MassDEP Grant Reminders

There are two annual reports that are required in order to stay in compliance with the conditions of the SMRP Grant Agreements.  Both are accessed and submitted using your municipality's ReTRAC Account.  The existing account for your municipality must be used.  Please contact me if you do not know who the ReTRAC account holder is for your city/town.

1) 2015 Solid Waste and Recycling Survey
The Calendar Year 2015 Recycling and Solid Waste survey is available on ReTRAC as of January 4, 2016 and due by February 15th.  If you have received a SMRP grant in the last 2 years, you are required to submit this report.  If you intend to apply for another SMRP grant in April 2016, this report is required.  All others are encouraged to submit.

2) 2015 Recycling Dividends Program (RDP) Annual Report
The Calendar Year 2015 Recycling Dividends Program (RDP) Annual Report is available on ReTRAC as of January 4, 2016 and due by February 15th.  If you were awarded funds under this program, this report is required. Also, it is recommended that you have a good tracking system for funds received and expended through the RDP grant program.  A sample RDP Funds Ledger is attached here for your use.

MassDEP is also offering a brief webinar on January 28th to guide municipalities on completing this report. See details under "Upcoming Events."

Tina Klein at MassDEP is the point person for any questions about the SMRP required reports.  She can be reached at (617) 292-5704 or  tina.klein@state.ma.us.
Statewide Trash Map: How Does Your Town Compare?

Using data submitted by Massachusetts' municipalities, this map shows the average "pounds per household" for each city/town in the state in 2014. The greenest communities are the ones that produce the least amount of trash per household.  Not surprisingly, communities with Pay-As-You-Throw tend to produce less trash on average.
Covanta SEMASS Tour?

Please let me know if you are interested in taking a tour of the Covanta SEMASS waste-to-energy facility in Rochester, MA.  It's been a few years since our last organized tour and I know there are some new transfer station managers and recycling committee members on the Cape.

If there is enough interest, I'll try to schedule a tour sometime in the next month or two.  Email me at dquinn@barnstablecounty.org
