Russell's Letter

Hello Everyone,

I want to let everyone know I am really enjoying being back on the Cape, I had to go to New Hampshire this past weekend, there was still snow on the ground, don't miss that one bit. I want to thank you all for bearing with me this first year as I adjust and you adjust to the change. I have really enjoyed meeting and getting to know all of you.

I have had lots of requests for Master Gardener collaboration on a number of projects. Instead of listing all the projects if you are looking for something new as a volunteer activity please contact me. Possibilities are numerous for all parts of the Cape.

There were a lot of Master Gardener events in the end of March and Early April; Continuing Education, General Meeting, Rotary Home Show, Trainee Luncheon and Workshop. I want to thank all those that helped coordinate these events and all those that attended.

The next big thing is the Plant Sale, Jim and the Plant Sale Committee have been working tirelessly to perfect the event. Please take the time to review the information below about the Plant Sale.

The demo garden has started up, we are meeting on Wednesday's at around 8am, and all are welcome.

Thanks,

Russ

President's Letter

Fellow Gardeners,

Welcome aboard, new trainees, to our greater family.  We look forward to the excitement you bring!

It is just the beginning.

Appreciation: Thanks to Lynne Dowdall and the Continuing Education Committee for another day of learning. We also thank the speakers-Tovah Martin, Dan Jaffe, and Russ Norton. Cochato Nursery brought plants from their nursery-some just peaking through the soil. It was a very cold day to be standing outside finding that just so plant for our gardens but even colder for Chuck and Sue. Thanks to all who supported our raffle by donating items and buying tickets. On Friday, Tovah taught the tricks to planting the perfect terrarium. At the Friday workshop, I realized I had become my mother-there will be no glass jar in my house that will remain unplanted!

Thanks to Jan Cincotta for inviting the Trainees and fellow Master Gardeners to her home for the Trainee Potluck Luncheon. Food was great and company even better. Thanks to all trainees for your dedication to your studies and class time and thanks for your upcoming duties in the Horticultural Clinic

On April 10th at 10:00 a.m. we had our first meeting in support of the Speakers Bureau at the Mashpee Public Library. This first meeting was a planning session to meet the expectations of improving camera, editing, Powerpoint and lecturing skills. If you are interested in learning or have skills to teach, please join us. Our first assignment: Russ has requested the Demo Garden be photographed. Imagine our very own Victory Garden.

The room is reserved for the next six months on the second Wednesday on the month. Have questions? Contact Mary Anne Buss at 508.539.7009 or mabuss3@verison.net.

Happy Spring Gardening

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE ANNUAL
PLANT SALE MAY 18, 2013

Dates: May 17th set up and May 18th sale

Location: Barnstable County Fairgrounds, Route 151, Falmouth, Ma.

The plant sale is our primary revenue generating activity. The funds are used to support our outreach programs. The success of the MG Plant Sale depends on the generosity of all our members and could not happen without the contributions of time, perennials, vegetables, herbs, ground covers, trees, shrubs and house plants. The public depends on us for our high quality plants. To ensure that the quality of the plant material is the best that we can offer, here are a few thoughts to consider:

At least 2 to 3 weeks BEFORE the plant sale is the perfect time to dig up and divide perennials that you are planning to donate to the sale. Be sure to choose a pot that is in proportion to the size of the plant. Keep your plants well watered and shaded from the sun and wind. By May 18th, those plants should be looking fabulous.

A little grooming goes along way .... Please remove weeds and clean off unattractive foliage. We will set aside a plant that is wilting, invasive or diseased looking.

Please take care to identify your plants correctly. For uniformity and customer ease, we encourage you to label your plants with a thin sharpie marker on white plastic plant labels or venetian blind slats that we can provide if you need them. Here's how:

One side: common name, cultivar color ex: coneflower, "Magnus", purple
Other side: mature height, sun/shade ex: 2' tall, full sun

On Friday, May 17, we will be setting up and organizing the sale from 9 AM until 2PM. We need help
arranging tables and signs and arranging plants as they are delivered. We will also be pricing and
identifying plants and arranging them on display tables. On Saturday, we'll be starting at 7:30AM to get ready for 10 AM when the doors fly open and the crowds descend. Every Master Gardener is
encouraged and welcomed to help with the set up and sale. Please come and join the fun.

Any questions, please contact Jim Reynolds at madelynrey@comcast.net, 508-681-9172 or Joy Hastings at Qceres@aol.com, 508-888-6371.

Each year, we try to have some special plants that might appeal specifically to the Master Gardeners.  This year, with the help and expertise of Dick White, we are going to have a selection of rhododendrons.  Many of these plants are new cultivars. They are not available to the public and would be welcome additions for collectors and enthusiasts. With luck, they will be in bloom for the plant SALE so that you will be able to see the color and blossom. And stay tuned for next month's newsletter. There are other surprises.
