 Paint Legislation Update
The proposed Massachusetts Paint Stewardship Bill (S.2109) did not pass out of the House Ways and Means Committee by the July 31 deadline. However, between now and the end of the year, the bill can still advance if it garners unanimous support in both branches. Learn more about the bill and find resources at the Product Stewardship Institute website.
ABOUT S.2109 - Paint Stewardship Bill S.2109 would hold paint manufacturers responsible for collecting and managing over 1.6 million gallons of leftover paint across the state, saving Massachusetts municipalities up to $12 million each year by providing paint collection, transportation, and recycling services to Massachusetts residents and businesses. The program would establish new convenient locations for residents to drop off their paint, increase paint reuse and recycling, and create recycling-sector jobs. The legislation is actively supported by the American Coatings Association, which is the only industry in the U.S. that has taken full responsibility for managing their product after consumer use.

Local Schools - Consider Joining the Green Team
THE GREEN TEAM is an interactive educational program that empowers students and teachers to help the environment through waste reduction, recycling, composting, energy conservation and pollution prevention. Participating classes receive certificates of recognition and are eligible to win awards.
Any adult involved in a school can register (not just teachers, but also administrators, staff, or PTA members). Registration is now open for the 2016-2017 school year.
Both new and returning Green Team members are eligible to request free Recycling/Composting Equipment and Idling Reduction materials for their schools. If your school wants to start or expand their recycling program, Green Team can also provide assistance in how to make your program successful. Green Team teachers receive a Green Team Kit full of useful resources and are eligible to win prizes recognizing their students' achievements. Resource include:
- Food Waste Diversion Guide for Schools: How-to guide with tips for every step of the way, from pulling together a team to start the program and evaluating the current system, to implementing and promoting the program.
- Free equipment: Schools that register for The Green Team can request free recycling equipment. This includes outdoor compost bins that schools can use to compost a small amount of food waste on site, and voucher to order composting worms for indoor composting bins.
