our breed. We want every program we offer, every decision we make and every event we are involved in to have a constructive effect on our breed. We want to help make today a better day than yesterday in the Texas Longhorn industry.
In that vein, both the ITLA and TLMA boards have decided to extend the free registration program for another 60 days through the end of December. If you missed the original deadline you now have a new opportunity to benefit by registering your animals for free. I want to thank the TLMA board again for their vision and support for this program.
Tangible benefits. Positive contributions to our breed. Constructive Leadership. What has your Breed Association done for you lately?
All The Best,
Larry Lonero
President ITLA

An invitation to all Texas Longhorn owners and breeders....
Hi, Folks!
 | Randy Witte of Peyton, CO President, MSTLA |
The National Western Texas Longhorn Show Committee cordially invites all ITLA and TLBAA members and their cattle to participate in the 2014 National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. The Texas Longhorn show will be held Friday and Saturday, January 24-25, in the National Western's Stockyards Arena.
This show is historic in that it represents a joint effort by regional affiliates of both the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America(TLBAA) and the International Texas Longhorn Association(ITLA)-that's the Mountain and Plains Texas Longhorn Association (MPTLA) and the Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association (MSTLA) respectively. Our judge is the well known and respected Lana Hightower, currently a director in TLBAA and an ITLA-certified judge.
We have loose and halter classes as well as youth halter classes. The show will award qualifying points toward the TLBAA World Show and the ITLA National Championship Show. A total of $5,370 in premium money plus trophy buckles will also be awarded to top winners.
Cattle may arrive and off-load on National Western Drive beginning 7 a.m. Wednesday, January 22, and be in place no later than 4 p.m. Thursday, January 23. All animals must have a BVD test and health certificate to be unloaded.

The halter show will begin at 3 p.m. Friday in the covered Stockyards Arena, followed by an enjoyable Tent Party just outside the arena. The party will consist of hors d'oeuvres and bring-your-own beverage, and afford an opportunity for a lot of good folks to get to know one another.
The loose show will begin Saturday at 3 p.m. in the same venue, followed by the annual Mountain and Plains stock show banquet, held at the host hotel, probably beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets to the banquet are $35 per person. The MPTLA invites everyone to this enjoyable dinner, especially members of ITLA and MSTLA.
Cattle may be released beginning Sunday morning, January 26, the last day of Denver's stock show. While your Longhorns are penned in the yards, on display, thousands of stock show visitors will visit the area. You can stick around part of the time and answer questions about your cattle from the spectators who stroll past the pens, and you can also take time to enjoy the rest of the stock show going on.
Our host hotel, Quality Inn Central, 200 W. 48th (I-25 and I-70), is conveniently located only minutes away from the stock show. You can park your trailers in the Quality Inn parking lot or park them in the National Western's lot in downtown Denver. For Quality Inn reservations, phone 303-296-4000 and ask for the Longhorn rate ($80 per night).
TO ENTER ONLINE: www.nationalwestern.com. National Western Stock Show will collect an entry fee of $50 per head entered plus a $10 administrative fee with fee and entry mailed directly to National Western Stock Show, 4655 Humboldt St., Denver, CO 80216-2818. All fees must be paid in United States funds. ENTRY DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 20, 2014.
In addition, Mountain and Plains Texas Longhorn Association will collect a fee of $20 per head entered, which must be mailed, along with a copy of registration papers and entry form, directly to Lana Pearson, P.O. Box 185, Fowler, CO 81039; 719-740-0741. Be sure to include your $35 per person fee for the Saturday banquet. ENTRY DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 20, 2014.
All entered animals must be registered in the name of the exhibitor. Exhibitors must specify if the entry is being shown for ITLA or TLBAA or both. If exhibitor would like to have animal earn points for both national associations, a $5 fee must accompany each entry fee. Copies of registration papers are acceptable. No pending registrations may enter.
There is no limit to the number of individual entries in each class and no limit to the number of premiums paid an individual owner in each class. Cattle cannot show both haltered and non-haltered (loose) in the same age group within a single show. No double entries. Animals will be tagged prior to show.
For additional information: Lana Pearson, 719-740-0741.
Hope to see you in Denver!
Sincerely,
Randy Witte (MSTLA President) and Kenny Richardson (MPTLA President)

Friends, Fellowship, Fun and lots of Texas Longhorn
Submitted by Timothy Mills
There's always a few things that are a sure sign that early fall has arrived in Ohio. The trees are turning all the different colors of the season, you are sure to get caught up in a line of traffic behind a school bus, Friday nights bring people out for a high school football game. In Columbus, the All American Quarter Horse Congress is going on, Saturdays are for Ohio State football, and the first Saturday of October, it's time for Dickinson Cattle Company's Fall Fling.
Texas Longhorn breeders and friends are invited to gather under the guest pavilion around 10:00 a.m. for a day of fellowship and education, learning methods used by D.C.C.I. that increase profits and make life a little easier raising Texas Longhorn Cattle.
 | Corralling and sorting demonstration |
Joel and the ranch hands have the demonstrations set up, Kirk has the audio and video stuff ready to go, Linda and the rest of the Ladies at D.C.C.I. are getting the noon meal ready. The Head to Tail store is open, the guest speaker has arrived, Darol is greeting guests and getting ready to share this year's message, and the Dickinson grand kids are ready for somebody new to play with today.
After the drive to the ranch and your morning cup of coffee, you're headed for the two modern day outhouses set up by the pavilion, the first thing you notice is neither is marked guys or gals. This can get pretty entertaining as you watch people try to figure this one out, doesn't matter, both are the same. Guy, just put the seat up and back down when you're done.
This year's program included Darol's presentation on marketing, utility or perceived values and narrated bus ranch tours. The sire barn was full of some of the best Texas Longhorn bulls the breed has ever seen to date: Drag Iron, Clear Win, Overkill, and many more.
In one of the cow/calf pastures there was a demonstration on bringing cows and calves into a corral system, which is used at the ranch to sort cattle. There was also a branding demonstration for new people, who could bring their own cattle and learn how. Some of this year's calf crop was on display, available for purchase and also for you to evaluate as you get ready to make your semen purchases.
And again, one of their gentlest steers was hanging around for the day for picture taking as a memento of the day.
This year's guest speaker was Gail Beach, from Huntington, Indiana, a life time horse trainer who turned into a Texas Longhorn riding steer trainer shortly after riding her first steer a few years ago. Gail, along with her steer Clever Oliver, shared the process of start to finish on how to train your own riding steer. Oliver allowed guests to go for a ride afterwards.
Another great day at the Dickinson Cattle Company ranch, friends, fellowship, fun, and lots of Texas Longhorn.

Texas Longhorns at the Missouri Farm Fest
Because of my work schedule my time is limited to do all of the Longhorn events. But, a few weeks ago, my work schedule and an event crossed paths, and I had a opportunity to promote Longhorns in Missouri.
The event was the yearly Farm Fest in Springfield MO, and it has been going on for over 30 years. The event group stated that there was between 30-35 thousand people at the three day event. There were over 500 registered animals of all kinds and farm equipment of every level. BUT, we were the only Texas Longhorns there.
People were taking cell phone and camera pictures all weekend. I think I talked to 2000 people. Don't get me wrong, it was great! I learned we are in short supply of ropers in the area. I also learned that even though the sale barns don't like straight Longhorns there is a lot of producers using Longhorn mama cows and crossing them for calves to sell at the sale barns.
To my surprise, I even sold some animals to new customers. I feel that people are looking for Longhorn cattle. As you read this, if you are in a four state area of Missouri, join us and fill a barn of all Texas Longhorns!
I may not be a big producer. But I can tell you I felt big that weekend because of all the positive talk about these Texas Longhorn cattle we so dearly love.

Longhorn Takes the Cover Spot
Our local trade newspaper does a special 20 page flyer each month. They ask if we had a picture they could use for the cover. They told me most of the flyer would be on agriculture for the month of October. They had five interviews with local cattle sale barns.
There was a number of agriculture ads within a 100 mile radius of West Plains. They send out 10,000 copies in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. It was a great opportunity to promote longhorn cattle.

E-Blast Follow-up: They Found a Good Home!
Just wanted to let you know that we found a home for our cow and her six week old flashy heifer calf, who will now be called Special Angel.
After sending out an ITLA E-Blast regarding her life threatening altitude sickness, We were inundated with calls and emails of well wishes and offers to give them a home. Matter of fact we had over 15 different folks spanning five different states. We were simply overwhelmed by the kindness and goodness of the Longhorn Community, and grateful for the swiftness with which it was offered.
Our special thanks go to Dick and Cheryl Curry from Springtown, Texas. Dick was the first one to respond to the email, which he received that morning, and he was already on the road that afternoon to pick them up. Untold hours and cups of coffee later, he would have put on around 1300 miles in two days on his mercy mission to give these cow a new lease on life together. I understand he was a little worn out from the trip, but glad to have been able to give this pair a fine new home on his place. And he has already given several reports that Mother and calf are doing really well now. Thank you again, Dick and Cheryl!
And, none of this could have happened except also for the unbounded kindness of Randy and Marsha Witte of the Red Ink Ranch in Peyton, Colorado. They have been caring for all of their beautiful Longhorns and keeping an eye on our cow since we relocated to Texas from Colorado. It was their ever vigilant and watchful eyes along with a quick diagnosis and love for Longhorns that ultimately gave this pair a chance for more life together. We continue to amass a large debt of gratitude to their faithfulness and generosity. So, thanks too, to the Randy and Marsha Witte from the Trigueiro family! Kevin and Dawn, Ian, Kaden, Austin, Jasmin and Joelyn (Jo-Jo). Below, from left to Right: Dick Curry; Making the transfer in Pueblo, Colorado with Dick Curry with Marsha and Randy Witte; The Longhorns getting settled in for their journey to low altitude.

Chewing the Cud...
A wife was making a simple breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly her husband burst into the kitchen in a panic.
"Careful! Be CAREFUL! You need to put in some more BUTTER! And, you're cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! Turn the OVER, TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter in there or they are going to stick. WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK!
You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? And don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! Right here, right HERE, THE SALT!"
The wife stopped and just stared at him.
"What is the matter with you? You think I don't know how to fry a couple of eggs?"
The husband calmly replied, "I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm driving."
