Electronic Waste & e-Stewards
Computers, cell phones, TVs and other e-waste can contain hazardous materials and sensitive personal information. Most of us want to do the right thing and recycle this material, but how to we really know that our electronics are being recycled responsibly? To address this very question, several industry leading e-waste recycling vendors met with local officials at the MassRecycle Southeast Municipal Recycling Council (MRC) meeting in Wrentham, earlier this month. We discussed two e-waste certification programs, e-Stewards run by the Basel Action Network and R2 Solutions. There are some key differences between the two certifications, but both contain measures to deal with environmental, safety, health, and security aspects of e-waste recycling.

The biggest take-home from our discussion is that you should not simply assume that all electronics recycling vendors are doing the right thing. Here are a few important questions to ask when choosing a vendor.
