Around the Campfire
Howdy, ITLA. Here we are in the middle of the second quarter and I hope your May is off to a good start.
As I have driven around North Texas this week it is a beautiful sight to see pastures full of round bales. We are so blessed to have had good winter moisture to feed this early cutting. I pray that you are equally blessed up your branch of the creek.
One of the things I think we should be proud of at the ITLA is the standard by which we judge our cattle, the certification process we use to develop good judges, and the quality of the judges that come out if that process. We have followed a good process for many years, but like everything an occasional overhaul can produce improvement. Recently I asked Debbie Goodrich, Chair of our Show Rules Committee to evaluate the process and bring improvements forward to the Board. Debbie led an evaluation by her committee along with input from Lizz Huntzberry, Vice President Searle and Darol Dickinson. The Board unanimously approved recommendations to improve the show judge certification process which will further insure that the show judges certified by ITLA are of the highest quality. I thank everyone who contributed to this process for doing a great job. Debbie, thanks to you for your leadership.
As breeders we breed Texas Longhorn cattle for a wide range of reasons. I appreciate the interest of all breeders. The folks who are breeding for correct breed qualities and get joy from showing their cattle are one segment of our diverse breeder organization. A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of judging the youth show at the Chisholm Trail Texas Longhorn Affiliate double point show held in McKinney, Texas. What a hoot! It was so good to see the young folks working hard and taking pride in showing their animals. It was great to spend time with some of our members and see their excitement about our 2012 Convention and Championship Show that will be held as part of the Longhorn Extravaganza in Oklahoma City in October. It was also good to receive thanks from many for the progressive course we are on at ITLA. It made me proud to be serving them and all of you.
We are working now to finalize the schedule of events for the Texas Longhorn Extravaganza. We will be publishing the program details soon. Look for them starting in the June issue of the e-Drover and the Texas Longhorn Journal (TLJ). I encourage you to take advantage of the great hotel rates and book your rooms before the block runs out. You do not want to miss this historic event. Hotel contact information is on the ITLA web site.
If you have questions or suggestions about the Convention or Championship Show please contact the office or Convention and Show Chairs listed below: Trish David, Office Manager, 254-898-0157 Robyn Lonero, Convention Chair, 979-679-9405 Larry Lonero, Championship Show Chair, 979-525-1667
I want to renew my invitation from last month for you to write an article for the TLJ sharing your Texas Longhorn experiences, knowledge and perspectives. It only needs to be about the length of this message. I know many if you can do it. Please share with all of us.
Well, thanks for being a part of the ITLA, the member focused Texas Longhorn association. Serving you is our only reason for existing.
Warm Regards,
Roger Hutton President, ITLA |

2012 Longhorn Ranch Sale & Social, Yamhill, Oregon
(Sale report and pictures submitted by Daniel Fey)
About 85 people from Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia attended the 2012 Longhorn Ranch Sale and Social at the Fey Ranch in Yamhill, Oregon on April 14th. It turned out to be a fun day with sunny skies, good food (Longhorn Chili), an educational seminar about "Breeding For The Complete Package" and vendors presenting artwork and livestock equipment. Last but not least sale attendees enjoyed a silent auction in a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of time to take a close look at the sale cattle and to get to know other Longhorns folks.
The sale resulted in a total volume of over $40,000 with 23 heifers and cows changing hands. Several new breeders took some good breeding stock home.
A 2010 JP Rio Grande granddaughter "Casino's Ace" (Fey's Rio Casino x Demanding Woman) was the high seller and was purchased for $9,000 by Alexandra Dees, CR Ranches in Harper, OR. The sale average was $1,744.

CTTLA News - ITLA Affiliate - Chisholm Trail Texas Longhorn Association
I just wanted to start out by saying a BIG thank you to everyone that made our Spring Show in McKinney, TX on April 21st and 22nd a HUGE success! We had over 200 entries in our open shows and 46 entries in our youth show. I'm just tickled on how many people stepped up and volunteered in every area! Without all of you, the show wouldn't have big as grand as it ended up being!
On Sunday April 22nd, the CTTLA had a general board meeting and we swore in the new officers:
President: Danielle Andrews
Vice President: Carol Obermeier
Secretary/Treasurer: Deborah Deatherage
We expect great things for the upcoming year! We also voted to hold our 2013 Spring Fling back in McKinney, TX.
If you missed out on the Spring Fling, we encourage everyone to join us on June 23rd at the S Lazy R Ranch in Chalk Mountain, TX for a one day haltered and youth show. This show is casual attire, no bathing, no show halters, just come as you are. We also have youth Olympics being held during the day, and trust me; you don't want to miss it! We will be grilling burgers also.
We also have a Jackpot show on September 15th at the Rocky Oaks Ranch in Cross Plains, TX. Instead of awards, you get money! This also will be a one day haltered and youth show. Come as you are; relax dress and plan on a lot of fun.
I hope to see everyone down the road or at one of our fun-filled events to come!

Statement by USDA Chief Veterinary Officer John Clifford Regarding a Detection of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in the United States
Assures Consumers That Existing Safeguards Protected Food Supply; Reiterates Safety of Consuming Beef Products
WASHINGTON, April 24, 2012 - USDA Chief Veterinary Officer John Clifford today released the following statement on the detection of BSE in the United States:
"As part of our targeted surveillance system, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the nation's fourth case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in a dairy cow from central California. The carcass of the animal is being held under State authority at a rendering facility in California and will be destroyed. It was never presented for slaughter for human consumption, so at no time presented a risk to the food supply or human health. Additionally, milk does not transmit BSE.
"The United States has had longstanding interlocking safeguards to protect human and animal health against BSE. For public health, these measures include the USDA ban on specified risk materials, or SRMs, from the food supply. SRMs are parts of the animal that are most likely to contain the BSE agent if it is present in an animal. USDA also bans all nonambulatory (sometimes called "downer") cattle from entering the human food chain. For animal health, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ban on ruminant material in cattle feed prevents the spread of the disease in the cattle herd.
"Evidence shows that our systems and safeguards to prevent BSE are working, as are similar actions taken by countries around the world. In 2011, there were only 29 worldwide cases of BSE, a dramatic decline and 99% reduction since the peak in 1992 of 37,311 cases. This is directly attributable to the impact and effectiveness of feed bans as a primary control measure for the disease.
"Samples from the animal in question were tested at USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa. Confirmatory results using immunohistochemistry and western blot tests confirmed the animal was positive for atypical BSE, a very rare form of the disease not generally associated with an animal consuming infected feed.
"We are sharing our laboratory results with international animal health reference laboratories in Canada and England, which have official World Animal Health (OIE) reference labs. These labs have extensive experience diagnosing atypical BSE and will review our confirmation of this form of the disease. In addition, we will be conducting a comprehensive epidemiological investigation in conjunction with California animal and public health officials and the FDA.
"BSE is a progressive neurological disease among cattle that is always fatal. It belongs to a family of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Affected animals may display nervousness or aggression, abnormal posture, difficulty in coordination and rising, decreased milk production, or loss of body weight despite continued appetite.
"This detection in no way affects the United States' BSE status as determined by the OIE. The United States has in place all of the elements of a system that OIE has determined ensures that beef and beef products are safe for human consumption: a mammalian feed ban, removal of specified risk materials, and vigorous surveillance. Consequently, this detection should not affect U.S. trade.
"USDA remains confident in the health of the national herd and the safety of beef and dairy products. As the epidemiological investigation progresses, USDA will continue to communicate findings in a timely and transparent manner."

Remembering Richard (Dick) Lake (1922-2012)
Richard (Dick) Lake of Spearfish, SD, formerly of Tuscola, IL, father of Gary Lake of Ellicott, CO passed away on April 4, 2012 just 10 days before his 90th birthday anniversary. He spent most of his life in the construction business in Tuscola and spent his last few weeks in Urbana, IL.
Dick was born April 14, 1922, in Effingham County, IL, the oldest child of Samuel Parks Lake and Delores Woody Lake. He moved with his family to Tuscola at the age of four and graduated from Tuscola High School in 1939 and attended the University of Illinois.
Dick learned to fly as a teenager and enlisted in the US Air Force following Pearl Harbor. He flew over 140 combat missions in the South Pacific during World War II. Dick returned to Tuscola and married his hometown sweetheart, Kay Rubart, in 1950. They had two children, Gary Richard and Jeri Ann. Kay preceded him in death on August 28, 1992.
With his brother, Kern Owen, Dick started Lake Construction and built in the Tuscola area into his seventies. In 1975 Dick became acquainted with Habitat for Humanity while on a mission trip to South Carolina. He led Habitat work crews from the Tuscola area for many years, including adult and youth groups. While on a Habitat build in Americus, GA, Dick met his second wife, Doris Reynolds Vore, of Sundance, WY. They were married in Tuscola, January 7, 1995.
Dick mostly loved to fly, but was an avid Illini fan, a dedicated golfer, and a master wood craftsman. Most of all, Dick loved his family. He is survived by his second wife, Doris; his children Gary Lake (Donna), Ellicott, CO and Jeri Lake (Steve Rayburn), Champaign, IL; his step-children Ted Vore (Dixie), Spearfish, SD, Janet Lund (Jim), Casper, WY, Dan Vore (Mary), Beulah, WY, and Tom Vore (Suzie), New Castle, WY; seven beloved grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law Barb Lake, Tuscola, and Joyce Allen, Bellville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kay, his brother K.O, and one great-granddaughter.
His son Gary, well known in the Texas Longhorn business for many years, visited frequently with his dad in Spearfish during the past year and helped arrange with daughter Jeri and his engineer/nephew Jeff Lake of Steamboat, Colorado a ride home in the right front seat of Jeff's C-206 Once more in the cockpit, Dick Lake's flight to his home state was a fitting last adventure for an old fighter pilot.
_________________________________________________________________________ Prayer for a Pilot Jeri Lake, December 1982 LORD, You made it all so beautiful, the blue and spacious sky.THE TREES stand reaching for it, baby birds can't wait to fly. BUT LORD, some are so awfully tempted, to glide and float on air, WATCH CLOSELY over your sky, that's my Dad you see up there. I KNOW,his plane is just a tiny speck and You have much to do, but I just can't keep track of him, so I am trusting You. AND LORD, When he leaves his earth bound vessel and he charts his final mile, Let him see his way so clearly....That he doesn't have to file |

Chewin' the Cud |
Around a campfire, a group of cowboys were relating stories of close calls they had. Everyone told a tale until they got to the last one.
The last Cowboy looked far off recalling something from long ago and started slowly, "I had a near death experience that has changed me forever. Years ago, when I was much younger, I went riding. Everything was going fine until the horse starts bouncing out of control. I tried with all my might to hang on, but was thrown off. Just when things could not possibly get worse, my foot gets caught in the stirrup. When this happened, I fell head first to the ground. My head continued to bounce harder as the horse did not stop or even slow down..."
He stopped and took a sip of coffee. Everyone was wided eye and waiting. When they couldn't stand it any longer one of them ask,"Well, what happened? How did you get out of that?"
Cowboy looked back and answered, "Just as I was giving up hope and losing consciousness, the Walmart manager came out and unplugged it."
