 Around the Campfire  Roger Hutton

I look back with great thankfulness and appreciation for having been a part of our 22nd annual Convention and Championship Show held in ITLA's headquarters city of Glen Rose, Texas, October 20 - 22. Despite the dismal national economy and the regional drought that ravaged the southwestern United States, we had a memorable experience for all who were able to overcome these challenges and be part of the event.

The highlight of the Convention was the Judging Clinic sponsored and promoted by the Marketing Committee. We owe Joe Assad and Darol Dickinson a big thanks for the tireless job they did of promoting the clinic. As a result of their work the clinic was well attended, attracting breeders from eight states. Special thanks to Darol Dickinson, Lizz Huntzberry and Bill Henderson for instructing at the clinic. I heard nothing but great praise for the individuals and the knowledge they shared.

The Championship Show was also a big success. The judges confirmed repeatedly that the quality of the cattle was very high and very tight in the classes. So, while the numbers were down, the quality was very good. My observation is that everyone participating in the show had a great time.

The Convention is also the time when ITLA presents its highest awards. This year the recipients were Joe Assad, Ed Covert, Darol Dickinson and Kelly Geurin.

The Convention and Championship Show provided not only a time for us to celebrate the accomplishments of 2011, our 22nd year, but to think in terms of the great challenges and opportunities we have in the coming 23rd year of ITLA. Our Association grew in membership by 10 percent in 2011. Continuing that pace will be a challenge in 2012 as we face the continued economic challenges of the country and the follow-on effects of the regional drought.

In an effort to help not only ITLA members but all breeders of Texas Longhorn cattle with these challenges we have initiated a special promotion. From November 1 through December 31 we will be running a very attractive fee schedule for registrations. I invite you to learn the details of this special promotion later in this issue and encourage you to take full advantage of the special rates.

As we move forward into 2012 you will see the ITLA taking aggressive steps to forge relationships with breeders across our industry in an effort to grow the Association and strengthen our financial ability to increase the services to our members. As Henry Ford once said, "If everyone is moving forward together then success takes care of itself."

Thank you for your support in 2011 and I look forward to working with you in 2012 to insure that the ITLA and the Texas Longhorn Industry flourish.

Regards,

Roger Hutton

(Payment of $60 annual dues now will cover the balance of 2011 and all of 2012.)

DUAL REGISTRATIONS* (regular rate $10)

1 - 24 ..............................................$ 8.00

25 - 99 .............................................$ 6.00

10 - 24 ..............................................$10.00

USDA Approves Minnesota's TB-Free Status

Upgrade means fewer requirements for Minnesota cattle producers

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Minnesota Board of Animal Health today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved Minnesota's application for statewide bovine Tuberculosis (TB) Free status, effective October 4, 2011. The approval comes six years after the discovery of an infected beef herd in July 2005.

In recent years, status downgrades have been the cause of increased testing and movement requirements for Minnesota cattle, both in-state and out. With U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approval, the status upgrade will bring relief to most Minnesota cattle producers.

"The farmers in Minnesota have worked tirelessly alongside the Board of Animal Health and the USDA to eliminate this disease quickly," said Minnesota State Veterinarian and Board of Animal Health Executive Director Dr. Bill Hartmann. "We have raised the bar in disease eradication by working together, working quickly, and working effectively. Minnesota is a model of how it should be done."

Though Board of Animal Health requirements will be reduced for most, livestock farmer should call the state of destination prior to interstate movement of animals. Other states may require additional testing, permits, or official identification of livestock.

"With this victory comes the responsibility of the Board to ensure our state remains free of the disease. To provide extra assurance that TB is eliminated, surveillance will continue in cattle herds in the Management Zone," said Hartmann.

Producers in the former Modified Accredited Advanced (MAA) Zone will no longer be required to obtain permits or test individual animals prior to moving cattle. An additional whole-herd test will be required of former MAA Zone herds. Producers in the smaller Management Zone will continue slightly modified testing and movement requirements.

Thank you for sharing the Longhorn adventure with us!  It's the season of Thanksgiving and being thankful.  Sure, there have been some tough times, but there's lots to be grateful for.

We find what we are looking for: A vulture and hummingbird can both fly over the desert, and the vulture will find the dead bodies, while the hummingbird will find the flowers with nectar.  Have you had some dark clouds come through this year?  Sounds like you might be ready for a bumper crop of silver linings!

Take time around the table this month to practice being grateful. Show the friends, family or children around you what a grateful heart looks like.

If you are not thankful for what you have, you will never be thankful for what you don't have.
Happy Thanksgiving!
