 Around the Campfire  Roger Hutton

...with Roger Hutton, ITLA President

I want to share my growing excitement about the 2011 ITLA Convention and Championship Show to be held in Glen Rose, Texas on October 20 thru 22, 2011.

Corena Henderson is Chair of the Convention Committee, Larry Lonero is Chair and Glen West is Vice Chair of the Championship Show.  Joe Assad is Chair of our Marketing Committee which will play an important role in promoting the events.  I want to thank each of the committee chairs for their volunteering to serve you the members of ITLA in this way.  They are already working hard, posing new ideas and exhibiting great energy in the planning of ITLA's premier event of the year.  If anyone would like to be part of these three committees and work on this great event, please contact Trish David or the Committee Chairs directly.  They have a lot to do and will welcome your help.

We have started our planning early.  For the past two months, I have brought the Chairs of the Convention, Championship Show and Marketing Committees, as well as Trish David our Office Manager, together on conference calls with the Executive Committee of the Board.  Together, we are acting as the Planning Committee and will continue in this role through the close of the Convention and Championship Show.  These early planning efforts are critical to providing you a wonderful experience at the Convention and Championship Show.

Larry and Glenn are doing some new things with the shows themselves that will generate more excitement and efficiency so that all of our show participants will have an outstanding experience.  Corena is creating new energy around the convention activities that will attract more people and entertain those who are not involved in the show activities.

We are creating new and valuable sponsorship packages that will give all of you the opportunity to financially support the Convention and Championship Show.  The down economy and lack of sponsorship have caused the level of our event to decline in recent years.  We are enthused about presenting an event that will be exciting and memorable for you and it takes sponsorships in order to be able to afford to do this.  In the next couple of weeks we will launch the promotion plan that Joe Assad and his Marketing Committee have developed and we will begin our fund raising activities to ensure that we can produce a first class event and help you create those ITLA memories.

By popular demand we are including a Judging Clinic in this year's Convention.  Lizz Huntzberry, Bill Henderson and Darol Dickinson have all volunteered to present this outstanding clinic and then judge the shows over the following two days to further educate the participants.  Most of the folks who want to attend the Judging Clinic will never judge a show, but they want to experience the training that will better equip them to judge the value of cattle they already own and cattle they will buy in the future.

We are presenting a special promotional opportunity for the youth who want to attend the clinic.  You can learn more about this in an article later in this issue.

Of course, like any convention we will hold our business meetings.  The outgoing Board will hold its final meeting of the year prior to the Annual Membership Meeting and then, following the annual meeting, the new Board will hold its organizational meeting.  All of these meetings are open to members to observe.  We welcome your attendance.

So mark your calendars and begin making plans now to attend our 2011 ITLA Convention and Championship Show.  It will be the most exciting and well attended in the past decade and you don't want to miss it.

This is proving to be a challenging summer all across our great country.  People are being affected by storms, fires, drought and floods.  All of these challenges can be discouraging at best and for those directly affected they can be devastating.  I pray that all of you will continue to be optimistic about our country and our future and that those directly affected by these events will be blessed with recovery.

Thank you for your continuing support of the ITLA.

Roger Hutton

Joel & Shirley Lemley's Ranch Damaged by Fire

Here are some pictures from Joel and Shirley Lemley, which show the devastation from the fire on their ranch.  Zech Dameron III said "...the Cattle seem to have survived and Barracade is OK.  House and barns saved.  (Lemley's have) lost 2-3 miles of fence and the pastures are burned.   These are not insured.  We need to help Joel and Shirley.  Please send whatever you can to the Texas Longhorn Heritage Foundation where we are getting donations to send to the Lemleys.  We raised 3,000 at the Oregon Longhorn sale on Saturday, last.   All this is tax deductable with the Heritage Foundation involved.  They charge nothing for doing this for the Lemleys.  We need to help a fellow Longhorn breeder as soon as we can."   Zech

TAHC to Discontinue Brucellosis Testing at Markets TAHCommission

AUSTIN - The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has announced that effective August 1, 2011, government subsidized Brucellosis testing at all Texas livestock markets will be discontinued, due to a lack of funding available to pay for future testing. The TAHC will no longer enforce the requirement that all test eligible (adult) cattle be Brucellosis tested for a change of ownership within Texas.

After diligently working to eradicate Brucellosis "Bangs" from cattle for almost 50 years, on February 1, 2008, the USDA declared Texas Brucellosis free. "The discontinuation of brucellosis testing will not affect Texas' Brucellosis-free state status," Dr. Dee Ellis, State Veterinarian, said. "We remind Texas producers, marketers and veterinarians however, that maintaining a Brucellosis-free Texas requires constant awareness and vigilance. Although the TAHC will no longer enforce the requirement for Brucellosis testing of adult cattle, cattle producers are encouraged to discuss the issue with their veterinary practitioner prior to purchasing replacement cattle," Ellis said.

Brucellosis is a bacterial disease of cattle that can cause abortions, weak calves and low milk production. Humans can also catch brucellosis (undulant fever) most commonly by consuming unpasteurized milk products or handling contaminated birthing material when assisting with difficult calving situations in infected cows.

For questions or concerns regarding the termination of Brucellosis testing at livestock markets, please contact your local region office.

Windmill Country: Branding

Guest Editor's note:  Not only is the hot iron brand the main reason young wanna-be cattle rustlers refrain from the business, it is the rule for many registered cattle breed associations for a hot iron ID number.  Cattle must have a permanent number for official registration, and it can't be a little ear pen that falls out in the brush country.

Very few large ranches use anything else for ID other than the historic brand.  It sounds, from some media gibberish, that law-makers think cattlemen don't number or ID their cattle.  Fact is -- ranchers number and know their cattle just like Wall Street bankers count their money -- to the penny.

WINDMILL COUNTRY: Ranchers fear lack of support for branding

By Jerry Lackey San Angelo Standard Times/Scripps Texas Newspapers

Jerry Lackey

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Since a new framework for animal disease traceability was introduced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture last year, cattle raisers have been up in arms for fear that the centuries-old hot-iron branding methods may be on the way out.

Instead, the USDA wants every cow to have a unique numerical ID, electronically embedded into an expensive RFID ear tag, to make it easier to track animals from the ranch to feedlots and the slaughterhouse.

Even as the USDA says it never set out to undermine the traditional brand, cattlemen feel that when the government steps in it will make things more complex. They also fear the withdrawal of federal support for branding might embolden animal-rights activists who call the practice barbaric.

The new rules set to replace the National Animal Identification System were strongly opposed by numerous livestock industries and associations, including Fort Worth-based Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.

Although Western movies showing cowboys branding cattle with a hot iron have created the image that the practice started in the Old West, documented history gives verification the practice goes back thousands of years to the days of the ancient Greeks, Arabians, Romans and Egyptians.

USED WITH APPRECIATION TO LEE PITTS...

Cowboy Makeover

By Lee Pitts

Lee PittsThe American rancher had to be forced into the chair at the beauty salon with a wild rag stuffed in his mouth and a pair of hobbles on his ankles so he couldn't run away, but the career bureaucrats and professional meeting-goers were finally successful in completing the makeover. It was expensive and they had to be real sneaky about it, but those performing the makeover have finally managed to change two of the most iconic figures in our nation's colorful history, the cowboy and the cattleman, into "stakeholders" and "producers."

There's just one BIG problem with this makeover: the American consumer doesn't want to buy her beef from a "stakeholder," or even a "producer." No, according to market researcher Mary Love Quinlan, they want their beef from a "rancher," or even better yet, from a "farmer."

Ms. Quinlan found that women make up to 93% of food purchases and they don't like words such as "feed additive" on the package. They hate hormones and the title "cattle feeder" turns them off. In fact, they don't like industrialized agriculture very much at all. So why is the NCBA trying to change today's rancher into exactly that kind of "stakeholder" that the consumer doesn't want to do business with?

He was a partner in the purchase of the foundation bull Bold Ruler and managed him with the Dale Fosdick herd in Michigan.

Bill also served several years on the ITLA board of directors, and he will be missed.

"Focus on what is good and don't let the challenges get you down.." Larry Lonero, President

Dear Fellow Longhorn Breeders:

I just wanted to touch base with you and keep you updated on the happenings of the Houston Area Texas Longhorn Association.

State of the Industry

Down here in Central Texas we are in the midst of a drought that experts say is of historic proportions. It is hot. It is dry. And, yes, we are putting some hay out for our cattle. There's plenty to be challenged by but I prefer to look at some of the positives. In times like this that I am thankful I raise Texas Longhorns and Longhorn influenced crossbred cattle. Our cattle are performing admirably in this drought...
