Around the Campfire, with Roger Hutton
Howdy,
After a cool start to July, it is getting back to normal here in north central Texas....HOT! But, we are about the only area of the state of Texas that has not been officially returned to DROUGHT status. We are praying for rain.
There are three things I want to update you on. First, a couple of weeks ago you were mailed a nomination ballot. The Nominating Committee made its recommendations and brought forth quality and qualified candidates. However, in keeping with the ITLA Bylaws the members are given the opportunity through the nomination ballot to make other nominations. Those ballots are due back in the headquarters office with a postmark by July 15th. Official ballots will be mailed August 7th. I encourage you to vote and be a part of selecting ITLA's new leaders.
Secondly, iRegister, ITLA's new electronic registration program, is now live. I used it over the weekend to both register and transfer animals and I am very pleased with how easy it is to use. I encourage you to start using it. Some of you may have delayed registration/transfer activity waiting for the system to be ready, so now is the time to take care of that activity using www.iregisteritla.com. I hope you enjoy using the iRegister system. Remember if you have any questions just contact Trish or Robin at the office. We would also appreciate getting your feedback.
Lastly, I just want to remind you that we are in full swing with preparation for The Longhorn Extravaganza in Oklahoma City on September 20 and 21. As it was last year, the ITLA Annual Convention and Championship Show are a part of the Extravaganza. We also have added the ITLA Futurity. These events are complimented by the opportunity for you to also participate in the TLMA Horn Championship and Sale. What an outstanding weekend it will be, with events of interest for every Texas Longhorn enthusiast. Make your arrangements now. Hotel blocks are available and we need to receive your registrations and entries as soon as possible. Remember also that your sponsorships will help make the experience even better, so please make a contribution/sponsorship commitment now. You can find details for registration, Show and Futurity entry and Sponsorships on the ITLA web site at www.itla.com. Come be a part of the greatest event in the Texas Longhorn Industry.
Thanks for your involvement in the ITLA.
Best regards,
Roger Hutton

ITLA Marks Passing of Elite Level Steer
Dry Creek Longhorns sadly announces the loss of Gunsmoke, an award winning Texas Longhorn riding steer.
 |
Gunsmoke 02-25-2000 / 07-07-2013 |
Through years of showing, he achieved the highest level of lifetime achievement awards offered by the ITLA.
While a younger steer, he captured the coveted spot of Grand Champion All-Age Steer many times, and often won his class as a Trophy Steer. This gentle steer had acted as an ambassador for the breed through his quiet and patient disposition. Gunsmoke had carried the flags in many show grand entries, and usually was ridden by youth members. Gunsmoke was typically called on for Pee Wee show classes (6 years old and younger) due to his gentle nature. We will miss our steer very much.
We would like to recognize the breeding program of Marge Bashor and the Bashor Longhorn Crest Ranch in Missouri where we obtained this great steer.

ORVTLA: Longhorn Producers Say Lean Times Are Good Times
CROTON, OH -----Texas Longhorn producers gathering for the 15th Annual Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association Show, say the famous breed of cattle has helped them make a profit during confusing political and difficult economic times.
To quote A. J. Bayatpour of WICD, an ABC TV affiliate, "Owners say it's because Texas Longhorns bring in extra money from all kinds of sources. It's not only about meat; breeders sell their cattle for high quality lean beef use, special breeding of top quality stock, polished skulls and for unique enjoyable pasture pets." The sale of polished skulls with the long twisty horns is often $180 to $600 on a Texas Longhorn. That makes a nice extra profit over regular beef breeds.
Longhorn lovers throughout the Midwest will gather Saturday at the Hartford Fairgrounds, Grubb Arena, for a show offering over 40 judged classes. The show starts at 10 AM, July 13 with Canadian ITLA Certified judge Bryan Gilvasy making the hard decisions. (Croton is a beautiful area of Ohio directly north east of Columbus.)

The annual Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Show will be held at Hartford Fairgrounds, Croton, Ohio, on July 13, starting at 10 AM. Bry Dickinson will be competing in the Pee Wee Class and was a serious contender in the 2012 show. Admission free. The public is welcome -- especially children. Photo by June Cohron DVM

Exhibitor Darla Rohy said, "People think because of the size of their horns, they can be mean. But, the truth is, they're a very gentle breed." Longhorn youth shows sponsored by the International Texas Longhorn Assn. are held in 37 different states or locations. The huge annual ITLA Championship Show will be at the Cox arena in downtown Oklahoma City, OK on September 19 to 21.
ORVTLA president Tim Mills of Perrysville, Ohio says, "People are watching what they eat. Cuts of Longhorn beef usually consist of 94 to 97% lean while other generic hamburger is often over 30% fat." Health is a big eating factor and that is the place Longhorns really excel.
Exhibitors are entered from 7 states. The public is invited to attend this colorful show and the admission is free. Enjoy meeting those who own, love and will be competing with their top specimen Texas Longhorns.

Midwest Affiliate Holds Annual Qualifying Show
The Midwest Texas Longhorn Association held its annual show on June 8th in Lawrenceburg Indiana. Members, friends and the public were invited to view some of the best Longhorns in the world at the Dearborn County Fairgrounds. Under the supervision of Show Chair Ed Lewis, club members transformed the Dearborn County Fairgrounds into pens, runways and a show ring complete with holding areas. Food and other vendors who supported the effort along with a huge silent auction table and a special pen for Bovine Bingo let all who attended see just how good a show we had for them.

Larry Lonero from Texas was terrific in his judging of the Pee Wee, Youth, Showmanship, Haltered, Cross Bred and Non-Haltered shows. Assisting him in the judging was Gary Don Taylor from Oklahoma. The only break they got in the day long event was half an hour when the Calf Raffle was held.
| Judges Gary Don Taylor and Larry Lonero make yet another tough decision |
In addition to the normal things you see at a longhorn show, the MTLA provided an opportunity for breeders to show their cross bred cattle. Although not for points, the ranchers got a chance to discuss various strategies for introducing cross breeding into their program as this provides meat producers with the best of all worlds.
Hoosier Longhorns of Washington Indiana generously donated a Respect Me heifer to be raffled off. Proceeds from this Bovine Bingo were used to have the affiliate purchase a "brick" in the wall of the ITLA headquarters. We really wanted to help the organization to pay off the mortgage. Hunt's Respected Sage did not disappoint! After two years of practice doing what cows do best, she placed her mark cleanly in one of the 100 squares on the sold out grid. The winner of the calf was Paul Wagler of Montgomery Indiana.
| Hunt's Respected Sage, the heifer donated by Hoosier Longhorns after making her selection of new owner Paul Wagler from Montgomery Indiana |
During the entire event there was never a time when someone wasn't asking what they could do to help. This spirit of cooperation between all the members really helped make this show a huge success. By volunteering to help no one was over worked and the costs of the show were absorbed. What a great group. We invite any and all longhorn people to attend any of our events or meetings.
Winning Cattle were awarded customized belt buckles, certificates, ribbons and prizes for their efforts

Chewing the Cud...
There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a truly great writer.
When asked to define "great" he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them react viscerally, writhe in emotion, and let them experience true pain, even anger!"
He now writes error messages and manuals for Microsoft Corporation. |

California cattle rancher hopes to help Israel with better breed
A California man is working to get Texas Longhorn cattle to Israel, and he's asking for the public's help to do it.
Robin Rosenblatt looked at Israel's cattle problem first hand and realized the country actually needs a tough breed that can thrive on desert bushes.
According to Rosenblatt, European cattle are too gentle. They are attacked by predators, such as jackals and wolves, but do not fight back and lose as many as one-third of calves, he says.
"They go after the nose of the calf as its being born and just close it with their jaws, and the calf is born dead," the rancher explains. "The cattle don't defend themselves and so they allow this to happen."
That's quite a loss for any rancher, so Rosenblatt has come up with a solution: crossbreed existing cattle with Texas Longhorns, which are tough and will fight predators. His organization is called the Texas Longhorn Project.
"I figure to get started we'll need about $250,000, and after the fifth year we'll need about another $250,000 to get to the amount that we need," he tells OneNewsNow.
"And at that point we won't need any more donations," he says. "The cattle will support the project."
Once Israel is taken care of, Rosenblatt is hopeful to be able to help ranchers in East Africa, which could use the Texas Longhorns to contend with similar difficulties.
