Focusing on Reuse / Swap Shops
Swap shops are a valuable resource to our communities because they provides residents with an opportunity to reuse unwanted items that may otherwise be thrown into the trash. Last month, in an effort to encourage sharing of ideas and best practices between towns, the Community Development Partnership and Cape Cod Cooperative Extension sponsored a tour of the Harwich Treasure Chest and Chatham Swap Shop for local officials and recycling committee members

It's never too late to do the right thing....
At a recent Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event, two residents brought some old containers of DDT, a toxic insecticide that has been banned in the U.S. since 1972! It just goes to show that hazardous materials can hang around for a long time, and it's never too late to bring it to a HHW collection where it can be disposed of safely (and keep it out of our drinking water).
Please consider cleaning out your basement or garage of these hazardous items and disposing of them properly at a upcoming HHW collection (click here for a list of upcoming collections)

Online Textiles Resources
MassDEP has created a new webpage with resources on textile recycling, including case studies, recycling data, information on how and where to recycle textiles, and other helpful advice for communities.
http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/massdep/recycle/reduce/textile-recycling.html
Massachusetts residents and businesses dispose approximately 230,000 tons of textiles annually. About 95 percent of this material could be reused or recycled instead of thrown away. Learn what the state is doing and what you can do to keep clothing, footwear, bedding, curtains - even stuffed animals - out of landfills and incinerators, and to extend their useful lives by putting them in the hands of new owners or recycling their fibers into other products.
