Around the Campfire
Howdy. It always surprises me at how quickly time passes between these opportunities for me to update you about your association. But, I always look forward to sharing this time with you.
Since last time, we have enjoyed Thanksgiving. As I reviewed my list of things for which I am thankful I found all of you there. While I am thankful for the opportunity to lead the ITLA, I am most thankful for you, since you are the only reason for the ITLA's existence.
I want to update you on a few things. First, our new online registration system is progressing well. We have completed the extraction of data from the old system and are now progressing toward a period of testing by our staff. I will soon announce when we will make the system available for your use. In the meantime I have extended the naming contest through the end of December. So, if you want to participate please get your entries into the office. See more details later in this issue.
The ITLA News Bureau, which I appointed at the last Board meeting and is Chaired by Director Randy Witte, has been hard at work developing content for the January issue of the Texas Longhorn Journal. You won't want to miss this, so if you do not receive the Journal, contact the TLMA at 512-556-0302, and arrange for a subscription. Our News Bureau will be providing great materials for the Journal on an ongoing basis and you should make the Journal your publication of choice to insure that you get all of the news on the ITLA and Texas Longhorn Industry.
As I advised you previously, the Board recently approved the first Strategic Plan for the ITLA. An important provision of the plan calls for redesigning our web site to make it a destination for knowledge and information for Texas Longhorn Breeders, as well as a strong commercial site for merchandising that will provide important revenue growth for the ITLA. I am working with a few knowledgeable people to develop the specifications for the site and an RFP that will be the foundation for this initiative. I am very excited about this project as it represents another great step forward for our members.
Well, that is it for this month. I am most thankful for the salvation that I received through the birth of our Lord. In just a few weeks, we will celebrate his birth and so I want to wish you and all those dear to you a very Merry Christmas.
I look forward to updating you next, early in the new year.
Best regards,
Roger Hutton

"Man of the Hour" Award presented to Wes Chancey (left), by ITLA President Roger Hutton (right) |
Chancey Honored by Association
In a ceremony capping the ITLA annual awards presentations at Oklahoma City, association president Roger Hutton presented TLMA chief executive officer Wes Chancey with a special award naming him the Man of the Hour. Although Hutton noted it customary to name a Man of the Year, Wes Chancey, he said, had truly earned the distinction of "Man of the Hour."
CEO Chancey's provided the initiative in organizing the first truly industry-wide event in more than two decades. The Longhorn Extravaganza epitomizes TLMA leadership, under Chancey's direction, in which "everyone, regardless of what registry or association they may be connected with, is made to feel welcome", at a venue where there was always "a lot to see and do." The selection of the facility and the cooperation with TLMA has maximized attendance for all of the events. The inscription on the plaque reads:
WES CHANCEY
Is Recognized as the
MAN OF THE HOUR
For Extraordinary Insight and Leadership
In Seizing the Moment
To Unite the Texas Longhorn Industry
In Common Purpose
"When the need and opportunity converged, Wes was indeed the "Man of the Hour," Hutton concluded. "He was the right man, at the right place, at the right time. The result, which we are now experiencing, the Texas Longhorn Extravaganza, is a watershed event in the history of the preservation and profitable development of the Texas Longhorn breed."
A little over a year ago, the ITLA entered into a cooperative agreement with the Texas Longhorn Marketing Alliance (TLMA). The original vision included planning the success of this joint endeavor event, as well as facilitating the dissemination of industry news generated by ITLA through the pages of the Texas Longhorn Journal, published by the TLMA. The same initiative included special registration fee discounts that have been extended to TLMA members. |

The Drive for Grass-fed Beef
More and more consumers are paying a premium and seeking out beef which is raised exclusively on grass.
"Grass-finished" generally means once the cattle is weaned from mothers' milk, it consumes grass in open pasture for the entire lifespan, rather than getting fattened up on corn in feed lots during its final months.
Demand for grass-fed beef has been growing at a rate of 20 percent a year, according to one study. More stores are starting to offer grass-finished, but retail availability is still limited. Consumers are taking matters into their own hands by buying direct from ranchers.
David Jessup of Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch in Loveland, Colo., says they have doubled production in the past year, without really doing any advertising. This year, they expect to sell 50 direct to the public.
Jessup says people are catching onto health benefits.
"They're calling us and we're sold out two months in advance," he said.
"Probably the biggest and most truthful selling point about grass finished beef is that it is generally leaner," Dr. Dale Woerner, assistant professor with the Center for Meat Safety & Quality at Colorado State University said.
Grass-finished beef has a more favorable ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids and a higher level of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA's), known for fighting cancer and fat. While this has personal health appeal to some, Woerner says there are not major nutritional differences between the two types of beef. He says grass-fed is a niche market and the majority (97 percent) of beef production in this country still comes from conventionally raised cattle.

Going Green - With Texas Longhorns
Submitted by Steve Paloncy
Like most Longhorn owners in the Midwest, we are constantly trying to convince our local 4-H folks that Texas Longhorns are a cattle breed. We send articles, invite them to meetings, beg for inclusion at the county fair, communicate, educate and motivate.....all seemingly to deaf ears. Then out of the blue the phone message was on the recorder: "Becky would like you to bring some Longhorns to our Conservation Days". Are you kidding me??? Of course we'll be there......this is HUGE!
Conservation Day is a gathering of all the 5th graders in the county to learn about what they can do to save the planet. And from my standpoint a chance to convince over 200 kids from rural America that they should have Longhorns. I'd have about 15 minutes, with 20 kids at a time, and after 10 groups the entire county would be begging for cattle. The only problem was where to get enough cows to supply this predicted demand.
Later that night it occurred to me......what the heck are we going to do to make this fit with saving the planet? Googling "CONSERVATION" I found the textbook definition is the "preservation and care of natural and cultural resources". PERFECT...I had a plan.
With very little convincing, I would have these kids eating out of my hand and begging for more........Texas Longhorn Cattle preserve resources, they save the air, the land, money, time, history, tradition, health and even gas & oil! Armed with a few passouts on nutrition value and a picture of a green cow I was good to go. All Judi and I had to do was load the cutest, gentlest heifer we had and be at the fairgrounds ready to go the next morning.
The cow was penned and looking great, the bleachers were full and we were on our way. In 15 minutes I would make a valid argument that a Longhorn in the yard was better and easier than having to maintain the lawn.
A lawn mower costs money, takes time, uses oil and gas, the exhaust poisons the air and still doesn't do the whole job. After a couple of years, you need to replace the mower, have someone haul the old one away and keep working.
With a Longhorn calf that costs about the same as a mower, the grass would be cut 24/7 without them having to do a thing! It doesn't require petroleum products or maintenance. It trims around the buildings, trees and fences, puts back fertilizer and even preserves the history of America's original cattle breed.
When it gets a few years old, it even provides it's replacement. Instead of getting rid of her like an old mower, she'll provide the best tasting, most nutritious cheeseburgers for your entire family to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
After the group screamed they would ALL tell their Dad they NEEDED a Longhorn, I asked if there were any questions. I called on the kid whose hand I saw go up first, the room went quiet and he asked........"why are they called TEXAS Longhorns? we live in Indiana" WHAT??? After all that technical and nutritional data that's the only question you had???? :) |

Indian Territory Texas Longhorn Association Affiliate Report "The Smoke Signal"
submitted by Doris Snyder
Our next ITTLA meeting will be at 11:00 on December 15, 2012, at the Elks Lodge located at 3850 Arlington Road in Ada, Oklahoma. At this meeting we have a nice meal, have 'Dirty Santa' and elect officers for 2013.
Menu:
Sirloin Steak Baked Potato Green Beans Salad Roll Dessert Tea, Coffee or Water
Cash bar is available
We must call in confirmation of the number attending no later than December 1, 2012.
The price of the meal is $17.00 each. Members whose dues are paid in full will receive their meal and one guest meal, or you may purchase your meal or pay your membership at the door. By my calculations - you can save $9 by purchasing a membership and would also be eligible to participate in all ITTLA events and programs. What a deal!
After the meal we will have Dirty Santa for all who wish to participate. If you want to participate you must bring a gift to go under the tree. Then all participants will draw a number and pick a gift as their number comes up ----- or they can take a gift that someone else has gotten and then the person whose gift was stolen can take another gift from the table or steal one from someone else.....
After Dirty Santa we will be electing officers. Please give some serious thought to running for an office or talking to someone who you think would make a good officer or director. We will be electing: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and 2 Directors.
If you wish to attend the meeting please call Doris Snyder at 492-4739 or email her at dbsnyder1995@hotmail.com or Patti Gilbreth at 580-658-3571 or email her at anythingwilldook@yahoo.com with the number that will be in your party. Remember members whose dues are paid get their meal and one guest meal free. Others will need to pay $17.00 per person for themselves and any guests.
Our current president has gotten several things going for ITTLA: a futurity, new this year and the annual sale. However it takes more than the officers to make things happen. We need some young blood and some individuals who want to help ITTLA become bigger and stronger while making new friends.
Folks, so far I have had 7 RSVP - IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND AND PLAN TO EAT WE NEED TO KNOW. We have to confirm the number wishing to attend by December 1, 2012!.
...continued, see "Chewing the Cud" Joke section. |

From Doris Snyder...The ITTLA Affiliate Report...The Smoke Signal...
Two elderly gentlemen from a retirement center were sitting on a bench under a tree when one turns to the other and says 'Slim, I'm 83 years old now and I'm just full of aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?'
Slim says, 'I feel just like a new born baby.'
'Really? Like a new born baby?'
'Yep, no hair, no teeth. and I think I just wet my pants.'

Midwest Texas Longhorn Association Affiliate Report
Submitted by Steve Paloncy
The Midwest Texas Longhorn Association held it's meeting at the Tomato Pie Pizza Joint in Paragon Indiana on November 10th. Hosts Crissy and John Perry of Whisky Hill Longhorns selected the home of the World's Best Pizza as the location in case of bad weather.
Over thirty people attended and enjoyed the beautiful weather talking about Longhorns, Pizza, the Extravaganza and many other topics until the pizza was brought out. Then things got quiet as members enjoyed the meal. A short meeting was held to discuss plans for updating our web presence through use of social networking and also the 2013 show.
President Steve Paloncy asked 2013 Show Chair Ed Lewis for an update. Ed has secured the property in Lawrenceburg, Indiana for June 8th, 2013 and also has a commitment from Larry Lonero to be our judge. As a fund raiser to purchase a brick on the wall of the ITLA headquarters, we will be having a "Bovine Bingo" at the show. Also, we are looking into having a riding steer competition as a part of the show. Volunteers were selected to head the various committees needed to pull off the show.
Steve announced that the Jones family from Hoosier Longhorns has donated a Respect Me daughter as the prize in our bingo game. The plan will be to sell 100 chances on a random grid for $20 each to pay for our square on the wall. At the Longhorn Extravaganza, Respect Me won the competition for longest tip to tip in history so there should be no problem selling out. In fact, sales will be limited to 5 tickets per family so we have lots of participation. Also at the Extravaganza it was announced that donations to the building fund would be matched dollar for dollar. We committed $1000 at the breakfast which will get us our donation for half price, when the grid for bingo is sold out, we will start the show with $1000 in profit!
After discussion about how we can attract more members and get information out faster, it was decided that Crissy Perry and Jesse Buckler would get together and come up with a plan. Each of them has ideas on what we can do and will visit sites of other ITLA affiliates to come up with ideas which will help us. Then we will use the website and also Facebook to help us in the future.
Following the meeting, John Perry gave rides in his antique military transport truck up Whisky Hill to their ranch. Crissy had made desserts and we got a chance to see their new cows and operation. Members stayed late into the afternoon just enjoying the cows, the company and the beautiful weather.
Since January is the next scheduled meeting and the weather has been terrible the last 3 years, Ed Covert offered to host the next meeting indoors at his winery and restaurant. |
