What?
The market for recyclable materials is notoriously volatile and, right now, the market is in the midst of a significant downturn. But what does this mean for our local recycling programs? When will the market rebound? And how should municipalities respond to these recent developments?
We will also learn how the very makeup of our waste stream is changing. Traditional packaging like paper and glass are declining in use, while newer materials like aluminum foil closures, plastic pouches, plastic film, and other difficult-to-recycle packaging are becoming more popular. We will discuss how these changes are having an impact on recycling processors and can be confusing to residents trying to recycle.
Expert Speakers:
- Mike Durfor - Executive Director of the Northeast Resource Recovery Association
- Jim Nocella - Public Sector Manager at Waste Management, Inc.
- Additional speakers may be added (stay tuned)
Following the presentations, there will be a facilitated discussion on the challenges that Cape Cod communities face related to waste reduction, recycling, and composting. Please come to the meeting with some ideas about the top challenges that your town faces. We hope this will lead to some ideas for future regional collaboration between towns and recycling committees.
