Talking Trash in Chatham

Last Thursday evening, Chatham residents gathered to learn more about solid waste and recycling options for their community. The Town's Solid Waste Advisory Task Force (SWAT) recently completed its comprehensive report and presented its recommendations to the Board of Selectmen (click here for a PDF of the report).

The forum was a chance for residents hear about the experiences of other towns to help them better understand their options. Sandwich's DPW Director, Paul Tilton, and former Needham Selectmen, Jack Cogswell, discussed their towns' Pay-As-You-Throw programs and Nantucket's DPW Director, Kara Buzanoski, talked about recycling enforcement and their in-vessel composting system.

It was an interesting discussion with great questions from the audience. Click on the video above to see for yourself.

The survey is required to be eligible for DEP grants and the data collected provides useful public information about state-wide trends and the effectiveness of municipal recycling programs.

Textile Recycling Fundraiser

On April 20th, Mashpee Middle School students hosted a textile recycling fundraiser to support their 8th grade trip to Washington D.C. The event was sponsored by Bay State Textiles, who provided a collection trailer and paid the school $100 for each ton of textiles that was donated.

This is what 3.5 tons of textiles looks like!

In all, 7,150 lbs. of used textiles were collected and $457.50 was raised for the trip, including a bonus donation from Bay State Textiles.

Beyond the Cape, textile recycling has been a hot topic all across the country.  New York City just launched a textile recycling campaign and is off to a good start (read about it here) and USA Today released an article and video on the growing demand for curbside textile recycling (see the video here).

Where do recycled textiles end up? Here's a good overview from SMART.
Operation Green Fence is Deeply Affecting Export Markets

"China no longer wants to receive garbage from other countries. As a result, enhanced import inspections by Chinese customs officials have led to severe recycling market confusion worldwide, especially for shippers of recovered paper and plastics."
