 Around the Campfire  Roger Hutton

...with Roger Hutton, ITLA President

The message I want to share with you this month is one of encouragement. A significant part of any leader's role is to be a cheerleader; to be encouraging; to be positive and provide hope of things improving.

I understand how you can be in a funk after the summer we have just lived through. All Texas Longhorn breeders across the country have been affected by the miserable economy of our country...some, more severely than others. In addition, many of you have suffered through unusually difficult acts of nature...destructive storms, flooding, drought and devastating fires. It is understandable that these things can cause you to feel overwhelmed and hopeless, and therefore, to retreat and withdraw from seeking the joyous aspects of life.

One of the most enjoyable parts of life - one from which we can draw the most healing is fellowship with our family...including our Texas Longhorn family. In less than two months, on October 20th through 22nd, the ITLA family will come together in a reunion at our 2011 Convention and Championship Show in Glen Rose, Texas. This is our opportunity to share time with friends, and seek healing from one another's fellowship and support. It will be a time for us to enjoy our beautiful animals, but more importantly, to enjoy and celebrate our blessings with our fellow Texas Longhorn breeders.

We have been planning for the Convention and Show for several months and will be presenting you the opportunity to have a superior experience doing what we all love to do, showing our cattle and enjoying our friends who share our interest in Texas Longhorn cattle. There is no better way for you to receive encouragement than from your friends; no better way to be encouraged than to encourage. So let me encourage you to act now and take the first step by getting your Convention registration and Show entry forms completed and mailed into the ITLA office. You can find the forms attached to this issue and you can also access them on the ITLA web site.

I am looking forward to seeing you in Glen Rose, and the opportunity to encourage you to look to our bright future. I pray for God's blessings on you and yours.

Regards,

Roger Hutton

2011 ITLA NOMINATIONS

Please refer to the Bylaws for any questions related to nominations. http://www.itla.net/ITLA_Information/index.cfm?con=bylaws

MEET THE NOMINEES

Shadow Seaman, Nominee for Vice President

Shadow SeamanI am Shadow Seaman and the membership has nominated me for ITLA Vice-President. I am 100 percent ITLA and do not have the distractions of being intimately involved with any other organizations. I believe strongly in the values and principles of the ITLA and have worked to protect and promote them. While I believe that any of our members can be members of many organizations; it is my opinion that the leadership of the ITLA needs to be 100 percent ITLA to assure the purity of our decisions and motives without the appearance of conflict of interest. I would encourage you to consider these ideas when voting for all ITLA Officers and Directors.

Bonnie and I started raising Longhorn Cattle in 1999 and run 30 to 40 head. We joined the ITLA in 2001. I have been Director At Large #5 for 5 years and Chairman of the Affiliates Committee for 4 years. I have made myself available for any issues that any of the Affiliates have been experiencing and have done anything possible to assist them. I also work to support the ITLA office in Affiliate questions, needs, compliance, and membership. I have been President of the Top of the West Texas Longhorn Association for 11 years and have been host/chairman of 9 ITLA Qualifying Regional Shows. I became an ITLA Qualified Longhorn Judge in January 2008 and have judged many shows across the nation including the Championship Show in Texas. I have served as Show Announcer or Co-Announcer for the Championship Show many times. I have a special interest in the ITLA youth members as they are our future.

Please vote so your voices are represented by strong leadership that will be accessible and responsive to your concerns and needs. Thank you and please contact me with any questions: Shadow Seaman, Victory Ranch Longhorns, VictoryRanch@earthlink.net 208-420-2484

MEET THE NOMINEES

Debby Goodrich, Nominee for At Large #5

Debby GoodrichMy husband and I run a small ranch west of Fort Worth that we acquired in 1991.   I have been an active member of ITLA since 1992, shortly after we bought our first longhorns. I have served as Treasurer of Metroplex Texas Longhorn Association and as President for two years, during which time I was in charge of putting on three ITLA accredited shows. I am currently serving as Secretary/Treasurer of MTLA. About four years ago I attended an ITLA judging clinic and a few months later became an accredited ITLA judge. Since then I have judged shows across the country, including the Championship Youth Show in the fall of 2010.

I have also been an active member of my church, having been in charge of two main fundraising events this year as well as assisting with past fundraising events. Recently, I retired from a 35 year career in education having served in various capacities including teacher, counselor and educational diagnostian.

My goal is to serve the needs of the membership of ITLA with equity and encourage services that will assist all longhorn breeders to better understand, enjoy and prosper from their cattle.

I am proud of my 19 years of devotion and service to the ITLA, and with your help I would enjoy serving on an International level.

Darol Dickinson Addresses R-CALF

Dickinson is a past ITLA President and strong advocate for Texas Longhorn lean beef.

Darol DickinsonBillings, Mont. - Arriving from over 20 states, nearly 200 U.S. cattle-producing members of R-CALF USA participated in the organization's two-day, 12th Annual Convention, held August 25-27 in Rapid City, South Dakota. Along with catching up on old acquaintances, members discussed the most critical issues affecting their livelihoods, rural communities and industry. Numerous new member-policies to direct the advocacy operations of R-CALF USA were expounded and approved.

Special presentations at the convention included a session on State Sovereignty: The Original Concept by historian Steven Pratt; a session on Marketing Retail Beef in Hostile Times by R-CALF USA Director Darol Dickinson, who operates a Texas Longhorn retail beef business at Dickinson Cattle Co Inc., Barnesville, Ohio; an estate planning session on When the legacy is Land by Rapid City, S.D. R-CALF USA member and certified financial planner Don Hausle; and a tribute to former R-CALF USA Director, the late Johnny Smith, of Fort Pierre, S.D., delivered by Willie Cowan of Ft Pierre Livestock Auction, Ft. Pierre, S.D.

The convention also included in-depth panel discussions on international trade, animal identification, cattle marketing, food safety, COOL, animal health, and the Beef Checkoff Program, each of which was led by the chairs or members of the respective R-CALF USA working committees.

R-CALF USA President George Chambers said there is an easy way to describe a convention filled with hard-working, serious cattle producers like he has in his organization. "It's a convention of like-minded, determined people who are extraordinarily talented and seriously determined to chart a new and more promising course for the U.S. cattle industry."

EPA Declares Hay a Pollutant in Effort to Antagonize Small and Mid-Sized U.S. Cattle Feeders

September 1, 2011 Billings, Mont. - During his presentation on the status of the nation's new country-of-origin labeling (COOL) law, and on behalf of the R-CALF USA COOL Committee, R-CALF USA member and Kansas cattle feeder Mike Callicrate was asked a non-COOL question that set convention goers on their heels during the 12th Annual R-CALF USA Convention held August 26-27 in Rapid City, S.D.

"Has the Environmental Protection Agency declared hay a pollutant?" an audience member asked.  Callicrate responded affirmatively and explained that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently initiated a formal enforcement action against his Kansas feedlot for, among other things, failure to store his hay in a pollution containment zone. "Now that EPA has declared hay a pollutant, every farmer and rancher that stores hay, or that leaves a broken hay bale in the field is potentially violating EPA rules and subject to an EPA enforcement action," Callicrate said. "How far are we going to let this agency go before we stand up and do something about it?"

Callicrate is permitted to handle 12,000 cattle at a time in his feedlot, which is considered a small to mid-sized feedlot in an industry now dominated by mega-feedlots such as those owned by the world's largest beef packer - JBS-Brazil - with a one-time capacity of over 900,000 cattle; or the other mega-feedlot that also feeds hundreds of thousands of cattle at a time and is owned by the nation's second-largest beef packer - Cargill; or the other handful of mega feedlots with capacities of hundreds of thousands of cattle such as those owned by Cactus Feeders, Inc. and Friona Industries...  (continued)

Texas: Changes to Texas Cattle Trichomoniasis Regulations

TAHCommissionTexas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) recently adopted changes to its cattle Trichomoniasis (Trich) rules. Trich is a venereal disease of cattle caused by protozoa that can cause abortions and infertility, subsequently causing economic losses for the producer. The cattle program is managed primarily through required testing of breeding bulls for the disease prior to change of ownership or entry into a herd. Interested producers, veterinarians and stakeholders provided suggestions to the TAHC over the previous year to help improve the Trich program. A TAHC Trich working group met in May to review the submitted suggestions and provided recommendations for the TAHC to consider. The working group suggestions that were accepted and recently passed by the TAHC went into effect on August 14. (continued) CLICK HERE to read the FULL NEWS RELEASE

Midwest Affiliate Offers more than Buckles!

Submitted by Steve Paloncy

MTLA more than bucklesThe Midwest Texas Longhorn Association held its 2nd Annual Qualifying Show on July 30th in Veedersburg, Indiana.

Stacy Workman of Gettysburg, PA judged the show and went way beyond merely selecting the winners. The public and even longtime longhorn breeders said they learned something from her wealth of knowledge.

Each year, members of the Midwest Texas Longhorn Association contribute their time, talents and knowledge of longhorn cattle to make this a safe, fun and educational weekend for everyone. "It's truly a cooperative effort" said Steve Paloncy, Perrysville, IN the show chairman for the event, "everyone in our organization along with their families worked very hard to make it successful and fun weekend".

This year's event started off with opening ceremonies which included the presentation of the flag by Gail Beach riding her steer Oliver. A special moment of silence was observed in memory of Beth Tomey. For many years Beth had organized events for both the Indiana and Ohio affiliates and helped many of our young members develop the skills of showmanship and love of longhorn cattle. We all miss her greatly...(continued)

USDA Spurns U.S. Cattle Industry

fire brand

In direct defiance of fundamental recommendations to preserve branding as a means of official animal identification and to not include cattle less than 18 months of age in any national animal identification system made by R-CALF USA and several other U.S. livestock groups, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today released an early version of its proposed rule to implement a national animal identification system titled "Traceability for Livestock Moving Interstate"

The proposed rule would remove the hot-iron brand from among the list of official identification devices that cattle producers could choose to comply with the new federal mandate. It also encompasses cattle less than 18 months of age that would be triggered at USDA's discretion one-year after USDA determines that older-aged cattle are substantially identified.

"The proposed rule, expected to be published in tomorrow's Federal Register, not only spurns the U.S. livestock industries key recommendations regarding the hot-iron brand and younger cattle, but also, it snubs the critical recommendation by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's own Advisory Committee on Animal Health, which urged the Secretary to provide at least a 120-day public comment period for the proposed rule. Instead, Vilsack is only providing a 90-day public comment period," said R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard...(continued)

How are we doing?

One of the things that is so endearing about the Longhorn breed is their legendary ability to not only endure tough and changing times, but to look good while doing it!  Throughout the centuries, they have had to squeeze out every ounce of survival instinct to keep going.  Yet, to look at them today, you would never know it.  They are more beautiful than ever, their simply magestic design and variety of color is truly beautiful to behold.

This year's launch of the E-Drover marks an era of change in our ability to communicate timely information to ITLA members and affiliates, and keep them informed of changes that affect both the individual producer and the industry at large.  Advertisers have also been able to stretch their dollars further while increasing their reach through our economic ads and e-blasts.

What are your thoughts?  How are we doing with the e-Drover?  Take a minute to let us know what we are doing right, and what things could continue to be improved.
