Barnstable County's first ever Regional Hard Drive Disposal event was held on June 16th. The event provided an opportunity for Cape Cod towns to dispose of old municipal hard drives in a secure, effective, environmentally responsible and affordable manner.
Barnstable County IT selected an e-stewards certified vendor, Metech, for the collection to ensure that the hard drives are disposed of properly. A total of 808 hard drives were securely collected, the data was destroyed and the components were recycled.

When selecting a vendor for any type of electronic waste, please remember to ask if the vendor is e-stewards or R2 certified. There are some key differences between the two certifications, but both contain measures to deal with environmental, safety, health, and security aspects of e-waste recycling.
Municipalities can also use the state contract FAC82 (formerly FAC53) - it was finalized this past April and includes an e-waste category. All vendors in the state contract are e-steward or R2 certified (or both).
