Around the Campfire
Hello everyone. Well, summer is coming to an end with a big hot puff here in North Texas. But, we know it will be short and that cooler temperatures and hopefully some rain will follow close behind.
I want to spend my time with you this month talking about a couple of things.
First, I want to ask for your help with sponsoring our Convention and Championship Show in Oklahoma City. I am sure you know that no industry event, measurement event, show, or convention, can be successfully executed on only the registrations and entry fees. Every industry event depends on sponsorship money to cover the cost of the event.
We have planned a really quality event that promises to be a wonderful experience for everyone who participates. The ITLA has a chance to really show our best for the Texas Longhorn Industry. Please help us accomplish this through your generous sponsorship.
Secondly, I want to personally ask for your support of the bylaw changes the Board has put before you in the current election. Over the past couple of months, we have provided you with information supporting the changes in the bylaws that are required in order to affect needed changes in the size of our Board and the alignment of the geographic boundaries for Board regions.
The realignment the Board has proposed is overdue and badly needed. The changes have been carefully considered by your elected representatives and are worthy of your support. The new approach will provide YOU more and better choices in Board candidates, improved efficiency in the operation of the Board, improvement in the quality of elected Directors, and overall better representation.
Your ballots will be arriving this week. I again, personally ask you to vote to APPROVE the recommended changes to our ITLA Bylaws. Thank you for your support.
Best regards,
Roger Hutton President, ITLA |

The Members Voice... |
Believe in Your 80%
Roger Hutton, the ITLA President, wrote in the ITLA membership directory, "It is the cattle at the lower half of the quality range that are difficult to sell at a profit." He went on to explain that the top 20% of our cattle with the longest horns are getting better prices. After reading his article, I realized that I am in that 80% category. Keep in mind that I have a registered herd and I do save and register heifers to upgrade the herd. As with these Longhorn cattle, I have been tried and refined over the years. I may not have that top 20% cattle but to me beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
My wife and I have been ITLA members since 1991. We have struggled for years on how to show more profit with our Texas Longhorn cattle, for which we have a deep passion. Because we refused to raise any of the other breeds, we felt there had to be something we could do. One of my favorite country music artists, Garth Brooks, sings, "I will never reach my destination if I never try." That song, along with attending field days and seminars hosted by ITLA members, inspired my wife and I to start a new chapter in our ranch history.
I write this article as an 80 percenter that first had to believe in the product I am selling. Living in the
middle of cattle country, I didn't think anyone would buy into this Texas Longhorn idea. To my surprise, I was wrong. With the shortage of beef in the spring of 2011, it looked like a great opportunity to try to find a way to sell our cull calves as ground beef because I couldn't keep them all. I know it sounds terrible to do something like this to the animals we love but not all Texas Longhorns are show animals and not all have 80 inches of horn.
We started by selling locally to people that we knew. They liked the taste of the meat and the fact it was locally grown with no hormones or antibiotics added to it. However, I continued to feel the need to do more. I started searching for a state or USDA inspected processing plant, which was not an easy task. It was nearly impossible to find something close by: the first processing plant we found was 60 minutes away. I chose that USDA inspection plant to allow sales off of our website and also to stores in neighboring states. After having our first steer processed, I started making sale pitches to local stores within a 100 mile radius of our farm. After several months I found two stores that liked my idea and are currently selling our lean Texas Longhorn meat. Setting my goals high, I decided I needed to average two animals per month. To my surprise at the end of 2011, I indeed sold two culls per month either as packaged ground beef or live animals for processing.
I wasn't expecting our new business to grow so rapidly. As a result, the processed animals are only averaging 700 pounds. But, when I took them to the sale barn, the animals would only bring 50 cents per pound and now this 700 pound calf makes an average of 230 pounds of all natural grass fed beef which I sell at $4.00 per pound wholesale. Understand, we are not getting rich. But we are not only selling our homegrown animals, but we are also selling the farm lifestyle that generations of people are forgetting. Some farmers might not realize that a high percentage of the public thinks that beef, chicken, and pork comes from the grocery store- and not the farm.
When you believe in your product, you always look for something new. In March 2012, I had a "light bulb" moment: Longhorn meat and beef snack sticks. So I put the 2 together. I found a processing plant that is 3 hours away which can process, package and put our label on our beef snack sticks. I have found that more stores are interested in our snack sticks and that means more time spent on finding new customers. On August 11, my wife and I were invited to one of the stores that sells our meat. That was our first "show." We were not showing one cow. Instead we were showing our entire farm. It was a blue ribbon day. I washed the truck, we set up a display table, and we grilled our beef so costumers could taste how lean and delicious Longhorn meat is. We sold some beef and made new costumers.
Don't get me wrong, I love right where I am at being in the 80% and if I can do this so can you. Any good thing takes hard work, time, and patience. Of course my future goals will be to become part of the top 20% because that is a part of the total Longhorn experience. So how is this whole experience helping the ITLA and the 80%? We have found a niche for the market. The more meat we sell, the more registered cows I will need to purchase. It is a win-win for us and the ITLA. Purchasing more registered cows will give me more opportunity to create a cash cow for one of the future 20% sales.

Larry Smith III, past president of ITLA...was selected by the Kansas State Fair to judge the World Watusi Show. Larry, of Glen Rose, Texas, is an approved ITLA judge and is known for his life long love of Texas Longhorn cattle, yet, on his darker side, has owned full blood or percentage Watusi cattle for a couple dozen years.
Congratulations for being selected to judge one of the largest Watusi shows in the nation. May the horns win in every class. |

ITLA Elects Officers & Regional Directors
At this time each year a replacement slate of leaders are submitted to all ITLA members for consideration. This slate is the culmination of the Nominating Committee's efforts to fill positions with energetic and loyal ITLA members. The committee normally includes past presidents who have worked with members for years.
After the membership receives this slate by mail, they have the opportunity to submit additional candidates, by mail-in petition, who are deemed qualified to be added to the ballot. This year there were no candidates added by the petition process, so the nominees submitted by the committee have been approved by the membership, constituting election, in accordance with the Bylaws.
Hutton and Lonero Chosen to Lead

President Roger Hutton of Argyle, Texas, was asked to serve another term, which was approved. Outgoing Vice President Stan Searle, Monument, Colorado did not wish to serve another year.
Larry Lonero of Brenham, Texas agreed to be placed on the ballot. Larry has served as an ITLA director, is one of the most popular ITLA show judges and has been ITLA Championship Show Chairman the last two years.
Bruch Returns to Board
The At Large #3 Director, John Nelson, Wellington, Colorado has served ITLA for 6 years and was term limited and will step down. This position will be served by Gary Bruch of Strong City, Kansas who was nominated unopposed. Gary served as president of ITLA for two terms and has been a long time Board member. This year's slate includes Charter Member Bruch along with newer entries to the breed.
Witte and Daniell Re-elected
Region #6 Director, Randy Witte of Peyton, Colorado has served one term and was unopposed to serve a second term. Randy is well known as the retired publisher of Western Horseman Magazine, author and avid Texas Longhorn producer. He is in his second term as president of the Mountain States ITLA affiliate. Randy and his wife Marsha have been highly successful in showing Longhorns in the Rocky Mountain States.
Representing Region #9, Lana Daniell has served one term and will serve a second, also unopposed. Lana leadership on the Board of Directors was demonstrated most recently as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee. She is well appreciated for her energy in the West Texas show system.
Steven Bryson
In Region #8, Steven Bryson will join the board and serve the southeast USA, He replaces Bob Mottet, Shreveport, Lousiana, who has served a full term. Bryson is a 32 year old Longhorn enthusiast from Blountsville, Alabama. Steven and his wife, Tracy, have two daughters, Allie and Josie, and one son, Macon. He is in his first year of his new role as Assistant Principal at J.B. Pennington High School where he was promoted after serving nine years as a teacher and coach. Steven received a Bachelors degree from Cumberland College in Williamsburg, KY, pursued additional coursework at Jacksonville State University, and recently acquired a Masters degree in Instructional Leadership from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Bryson family attends Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church where Steven serves as a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent.
Steven became involved with registered Texas Longhorns and ITLA in 2002 when he purchased one bull and one heifer and added 4 more females the following year. From those 5 females he began building a very respectable herd. His breeding focus has been centered on hip and horn and most recently horn shape.
While Steven, like most other Longhorn breeders is striving to raise animals with record horn, he realizes that not every Longhorn will break records, but all will taste good. He wants to breed Longhorns that people with a beef cattle background, like himself, would be proud of, while possessing the "wow factor" that Longhorn breeders desire. He maintains a website which helps generate most of his sales. He comments that he is amazed by how helpful Longhorn breeders are to each other whether it is for advice or even to help transport purchases across the country. Steven says that he feels honored to be chosen as a Director and that he will work diligently to ensure that ITLA meets the needs of its members, promoting the Texas Longhorn breed while maintaining nominal fees.
Gary Don Taylor
In a word, builder. That's the first thought which comes to mind when family and friends think about Gary Don Taylor. In 1987, at the age of 26, Gary and his brother strapped on tool belts and built a business for themselves. Taylor Bros. Construction, Inc. continues today with Gary and his son Ryan at the helm.
Gary jokes that his Mother had a drug problem. Every time the church doors were open, Mom drug the family to church. By the time he was 12 years old, Gary knew that one day he would answer his call to preach. In 1998, Gary moved his family to Kingfisher, OK where he built a new local church. He pastored the church until 2010.
Now at an age that he can slow down, Gary is fully committed to building something very different...a top-notch herd of Texas Longhorn Cattle. Gary's family wasn't consulted about getting into Longhorn ranching. One day, his wife and family came home to see 11 colorful, horned cattle in the pasture. Today, everyone on the ranch is committed to furthering the industry by producing cattle with exceptional confirmation, color and horn.
Gary's Christian faith provides a path for living to his children and grandchildren. He is a graduate of Oklahoma City Christian School where in 1978 he graduated with the honor of Valedictorian. He went straight to work, first in the bustling oil fields of Oklahoma and later his entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own company.
Gary and his family attend Surry Hills Baptist Church. He has two children and one grandchild in the house. All three are readying their show sticks. They are all future cattle showmen. Gary's son Ryan and his wife Jennifer also live on the ranch. Their newborn baby, Emmalee is another future cattle showman. Nearly every night Gary and the kids set out to look over the herd and take pictures.
The newly elected and re-elected officers and directors of the International Texas Longhorn Association will be formally installed at the annual membership meeting in Oklahoma City on Saturday October 27. |
