Around the Campfire
Howdy and best Fall wishes. I love the fall season. It is that wonderful time of moderation in weather. It is a relief from the hot summer and the time to get ready for the winter to come. Fall is many things depending on your point of view and frame of reference. So, whatever it means to you is what is important, but please enjoy the season and the things we celebrate at this time of year.
I want to spend my time with you this month updating you on a couple important ITLA event s and initiatives. First, the Convention and Championship Show is coming soon. We have had an unprecedented amount of preparation for this important dual event. As you know, we are holding our Convention and Championship show in Oklahoma City as a part of the Longhorn Extravaganza. So, it has demanded a lot of extra effort to coordinate all of the requirements, since it is more complicated than holding it in Glen Rose as we have for many years. But, the work will be worth it when we see all of you enjoy this spectacular event that is being held along with the TLMA's Horn Championship.
We have a great lineup of seminars for you. Seminar one will have Wes Chancey and myself giving our view of the state of the industry and standing for questions from those attending. Seminar two is a very good seminar on animal health delivered by Bob Kropp, Professor at Oklahoma State University. Seminar three will be Molly Clubb and Jaymie Feldman presenting an overview of the capabilities of our new ITLA online registration/transfer program. We have a larger Convention registration and more Championship Show entries than we have experienced in several years. This, to me, is a good sign that our membership is responding positively to this change. I want to thank everyone who has and is working so hard to make our special event a success, and of course all of you who have registered for the convention and entered your animals in the Championship Show. I also want to thank all of you who have responded with extra financial support thru sponsorships. This is the only way we can execute a successful event. It is not too late and we still need financial support, so if you have not already, please consider helping us with your sponsorship. Please, it is not too late to be a part of this history making event for the ITLA.
Secondly, I want to update you on the new ITLA online registration and transfer program. The project is moving along well. Programming is scheduled to be complete in the next month. Testing will begin thereafter with the expectation that we will introduce the new program early in 2013. Remember that the naming contest is still open, so send in your entries for the name of our new program right away. We will be closing entries following soon after Convention. We are formulating our plan for introducing the program to the members and will begin that promotion process in the fourth quarter. We are excited about this new system on two fronts. First, we are pleased to be able to make online registration and transfer available to our members who have asked for it. We know it will make the process of managing this important part of your Texas Longhorn operation more efficient. Second, it will enhance the efficiency and cost effectiveness of our office operations which will allow our staff to concentrate on improving other services to you, our members. Your first opportunity to get a preview of the capabilities of the system will be at Convention, so come on up to Oklahoma City and get a peek under the hood.
I want to close by thanking all of you who participated in our recent ITLA election. The results will be known soon. The new Directors will be seated at our Board meeting at the Convention in Oklahoma City. I look forward to seeing you there.
Best regards,
Roger Hutton President, ITLA |

Millennium Futurity Steps Up to Next Level with TLMA
The Texas Longhorn Marketing Alliance (TLMA) and the Millennium Futurity announced today that an agreement has been completed to transfer the management and ongoing operations of the Millennium Futurity to the TLMA. This agreement represents the realization that the TLMA's strong promotional resources and organizational ability are needed to continue the exponential growth of the Millennium Futurity.
Ben Gravett, the Manager of the Millennium Futurity, said, "The Futurity has grown to a point that it needs the management and the marketing expertise of the TLMA. This is a big event that requires a lot of effort to produce, and it will benefit from the extensive advertising and promotion that the TLMA can provide. The Partners were enthusiastic about bringing the TLMA to help, and we think this is a huge step forward for the Futurity and the Longhorn industry."
"The TLMA is excited to have the opportunity to work with the Millennium Futurity and the great group of Futurity Partners"' said Wes Chancey, TLMA CEO. "The efforts of people like Ben Gravett, Bill Davidson, Joe Munsch, and many others have made the Futurity the great event that it is. Ultimately, the Partners are the backbone of the event, and it is our intent to keep the Partners actively involved in the decisions to grow the Futurity. We are looking forward to the next Futurity meeting at the upcoming Longhorn Extravaganza."
In 2000, the inaugural event experienced a relatively modest start in Culpeper, Virginia, with only four classes and prize money of $10,000. After 12 years of phenomenal growth, the Millennium Futurity is now conducted at the Somerville Expo Center in Glen Rose, Texas; also home to the International Texas Longhorn Association. The Futurity currently has 58 Partners and the total prize money tops $100,000 each year. The Millennium Futurity Sale has boasted many of the top-selling animals in the Longhorn industry, including Rutledge's Miss Sue 60/4 which sold for $72,000 in 2005, making it the highest selling heifer in the history of the breed.
Joe Munsch, who has helped host the Futurity for many years, shared his thoughts about the announcement. "The Millennium Futurity has been one of the most special and fun events in the industry over the past 12 years. I can speak for myself and all the Partners in thanking Ben and Bill for creating the event and growing it to this point. We are fortunate to have the TLMA ready to take over and grow the Futurity to the next level. 2013 will be an exciting year in the history of the Millennium Futurity!"
"The Millennium Futurity has been a really good thing for the Longhorn industry, and I'm proud to have been involved for a long time," said Futurity Partner Oren O'Dell. "I think Bill Davidson and Ben Gravett have done a wonderful job of creating and running the Futurity, and they have a lot to be proud of. Now the TLMA can bring their marketing experience, their additional manpower, and their advertising capability to help take the Millennium Futurity to a new level. These are resources that we need in this day and age. Bill Davidson, Ben Gravett, and the TLMA working together for the Futurity. That's a pretty strong team." |

Houston Livestock and Rodeo to Host ITLA Event
by Roger Hutton
Showing Texas Longhorn cattle at an ITLA show is always a lot of fun, and with a Texas Longhorn owner as a judge, it is also educational. An ITLA judge not only owns Texas Longhorns, but has attended an ITLA Judging Clinic, and been approved by the ITLA Board of Directors. An ITLA show can help both the knowledgeable and the newcomers in the audience to understand the valuable attributes of the Texas Longhorn.
Therefore, it gives me a great deal of pleasure to announce an International Texas Longhorn Association Show on March 5, 2013 at the Houston Livestock & Rodeo. This show will have ITLA classes, an approved ITLA judge and be shown under ITLA rules.
It will be a lot of fun and I encourage you to attend. Bill Henderson is the Show Chairman. You can reach him at 832-768-0430 for additional information.

Fall Meeting - Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association
The Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association (ORVTLA), affiliate of ITLA, held their fall meeting at the Morris Cattle Co of Walhonding, Ohio. The Morris family had an educational and pleasant day planned for adults and children alike.
Andrew Morris presented a well planned program on corral design, smooth cattle movement and used his kids Cole, Lane and Josie to handle the stock. Abbie Morris charmed the attendees with mid-western cooking and Texas Longhorn vittles.
The meeting was led by ORVTLA President Tim Mills of Perrysville, Ohio. The affiliate has one show annually, fund raisers, a booth at the Ohio Beef Expo and educational field days designed to encourage new producers. Recently directors of ORVTLA voted to sponsor the ITLA Convention in Oklahoma City with a $500 contribution.
Darol Dickinson presented a vernacular interpretation of judge's show reasons. He provided the definitions used with detailed explanations of the real and intended meanings. Most of these phrases are part of the ITLA Judge's Manual.
The Morris' had two tents set-up under some huge Maple trees near the cattle working corrals. This was, for sure, not a city event. It was for people who enjoyed being around Texas Longhorns and the vintage Ohio fall atmosphere. Kids shook a huge apple tree and fed piles of apples to the cattle -- until spotted by Abbie, who was looking forward to several dozen jars of apple sauce later in the fall. Nothing works perfect when ranch kids are added to the equation. |

Long-Horns and Big Antlers...
Texas Longhorn Marketing Association announces cross promotion agreement with Texas Deer Association
The Texas Longhorn Marketing Alliance (TLMA) announced an agreement with the Texas Deer Association (TDA) to work together to mutually promote the Texas Longhorn and Whitetail and Mule Deer industries. The cooperative agreement will create a cross marketing strategy for the two organizations, involving promotion in their respective publications and large events.
"This is a great opportunity to create awareness of the Longhorn breed with the large community of Whitetail Deer breeders across the country," said Wes Chancey, TLMA CEO. "The Texas Deer Association has a large membership across the nation, comprised of deer breeders who are a near-perfect demographic match for the Longhorn industry. We are looking forward to working with the forward-thinking and professional management team of the TDA to create a win-win relationship that benefits both industries."
Karl Kinsel, Executive Director of the TDA, said, "The Texas Deer Association is pleased to announce cross marketing efforts with the Texas Longhorn Marketing Alliance through magazine ads, convention booths and eNews. In Texas, big antlers and long horns get people excited. This combination of legendary Texas Longhorn cattle and majestic Whitetail and Mule Deer would be great additions to any ranch. The added exposure and economic impact that Whitetail and Mule Deer can bring to the agriculture industry can greatly help our rural economy, adding further enjoyment to our country lifestyle."
Breed promotion messages will begin to appear in the upcoming issues of the Texas Longhorn Journal and the Tracks magazines, as well as other association catalogs and programs. The TDA will attend the inaugural Longhorn Extravaganza in Oklahoma City.
The Texas Deer Association was established in 1999 to work toward better conservation, appropriate regulations, and improvement of the overall quality of deer herds in Texas. For more information about the TDA, call (210)767-8300 or visit their website at www.texasdeerassociation.com.
The Texas Longhorn Marketing Alliance was established in 2007, and is dedicated to preserving the dignity and integrity of the Texas Longhorn breed and to promote and market Texas Longhorns to enhance their value and marketability. For more information about the TLMA, call (512)556-0300 or visit their website at www.thelonghornalliance.com.

The Longhorn Code of Honor TM "Embracing Integrity, Honesty and Dignity in the Longhorn Breed"
We, the supporters of the Longhorn Code of Honor, understand that honesty, fairness, and mutual respect are fundamental to the way we treat each other. We will conduct our business in a moral and ethical manner, realizing that the integrity and public image of the Longhorn industry is based on the sum of all professional conduct of the men and women who buy, sell, and breed Longhorn cattle.
- We believe that one of our highest responsibilities is the proper care of our Longhorn cattle.
- We will not misrepresent the sire and dam of any of our Longhorn production.
- We will not misrepresent the date of birth of any of our Longhorn production.
- When we operate a public auction, we will not misrepresent the true buyer of any consignment.
- When we operate a public auction, we will not misrepresent the actual sales price of any consignment.
- We will treat everyone with respect and conduct our business in an honest manner.
No quality or trait is more important than integrity. An ethical person inspires trust. Without trust, we cannot build and maintain our industry or support our associations. By following this simple Longhorn code, we will continue to thrive as independent breeders, strengthen our associations, and maintain the highest level of credibility. We encourage all breeders of the Longhorn industry to embrace the Longhorn Code of Honor and commit to these basic values.

Chewin' the Cud |
The ol' cowboy lay sprawled across three entire seats in the posh New York theatre, it was clear he wasn't "from around there"...
When the usher came by and noticed him, he whispered to the cowboy, "Sorry, sir, but you're only allowed one seat." The cowboy groaned but didn't budge. The usher became more impatient. "Sir, if you don't get up from there, I'm going to have to call the manager." The cowboy just groaned gruffly.
The usher marched briskly back up the aisle. In a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the cowboy, but with no success. Finally, they summoned the police. The cop surveyed the situation briefly then asked, "Alright, buddy, what's your name?"
"Sam," the cowboy moaned. "Where ya from, Sam?" With pain in his voice Sam finally replied.... "The balcony." |
